NOTES
Is it wrong to think the Pens will take a loss tonight and split the series before heading back to the U.S.? Trust me, I'm not ruling out the Pens. I just feel it would bring a fitting end to an overseas opener. The Kings and Ducks split it last year in England, so I guess you can't rule it out. I guess the best finish, besides an obvious win of course, is the Pens salvaging a point in OT.
I believe we'll see Sabourin net for the Pens today. EDIT: Fleury in. Kennedy will most definitely get the start over Sykora. I'd like to see Goligoski in place of Sydor on the blue line, as I feel his shot would bring a little more to the PP. Other than that, we'll wait till game time and I'll keep my eyes on the roster updates.

Looking like Fleury today. Auld is in net for Ottawa. Sykora still out and Kennedy in.

Staal’s ridiculously long reach is like its own penalty killing unit.

Totally. If only Gill were a bit faster on skates the two would combine for 3 1/2 players on a 4-man PK

I think its probably pretty easy if you’re on the opposing team. He’s pretty entertaining to watch though.

I’m not finished it yet – I have a really heavy reading list this semester – but I’m enjoying it so far, I’m about half way done. I was reading the essay about the Rideau the other day on the bus, which was kind of weird. He was talking about the Weston and the Chateau Laurier, and when I looked up I was staring right at them.

Wow that’s pretty surreal, haha. Yeah when I was up around Ottawa back in December I make it a point to make sure i came back around Feb/March to skate it. After reading that essay I wanted to do it even more.
There’s a really good essay later on about this hockey player who served in WWII – really just an interesting story. Don’t want to give the focus of the essay away.

I guess it wasn’t that unusual because they’re only like one stop from campus and I pass them everyday on the bus – it was just odd to be reading about them at that exact time. I’m a terrible skater – but I did bring my skates to Ottawa this year – and I live so close to the canal – it would be a shame not to go.
I also really liked the first essay. I’m not feeling overly articulate today – but the way he described “frenchness” and the importance of Maurice Richard in Quebec was really interesting, and I think very true.

Living ‘south of the border’ I can’t really grasp how someone can stand as that sort of cultural icon. As far as the U.S. is concerned, I guess the closest example would be someone in baseball. Who? I don’t know. Maybe Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig during the 20s, perhaps more recently Mark McGwire in the 90s. But Jack definitely grasped it and reproduced it well in that essay.

Random fact – Last year I saw Dan Snyder’s(who was killed in that car accident with Heatley) father speak about both Snyder and Heatley. It was really interesting – definitely made me respect Heatley from the way he described him.

So what do you think about all of this talk of a conference in Europe? (There’s a segment on CBC right now where they said they’re hearing 2011 as a goal.)

I don’t get it. I mean, I can understand if the NHL tried to form another league overseas, but a Conference in Europe? Is anyone considering the toll on players flying back and forth, the general disconnect associated with playing overseas. I don’t know, I don’t like it.

Yeah, I don’t get that either. I think an AHL-Europe would make more sense. More like a minor league of the NHL.
Unless they did a NHL Europe and then had an Uber championship. Where the Stanley Cup champs played the NHL Europe champs, and that’d be the only contact between the leagues.

I agree, that would be pretty sweet. Baseball should do the same so they can actually have meaning to the term World Series. Next to Toronto, there’s no team outside the continental U.S.

That’s essentially what the WBC is supposed to be.
But I think it would be better if the best teams from each leagues played each other in a round robin tournament. As opposed to international all-star teams.
