Penguins vs Panthers Open Thread

Pittsburgh Penguins (33-21-5) vs Florida Panthers (27-28-6)
In Pittsburgh at 7:30pm
Watch on FSN/Center Ice or listen online at WXDX.com

NOTES
A win tonight and a Montreal and Ottawa loss creates a tie for first in the Atlantic with NJ and a four way tie with NJ, Montreal and Ottawa for first in the conference.
The only problem is - for Ottawa to win, you have to root for Philly
Go Ottawa - make it 8 losses in a row for the Flyers
Last time the Pens and Panthers met, the Penguins won 3-1.  Vokoun was pulled.
Three days before the 3-1 win, the Pens won 3-0

I may be a few minutes late to tonight's thread.  Fire it up without me.

Just saw Malkin dance through those defenders.  Thing of beauty.

Nice PP chance

Pens are fourth in the league with 21%

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 7:47 PM EST reply actions

why don't they try this for a line

How about Talbot centering Kennedy and Connor James?  Talk about a pygmy unit!

by killer93 on Feb 19, 2008 7:50 PM EST reply actions

Give Therrien enough time

I'm sure in his ADD moments of forming lines, it's only a matter of time before Therrien comes across that combination.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

whitney four giveaways already

time to call him out again.  sheesh.

by killer93 on Feb 19, 2008 8:00 PM EST reply actions

Conklin

saved his ass a few too many times already

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

Well Dunman would be stoked

They just showed the car commercial again

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:04 PM EST reply actions

love

that commercial. I laugh every time.

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 8:15 PM EST up reply actions

ugh

that thing was choreographed to be a goal

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:07 PM EST reply actions

he's killin me

He has so much potential, and yet he's routinely screwing up.  Maybe Therrien has to call him out again.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

wow

slash much?

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 8:10 PM EST reply actions

nice

opportunity at the end of the period.

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 8:15 PM EST reply actions

hah

Fleury is a funny dude with those yellow pads.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:30 PM EST reply actions

what

the hell is he doing???

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

let's go

gotta score with this PP

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:36 PM EST reply actions

that puck

wasn't frozen. Come on!

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:39 PM EST reply actions

nice save!

What the eff was with Gonchar on that play?

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:44 PM EST reply actions

No

Penalty?!?!?!?!?!!??

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 8:48 PM EST reply actions

That should've

been a penalty.  Hands down.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

What is with this PP

Geno just cleared the zone for the Cats

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:52 PM EST reply actions

wake up boys...

lets get one before the end of the period.  And Whitney, go home.  Please.

by killer93 on Feb 19, 2008 8:57 PM EST reply actions

great shift

really gotta get some shots on though.  All they're doing is killing the clock for the Panthers.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 8:58 PM EST reply actions

Hmm

Not that I'm showing sympathy to the Panthers, but that is kinda a BS call on Vokoun.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:01 PM EST reply actions

You know

You can't rag on this PP - it's not the normal one.  Taffe - Kennedy - Staal?  Are you serious?  What is Therrien thinking

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:03 PM EST reply actions

I'm not a coach, but

why o why would you break up Malkin-Malone-Sykora?  They have carried the offense over the last two months

by killer93 on Feb 19, 2008 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Number

4 on the PP, eh? Could have fooled me. Let's see one of those 3rd pd comebacks.

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 9:07 PM EST reply actions

Panthers

aren't giving Malkin anything to work with.  They're doing a great job of cutting him down.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:26 PM EST reply actions

COLBY

Nice change of pace.  I think he just blew a kiss to Sid in the box,

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:31 PM EST reply actions

Leave

Colby alooooone!!! hahaha....lets hope that turned this game around!!

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 9:32 PM EST reply actions

Malkin

tying it up...woot!!!

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 9:33 PM EST reply actions

Conklin

has to stay solid here.  It's gonna come down to his goaltening to save the Pens' chances of coming back

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:36 PM EST reply actions

No

penalty again? hmmmm....

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 9:41 PM EST reply actions

the first

one...not the last.

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

eesh

Orpik almost putting this game out of reach for the cats

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:45 PM EST reply actions

come ooooon Malkin

this diving crap has got to stop.  Take the penalty, you had it - now cut the crap and get to work on the PP

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:46 PM EST reply actions

my thoughts

exactly...we could have used him on the PP.

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

SHOOT LOW

when the goalie doesn't have a stick

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:48 PM EST reply actions

woooo!!!!

Malkin is God.  There.  I said it.

by killer93 on Feb 19, 2008 9:54 PM EST reply actions

Hey Killer

Let's keep making fun of Whitney and Colby...they play better when we do

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 9:54 PM EST reply actions

no kidding!

felt the same way about malone.  stay critical of him and he becomes a better player

by killer93 on Feb 19, 2008 9:56 PM EST reply actions

Nathan Smith is...

doing a great job keeping the bench toasty and closing the door.  see you back in wilkes-barre

by killer93 on Feb 19, 2008 9:58 PM EST reply actions

Leave it

to Pittsburgh's own to finish this thing

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:01 PM EST reply actions

He got

BLASTED at the net too.

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

aha

Conklin got the assist too

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:03 PM EST reply actions

What

a comeback!!! very nice! Conklin with an A. hahaha

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:03 PM EST reply actions

old school pens hockey

get outplayed and outshot for two periods, turn it on in the third.  Classic.

by killer93 on Feb 19, 2008 10:03 PM EST reply actions

Malone

credited with the goal on the whitney shot. 2 goals for him tonight. wooo hoo

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:06 PM EST reply actions

Just a beautiful finish

Horrible start, but BEAUTIFUL finish

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:06 PM EST reply actions

PS

If you have Center ice, check out the Rangers game.  5-5 in OT.  The Habs lose, and Sens lost, then Pens are tied for first.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:08 PM EST reply actions

never mind

The Habs get a point either way.  And so do the Sens, who have just gone to OT with Philly.  Best case scenario, the Pens are a point out of the conference lead.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

what????

NYR were up 5-1??? Damn...no center ice either. :(

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

Jagr has 4 assists too

Too bad he's not a threat to Malkin and Ovi.  Hahahaha

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

Of

course he does. I miss Jagr! yeah the only game I have now is the Chicago v St. Louis game on Vs.

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

yeah that game

was 2-1 a few minutes ago.  It's wide open now

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

The game

has been a little brutal at times. I was switching to it during intermission and occaisional commercials. Must be that divisional rivalry thing. Question...did something prompt the whole "fighting in the nhl-is it a problem" garbage...or is it just that time of the season?

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

i think

That's a topic of discussion every year.  It's gonna take someone dyin on the ice from a fight to rid it from the game.  It's too emotional and too intense to remove it.  Taking fighting out of the sport would result in more cheap shots instead of straight up fights.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

TOTALLY

agree. Fighting is part of the game. Get over it.

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:26 PM EST up reply actions

Brad Boyes

from the Blues is having a good game. 2 goals. He played for our OHL team here in Erie, the Otters. Of course they havent been good since he left...

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

Bah

Ottawa just won in a shootout too.  This is ridiculous

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:22 PM EST reply actions

THAT

sucks even more. How did the Rangers manage that one?

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

They work wonders

In oh so many ways.  I wasn't really watching the game, but I was staying on top of it during the Pens game.  The score was 5-1, 5-2, and then next thing you know it's 5-5.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:26 PM EST up reply actions

haha

Nashville just beat Edmonton 5-4.  After they won, the arena plays an opera woman singing.  Get it...fat lady singing?  ho ho ho

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:29 PM EST reply actions

how

clever...syke! just kidding. I just wanted to use syke. hahahaha

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

syke...

not nearly as good as 'mint'.

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

ps

did you get that video of malkin after the flyers game?

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:30 PM EST reply actions

haha

yeah, it's up in the Malkin Learns English section

by FrankD on Feb 19, 2008 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

isnt it

awesome? Wheres that?

by kellyfisher on Feb 19, 2008 10:34 PM EST up reply actions
