NOTES

Is it wrong to think the Pens will take a loss tonight and split the series before heading back to the U.S.?  Trust me, I'm not ruling out the Pens.  I just feel it would bring a fitting end to an overseas opener.  The Kings and Ducks split it last year in England, so I guess you can't rule it out.  I guess the best finish, besides an obvious win of course, is the Pens salvaging a point in OT.

I believe we'll see Sabourin net for the Pens today.  EDIT: Fleury in.  Kennedy will most definitely get the start over Sykora.  I'd like to see Goligoski in place of Sydor on the blue line, as I feel his shot would bring a little more to the PP.  Other than that, we'll wait till game time and I'll keep my eyes on the roster updates.

Looking like Fleury today. Auld is in net for Ottawa. Sykora still out and Kennedy in.

Staal’s ridiculously long reach is like its own penalty killing unit.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 2:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Totally. If only Gill were a bit faster on skates the two would combine for 3 1/2 players on a 4-man PK

haha oh Ruutu. How can you even be mad at him?

I think its probably pretty easy if you’re on the opposing team. He’s pretty entertaining to watch though.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was a really stupid penalty for Schubert to take.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 3:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, I thank him for that stupid penalty. Now let’s have the PP click

By the way

Did you read Open Ice? I thought it was a really good book.

I’m not finished it yet – I have a really heavy reading list this semester – but I’m enjoying it so far, I’m about half way done. I was reading the essay about the Rideau the other day on the bus, which was kind of weird. He was talking about the Weston and the Chateau Laurier, and when I looked up I was staring right at them.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow that’s pretty surreal, haha. Yeah when I was up around Ottawa back in December I make it a point to make sure i came back around Feb/March to skate it. After reading that essay I wanted to do it even more.

There’s a really good essay later on about this hockey player who served in WWII – really just an interesting story. Don’t want to give the focus of the essay away.

I guess it wasn’t that unusual because they’re only like one stop from campus and I pass them everyday on the bus – it was just odd to be reading about them at that exact time. I’m a terrible skater – but I did bring my skates to Ottawa this year – and I live so close to the canal – it would be a shame not to go.

I also really liked the first essay. I’m not feeling overly articulate today – but the way he described “frenchness” and the importance of Maurice Richard in Quebec was really interesting, and I think very true.

Living ‘south of the border’ I can’t really grasp how someone can stand as that sort of cultural icon. As far as the U.S. is concerned, I guess the closest example would be someone in baseball. Who? I don’t know. Maybe Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig during the 20s, perhaps more recently Mark McGwire in the 90s. But Jack definitely grasped it and reproduced it well in that essay.

You know – the power play really looks like crap lately.

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 3:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah. That was pretty bad.

There’s been a lot of special teams play in these two games.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Therrien is really having a good time with the lines tonight. I think he’s just picking names out of a hat for every line change.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 4:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree – it’s nice to mix it up, but I still think these guys haven’t been playing together long enough to just swap in and out.

Ugh – Heatley.

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Random fact – Last year I saw Dan Snyder’s(who was killed in that car accident with Heatley) father speak about both Snyder and Heatley. It was really interesting – definitely made me respect Heatley from the way he described him.

Sometimes I think the media babies Crosby more than Pens fans do.

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. Watch some Canadian coverage – it can be brutal.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So what do you think about all of this talk of a conference in Europe? (There’s a segment on CBC right now where they said they’re hearing 2011 as a goal.)

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 4:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t get it. I mean, I can understand if the NHL tried to form another league overseas, but a Conference in Europe? Is anyone considering the toll on players flying back and forth, the general disconnect associated with playing overseas. I don’t know, I don’t like it.

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I don’t get that either. I think an AHL-Europe would make more sense. More like a minor league of the NHL.

Unless they did a NHL Europe and then had an Uber championship. Where the Stanley Cup champs played the NHL Europe champs, and that’d be the only contact between the leagues.

by JDMaker1 on Oct 5, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, that would be pretty sweet. Baseball should do the same so they can actually have meaning to the term World Series. Next to Toronto, there’s no team outside the continental U.S.

That’s essentially what the WBC is supposed to be.

But I think it would be better if the best teams from each leagues played each other in a round robin tournament. As opposed to international all-star teams.

by JDMaker1 on Oct 5, 2008 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What have I missed??

I just got back in town and turned the game on. Just in time for the third.

How’d Ottawa score?

by JDMaker1 on Oct 5, 2008 4:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Scoreless first. Lots of line changes. Crosby played a lot of minutes. The PP was not looking good. The goal was by Heatley.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully you’ll bring a little luck with ya JD. They’re looking kinda bland out there.

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well I brought a power play. Maybe they’ll be able to finish this time.

by JDMaker1 on Oct 5, 2008 4:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Pens are 0-for-5, looking more like 0-for-6 at this point.

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At least Ottawa is having similar struggles. 1-for-8

check that – Pens are 0-for8 on the PP.

This has been a weird hockey game from what I’ve seen already.

by JDMaker1 on Oct 5, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It has. Fast paced but constant end-to-end crap.

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe we can get a 1-9 power-play? Is that too much to ask?

not at all.

CBC confused me. Is it an Ottawa penalty – or a Pitt. Penalty?

Pitt is going on the PP

Ottawa holding call i believe. Although, Vs. coverage is lacking in Virginia.

Mario’s 43 today? Who knew.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 4:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Gogo has got to rip a shot there.

by JDMaker1 on Oct 5, 2008 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Goligoski should’ve shot that. He had a clear look at the net. Shoot the friggin puck

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And then there is Crosby. Mad he hasn’t scored, intent on doing it all himself.

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, he looks a little childish right now in my opinion. Like a travel kid in a house league.

well when that kid can’t score anyway.

Anything at this point. As I said in the post, I’m happy with the Pens squeezing out a point in this one. I kinda felt they were going to look blah today.

never mind. It’s our penalty.

Heatley again. Dare I say he ‘crashed’ the net there?

FrankD from Pensburgh.com

by FrankD on Oct 5, 2008 4:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder if MAF couldn’t have gotten more of that and it still goes in?

That thing was a laser. It probably would’ve just put a hole through Fleury’s chest.

CBC says “That might seal it.” Might? He gives us more credit than I do.

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 5:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree. Might is an understatement. 3-0 with 3 minutes is enough insurance to say “definitely will.”

by Dayna on Oct 5, 2008 5:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah seriously. I guess that was done just for Auld’s sake. Even though the puck was in the net when the clock buzzer went off.
