Penguins vs Thrashers Open Thread 1/30/08

Pittsburgh Penguins (28-18-4) vs Atlanta Thrashers (23-25-4)
In Atlanta at 7:00pm
Watch on Center Ice/FSN or listen live at WXDX.com

NOTES
First off, check out Dunman's newest installment of Tales of the Tape.  If you haven't see this yet, then you haven't lived.

Last time these two met the Thrash beat the Pens 3-2 in a shootout victory
The loss stifled the Pens' win streak
Mark Recchi scored the shootout, game-winning goal
Sidney Crosby had the only two Pens regulation goals
A win tonight puts the Pens in first place over the Flyers (currently one point away)
Before the All-Star break the Thrashers were losers of four-straight
Colby still sick with flu
Sabourin may get the start, although all signs point to Conklin
Fleury = still injured

Let the banter commence...

Looking

forward to the game......i hate games in back 2 back nights as I almost always assume that the team will lose the second game due to fatigue. That way of thinking has been proven to be stupid because the Pens have won 2 games in 2 nights before.  The best this year was the CGY/VAN games..... and you throw in the 3rd period comeback show by Sid against EDM (sob sob, i miss him)and we took 3 in 4 nights.

Time to start a win streak boys.....make us Pens fans proud and keep old man Rex in check this time.

big game

A win tonight would be huge.  There'd also be a nice break between tonight and the Canes on Saturday, so it gives us time to sit back and see what the Flyers/Devils can do.

Let's hope the Thrash haven't rebounded after the break.  Continuing that losing streak would be a nice gesture.

This isn't right

The NHL network is airing "Pittsburgh Penguins - The Stanley Cup Years" at 8:00.  Come on, at least put it on at 10.

Holik
Just made Conklin look like a fool

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 7:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah....

stupid. Notice that check he threw on some Thrasher behind the goal? Whats going on? Stay in the net!

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 7:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That's

probably the single thing I always say every game.  STAY IN THE (expletive of your choice) NET!  I did it with Fleury too.  He was getting a little too comfortable venturing out.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 7:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

too bad

nice effort on the PK by Malkin but it was spoiled by Kovalchuk...i mean the gay Keanu Reeves.  This time he pointed to the Pens bench after he scored....what a goof.  I hope he gets fuckin laid out.  I hate that prick......sorry......i gots issues with him since his famous "point" at Sid in the box.

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 7:41 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I

totally agree with you. I hate Kovulchuk too! Laraque has his ass at some point in this game.  Ruutu looks like he may want to throw down tonight too. LETS GO PENS!

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 7:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

man

who can forget the pointing incident?  I've wanted him laid out since then too.

First Itermission Entertainment

Penskorn suggested this during the Pens/Flyers game.  Here's the video of Lemieux scoring five goals in five different ways.

There's your wish PensKorn

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

there

better not be a penalty!

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 8:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Since when

is "kneeing" a penalty.  There's no way that was a penalty.

F-that.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it

didn't even look like he knee'd him. whatever. lets cuts the lead in half.

WHAAAAAAAAT

the fuck?

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 8:10 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

ridiculous

So Ruutu gets the kick, McCarthy stays in?  No one announcing even knows what's going on

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

figures

i stepped out for a smoke and missed all the action.  I came in when Roots was hiding on the bench until they gave him the game.  WHAT HAPPENED??
something bad to Kovie i hope???...

Thx for the video post Franky.....truly impressive night for Lemieux there.

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 8:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kovi

went to the lockerroom after allegedly being knee'd by ruutu. garbage call but kovulchuk is hurt. :)

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 8:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ruu

Ruutu went to crash Kovi into the bench, but at the last second he slipped out of the way.  However, Kovi and Ruu went knee to knee and Kovi went down.  Then McCarthy from the Thrash went after Ruu, threw some punches and got kicked.  It really didn't warrant a penalty on Ruutu, let alone a game misconduct.  But the claim was he led with his knee and that's what they're going with.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

why

are we playing like the game is out of reach and taking stupid penalties??

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 8:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Funniest thing is...

Almost all of the penalties so far this game are from the guys we called up within the last two weeks

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

honestly though

I don't think I've ever seen a penalty for kneeing.  Ruutu accumulated 20 minutes of PIM in 1 second of play.  5 for fighting, 5 for kneeing and 10 for game mis.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

wow

I honestly think the outcome is better than the loss of Roots.  Kovie's gone hahahahaha.  He's crying to his gay-lover in the dressing room right now.

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 8:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

why

do i open my mouth???  He's back. Damn

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 8:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

PK

Wel if that worked....

Now repeat after me:

"Good think Crosby is out, who needs him anyway?"

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

??

wtf??  I'm seriously about to lose my fucking mind at this game.

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 8:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

too many

penalties.  If it weren't for Conk this game would be 8-0 by now.

And I also have to say, I'm amazed Staal has a three-game point streak.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

WHOA

Nathan Smith!

Welcome to the Pens.  Now score another one.

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 8:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

did you

by any chance hear the stat in the Flyers game about Orpik?  Last I heard he hasn't scored a goal in 119 games or somethin like that.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i dunno

Looks like a no goal to me.  But I'd love to see one.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Pleeeeease

let it stand

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 8:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

flyers

In the Flyers game last night, Hartnell got the game winner because he stopped and it hit his skate with no kicking motion.  This was, to me, an obvious kick.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

good call though

this...

is what it looks like when Penskorn loses his mind.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

why

is it everytime the Pens have a shot on goal they NEVER get the rebound. They're gonna have to show a little more intensity if they want to win this game.

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 8:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The Pens

have to come back big in the third here.  Down by two goals in the third, and when you add in the fact they played 3 rough periods last night, this is gonna be a hard one.  They can do it though.  As long as Conk stays on to of his game.

2nd Intermission Entertainment

In honor of Ruutu's misconduct.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

hahahaha

My brother still thinks that Ruutu didn't win that fight........stupid Leafs fans

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 8:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Thats

the thing about us hockey fans...i know ive said something similar when I knew I was wrong. Your bro knows Ruutu kicked his ass...he just doesn't want to admit it. And thank you Frank. By far the best fight Ive seen in a while. You can never get sick of this clip.

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 8:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

no prob

The best is when Roberts beat down Eager and Philly fans kept claiming Eager won.  Ridiculous.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Totally

forgot about that one. Also one hell of a fight.

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 8:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd say

70/30 Ruutu.  Tucker got bloodied up pretty good.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 8:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

cmon

Pens.....a repeat performance from the 2 period deficit we had against EDM would be nice.

by penskorn66 on Jan 30, 2008 8:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Alright

now its Laraques turn to light up Kovi. And lets get some goals...FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 8:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Soooooo

close! C'mon Staal! Alright lets get this PPG

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 9:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Leave it to Gonch

He should've just pushed it to Conk and let him dive on it.  THis is kiling me.

Tell

me about it. F'n Gonchar. Looks like those beers i'll be drinking tonight may have tears in them.

Wow

Conk replaced by Sabu. I'd do it too.

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 9:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Orpik

goalless in last 172 games. Looked it up since this game is over.

by kellyfisher on Jan 30, 2008 9:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

bah

He rarely even shoots the puck. Which is why I was amazed to hear he lined up as a winger last night.

By the way - you think Malkin hit the beer early?  He can hardly stay on his skates.

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 9:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He

must have! hahaha. So much for taking first! :( why cant we beat the Thrashers??!!?!?!

Recchi

The curse of Recchi

by FrankD on Jan 30, 2008 9:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What a sad game

The Pens just looked bad overall... that to go with some bad luck and you get a 4-1 loss.

I was pretty pissed with the Ruutu ejection.  Yes he hit his knee, but he was finishing his check... very borderline call at best... then 5 minutes for fighting as well!  Bogus!  The Pens should have in the very least came away with a 2 minute power play.

Then some bad luck... everything seemed to go against the Pens tonight.   I guess that's what happens when you look bad overal...

agreed

That was an absolutely horrid call on Ruutu.  I remember once in Roenick's career he was hit knee-to-knee and I highly, HIGHLY doubt the other guy got a 'kneeing' penalty.  To make matters worse, Roenick had to have surgery on torn cartilage...Kovi was able to come back.

I could see a game misconduct coming from a hack at the knee, but this was as far from that as could be.  And as for the fighting penalty, Ruutu didn't even drop his gloves.  In fact, Mccarthy hit Ruu about 4 or 5 times right in the face and like a disciplined disciple of Therrien he did nothing and tried to draw the penalty.

Just a tough, tough loss...
