Pittsburgh Penguins No. 8 in professional sports brands
It's a commendable feat for a team on the brink of bankruptcy nearly two seasons ago. In addition to being number eight overall, it's kinda cool to be the second most popular brand in the NHL. Who's the first? *vomit*

How can either of those two be the top NHL brands when neither comes close to matching the Leafs in revenue. Turnkey knows that they play sports in Canada right?

Hey, I’ll be 100% honest – I’m with ya. When I first saw the article I thought it was just hockey teams, so number eight seemed a fitting place below Toronto, New York Rangers, Montreal, etc. Then I saw it was all sports – then I saw the Red Wings above the Pens and questioned where the others were.
So basically – yeah, I’m kinda with ya. If anything Toronto and Montreal would be at the top, not only for the revenue but also for the general market itself.

You really shouldn’t vomit on the website, Frank. Someone may slip.

This list confuses me. The Spurs are the top basketball brand? Really? (I know next to nothing about professional basketball, but even that is a little odd to me.)
Also re: Toronto and Montreal – I’m thinking this list might be a list of American sports brands. Because if you’re looking world wide then the fact that there’s no soccer representation is a little off. In South America and parts of Europe I’m sure that soccer merchandise and revenue are eclipsing baseball, football, hockey and basketball hands down.

Good point. Didn’t think about the whole soccer thing. There are definitely teams in England worth more than the entire NHL.

And some of those teams may very well have debts larger than some NHL teams. Soccer is the funny old game, after all.
I can’t imagine the Spurs are the top basketball brand over a little team I’d like to call, the Lakers. Anyway, it makes good sense that the Penguins would be far up there what with their incredibly marketable superstar wunderkid, their not as marketable but also a superstar, and the fact that the team is now playing fairly well with said stars.

I love the nebulous world of “brand rankings” and assorted mumbo jumbo — for precisely all the reasoned points you guys raise above.
That said, it is another day to be grateful the Penguins franchise did not move when things looked so dark.

it’s not just value of the team they were looking at….the Leafs probably got nailed huge on the “committment to winning” phase of the ranking…
