Michel Therrien: 'It's Sidney's team' or 'We'll see next game?'
Update: Apparently this quote is under some skewed interpretation right now. If you listen to it at first, it easily sounds like "It's Sidney's team." In fact, even the AP story ran with that. Under further review, Tony from Confluence and the boys over at EmptyNetters have confirmed Therrien said, "We'll see next game."
In effort to alleviate a long load time on the main page, I tossed up a video of Michel Therrien's press conference after the jump. I'll be the first to tell ya - it's not exactly exciting and riveting coverage. However, there are a few statements that raise a question mark. Few? OK. All.
For example: MT starts off this clip by saying, "It was a bad game by everyone involved."
Can't argue that sentiment.
He further reiterates this point seconds later. "It's not about Marc-Andre. Everyone, not one guy, not ten guys, everyone."
But it's really the final comment that gets me. Taken in sarcasm, bitterness or perhaps even as a sign of a shakeup, Therrien states, "It's Sidney's team." He then walks off the stage.
What?
See for yourself in the vid...
Again, I don't quite get what he's trying to do here. In 1:15 seconds Therrien manages to go from blaming the team, to saying it's no one's fault, to finally stapling it as "Sidney's team."
I'm confused.

The reporter girl said something about leadership, maybe do you blame the leadership? It is hard to hear her. Is that his way of saying Sid is doing a crappy job of Captain? Would you say that it is the sole resposibility of the captain of a team to motivate and get the best out of all the players? Or would you say that it is a shared responsibility between captain, coaching staff and maybe even management. Do you think Sid ticked MT off maybe with a disagreement as to what their problem was last night or maybe even on going issues that the team have been working on? How confusing, that is something my Dad would say or do, he would think that a comment like that would be motivating and make him work harder and be a better leader. It would come as a sort of, you think you can do a better job and I know nothing, fine you figure it out and show me how to do my job and I will sit and wait for the ‘I was right’. No matter how you look at it I would not want to be withing 20 feet of MT right now! yikes.

Yeah it’s very hard to hear what he’s answering to. If in fact he’s addressing leadership, I still think his approach to the whole situation was pretty immature. “It’s Sidney’s team” is the last thing I want my coach saying. I think any team would hate to hear a coach say that. You’re the coach for a reason. If you want it to be Sidney’s team then resign and we’ll find another coach who is willing to make it HIS team.
But you know what? Even if it IS his way of saying Sid is doing a crappy job leading the team, how is it just his fault? I mean, MT said himself it’s not just one person’s fault it’s the entire team. He’s just contradicting himself in EVERY…SINGLE…STATEMENT.
I didn’t want to blow it out of proportion right away, but I’m glad to see you are also confused by it. I don’t necessarily want to speculate who pissed who off at any point because I’m sure everyone is on edge after a 7-3 loss. If anything though, his final statement really irks the hell out of me.

Frank, far be it from me to defend HCMT, but he didn’t say “it’s Sidney”s team", he said “we’ll see next game”….. I had to watch it a couple more times, but that’s what he said……

I guess it helps explain why I was so confused by it too. I mean, he’s known to contradict himself from time to time (aren’t we all?), but it just didn’t sound right even from him.

It is amazing how much we can perceive our surroundings by what we hear. I wonder if I had watched pg press conference before reading here, if I would have heard the same thing? Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see.

Guys…this is a non story…I was in that presser…SA from PG asked the question and he said, we will see next game. Whatever it sounds like on the video, it sounded nothing like it’s Sidney’s team in person… Just saying…
Keep up the good work Frank D.

All good Metz. I found it hard to believe when everyone was saying he said, “It’s Sidney’s team” and now I know why – because he never did.
Thanks for stopping by.

Yeah, I heard “We’ll see next game” but of course I didn’t hear it until I already knew what he said. I suppose it could be heard as the other, but to run a story on it with such a mistake is simply sloppy reporting.

I saw it in the AP story and was like, ‘What?’ So I pulled up the vid and I guess since the ever trustworthy AP wrote it (should’ve known) I figured, “Yeah, he did.” One of those examples where if you want to find something you will.

I probably would have heard it that way had I seen the original article as well.
