Ruutu vs. McCarthy poll
penskorn66 brought up a point about the McCarthy/Ruutu fight from the Thrashers game.
The point he made was that since McCarthy was pummeling Ruutu without any reciprocation, it really didn't count as a fight. I'm not sure - it looks like a massacre of a fight to me, but I thought I'd put it to a vote.
The content expressed in fanposts does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the staff here at Pensburgh.com. FanPosts are opinions expressed by fans of various teams throughout the league but may be more Pittsburgh-centric for obvious reasons.

When you get a chance
Toss up a poll. Just go to edit story and add poll at the bottom. I'll draw some traffic in from other sites with it and we'll see what people say.
Personally, I don't necessarily think Ruutu was in a fight. HOWEVER, if you consider the refs gave them each a fighting call, and if in fact their call means they fought, then Ruutu definitely got his pads handed to him.
..
I think I'm one of many who think that the NHLs officiating is the worst of all the major pro sports. The amount of PIM Roots got last night night on that play was not justified in the least bit. He should have got 2 at the most for what I would have called interference, if anything. I'm not surprised though....the officiating stinks. Many games left a bad taste in my mouth.

I think
one of the hardest things about calling penalties in hockey is that it's not only up to the refs' discretion, but also simply a matter of being seen in the first place. In football, all of the guys line up at the line. A false start or off sides is more than obvious. A roughing the quarterback or pass interference however, is often the controversial call.
With the exception of fighting and blatant high-sticks, the rest is pretty much a bunch of roughing the quarterback penalties. Take Ruu for example. Kovalchuk was the quarterback being sacked by the goon. The refs called in favor of the QB, who crumpled to the ice and had one of his teammates jump over to defend him.
The inconsistency is really what the problem is. Plus, you often get subtle "make it even" penalties. This is where the refs know they loused up a call, but will now balance it out with a trip to the box for the other team.
I think I have to hunt down a ref for further explanations.
