Mouth finally catches up with Sean Avery

To say that there is no love lost between Dallas forward Sean Avery and anyone who isn't on his team (or maybe even line) isn't very much of an exaggeration.  You may recall during last year's playoffs, Pens fans' hatred was directed so intensely at him that it caused his chest to explode or something.

However, despite his intense douche-baggery on the ice, he's never been penalized for his comments off it...until yesterday when he dropped this gem in the locker room:

"I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight."

-Sean Avery

He was, of course, referring to his ex (and apparently Joe of Mile High Hockey's supposed ex) Elisha Cuthbert, who is now dating fellow douche bag, Calgary Flame Dion Phaneuf - which says a lot about her taste in men.  The Stars defeated the Flames last night, though without Avery, who was suspended indefinitely for his comments and has to go the principal's office for saying mean things.

I find this very funny.

I’m with ya on the funny side of it. I still stand divided on the suspension. I mean, this stuff exists on the ice, but is it Bettman’s job to protect people from it off the ice? Former Pens/Star Matthew Barnaby (and Barry Melrose’s replacement on ESPN) suggested this may be Avery’s end with the Stars.

As long as he stays in the West. I think Bettman’s job is to protect the image of the NHL and interviews like that doesn’t do much.

Of course, what non-NHL fan is aware of the situation? For that matter, what NHL fan is?

the comment is the kind of stuff that gets said in locker rooms all the time, but why go and spill that sort of nonsense to the press? Avery is all about the drama, he should quit hockey and go try out for a soap opera or something….

With his fashion background he’d probably make for a great makeup artist or clothing director

File this in the amusing column: a New York paper says the Rangers should take Avery back.

I would disagree. The less I see of Avery, the better.

My thoughts:
1) Loathe Avery and his kind. They just don’t increase my enjoyment of the game, period.
2) Found the comment funny yet predictable (I remember people predicting something of the sort would happen over the summer when he signed)
3) Still conflicted on the suspension — I think it may be motivated by an accumulation of transgressions, plus some finding the term “sloppy seconds” way more vulgar than I did/do
4) Was just about to post that Newsday link when you did, Frank!
5) Did anyone see the highlights from the Stars-Flames game (which was compelling, despite Avery’s absence — shock!)? Phaneuf was fishing the puck out of the net on at least two of the Stars’ goals.

If Avery was on ice for the Dallas goals you know he would’ve said something to Phaneuf. I’m just disappointed he was suspended before the game because it was bound to be an amusing blood bath. I think Camo, Dion and perhaps even Iginla would’ve dropped mitts with him if and when the Flames too a lead.

The idea put forth on some other sites that the NHL somehow squandered an opportunity to gain much needed publicity for itself is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. Is this kind of crass idiocy the kind of thing the leagues wants to be known for? If ESPN is taking a serious look at an NHL T.V. contract, are they going to do it because an idiot like Avery makes his imbecilic comments to the media, or for the skills of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Ovechkin, and some of the new young studs in the league?
I would agree that the league has some more important things it should be concerned about such as head shots, elbows, and hitting from behind, but the integrity and image of the league and its players is also something they have a right to be concerned about.
I think this is karmic. Avery spears Marc-Andre Fleury in the stomach AFTER a playoff game has concluded, when the Penguins’ players were simply celebrating their awesome victory and nothing happens to him: he’s back playing the next game. Many would say that it is an apples and oranges argument, and they would be right: spearing a goalie AFTER a game is certainly worse than dissing someone’s girlfriend. But as I said, it’s karmic.
I applaud Betteman’s decision—and the comments from Stars ownership, managment, and players—because I have always considered hockey to be the greatest game on earth, and MOST NHL players to be pretty classy people. Sean Avery is not one of them.

I’m going to go on the record as saying karma caught up with Avery a bit last year too when his spleen exploded out of his body. I say that with the shared notion that I hardly wish ill will on people, but if this was a karmic event than it definitely caught up with him. You read a lot about enforcers being good guys off the ice and tough guys on it. But when you get down to agitators like Avery, most of them carry that personality with them 24/7.

I must have missed — or have since forgotten — that Avery’s spleen exploded. I guess that poor spleen realized it had no other way out.

Yeah he was rushed to the hospital during the playoffs last year against the Pens. There were rumors going around that his heart stopped, etc. but his spleen was either enlarged or ruptured, I can’t remember exactly. Dunman had it posted last season.

Yeah, Frank: definitely agree with the spleen call. And yes, how sweet it was that it was against the Pens after the Fleury incident.
Good riddance, Avery. If the Stars are as class an organization as they seem to be, you’ve played your last game there.
