Penguins vs Kings Open Thread

Pittsburgh Penguins (30-19-5) vs Los Angeles Kings (23-30-3)
In Pittsburgh at 1:00 PM
Watch on FSN/Center Ice or listen live at WXDX.com
First off, I'd like to extend a welcome to Pensburgh's newest member Killer93. Every team needs a guy who's gonna run the other team into the boards, throw down the mitts and get under other people's skin. The Pens have Georges Laraque and Jarkko Ruutu. With a name like Killer93, I'd say we now have some added muscle to the Pensburgh community. Welcome.
NOTES
A Pittsburgh win tonight and a Philly loss to the Rangers puts the Pens alone at first in the Atlantic
Don't underestimate the Kings - they beat Detroit 5-3 the other night
They also barely lost to the Flyers 3-2 in OT
Kings have won two in a row
Don't be surprised to see Sabourin in net - Therrien may want to rest Conks for tomorrow's Philly match-up
No - Sid is not back yet. But he's a huge boost to team morale with his recent skate

thanks!
Thanks for the generous welcome. I'd be happy to provide the right amount of "sandpaper" for the blog! BTW, I chose the name in honor of my favorite non-penguin player of all time, Doug Gilmour.
Really looking forward to today's game. The Kings have an awful lot of young talent and they've played well recently. Plus, they would be a potential trade partner, since it looks like they'll be missing the playoffs yet again. Mike Cammalleri might be a good fit for Sid on the wing...

Trade rumors
There's so many trade rumors surrounding the Pens right now. Even back when MAF first went down it was rumored that Curtis Joseph would be in the black and gold soon enough.
I put up a post about potential trade bait a few posts ago. I wouldn't be surprised if Staal and Christensen would be considered as well, but the payoff would have to be big because I think Therrien has a special place in his heart for Staal.

welcome
killer93.....good to have you here. Personally, I hate the Leafs but have always loved Gilmour. He was a great leader.
We better take 1st in the division today. How many opportunities have we had to take it only to have it not pan out how we had hoped? I think the odds are in our favour today.
I agree with Killer93 in that Cammalleri would be a good fit for Crosby when he returns. We know Mike has speed and good hands to keep up with our captain. It would be interesting to see the chemistry they could potentially have.
Let's go Pens.....4-2 final

A Pitt win
Today and a Philly loss would be huge. Especially with a win over Philly tomorrow - it could widen the gap to 4 points.

I think
It's universal that people feel Cammalleri would be a huge addition to the Pens, especially with Sid to work with.
As for Dougy G. - I found this the other day on a Leafs board.

Nice. I love cheeky canadian humour. Cammalleri looking good so far.

haha
I actually remember that commercial airing regularly here in Canada when I was a kid. I just had a weird flashback of my youth after watching that.

It's amazing
That Gilmour played for so many years and no one knew he was half-cow till that commercial.
by FrankD on Feb 9, 2008 2:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That's amazing
That the Kings have the 6th best power play, and yet they're the worst team in the standings.

Laraque vs Ivanans Round 1
Look at the Coyote guy at the end slamming his stick. Could you look any more like a primitive Neanderthal? I'd almost say he's trying to start a fire...
by FrankD on Feb 9, 2008 1:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
ha!
Shane Doan has always been kinda cavemanish. And Ivanans, listed at 260! He could put down some hoagies!
by killer93 on Feb 9, 2008 1:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I wasn't
100% sure if that was Doan or not. Isn't he related to Darcy Tucker in some way? Uncle?
by FrankD on Feb 9, 2008 1:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
maybe
Would be fitting, since Tucker's brother in law is another neanderthal, the great shane corson

how could we forget
Handzus is on the kings. that guy might be cro-magnon. Boy is he ugly.
Its fun to hear Cullen in the booth, but he's no Paul Coffey on the mic. He was amazingly good.
by killer93 on Feb 9, 2008 2:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Cullen
A little flat-toned. He's no Ben Stein, but he's also not exactly Chris Berman.

Oh, Killer...
I forgot...
Check this out for some tips on posting. Some of the defaults on this site can be a little difficult to deal with at first.

Whitney
Is insane since Therrien called him out.

looking good
Great effort for a day game. Kings playing a real feisty game, which I'm glad to see we're matching. Need to keep it up.
I'm still thinking how good Cammalleri will look as a winger for Sid. Good hands, and he gets open.
by killer93 on Feb 9, 2008 2:45 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Cam
As much as he'd play well with Sid, I'd also like to see what he can do with Geno. Both of them pack a super-hard shot.
You think Cammalleri is praying for the trade in the back of his mind? I know I would if I were on the worst team with a chance to get onto a playoff squad.
by FrankD on Feb 9, 2008 2:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
cam
He very well might be. Also, keep in mind that the Kings aren't happy with him going to arbitration over the summer, and probably wouldn't mind moving him.
Irregardless of whether we make that trade, what other team will add a franchise center, goalie, and grizzled playoff warrior for the stretch run? We look to be in a very good spot right now...

SOLD GOAL
Malkin threading it into the net. Amazing goal.

STAAL
Goooooooal. All thanks to a solid save from Sabu back in the Pens' own end. Thought Christensen was going to take that one home, but luckily Staal was there to pick up the trash.
by FrankD on Feb 9, 2008 2:38 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
nice
game thus far. I think a 4 goal lead with 20 to go is pretty safe. Labarbera was shining a bit in the last portion of the 2nd, minus Staals goal of course. Sabu is playing great. Couple of key saves in this one. Remember the guy has won for us including 2 SOs earlier on.
Think Malkin gets the Hattie??
I do!

Sure as hell hope so
Because this third period shutdown crap is really getting to me.

2nd Period Intermission
In honor of Rick Tocchet's recent return to the NHL, let us admire some of his finest work. In case you were wondering what he's been up to the past two years, my vote is short order cook.
by FrankD on Feb 9, 2008 2:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It's gonna take
A ridiculously pathetic performance to lose this game now. I will throw my laptop through the friggin window if they blow a 3 goal, third period lead.
by FrankD on Feb 9, 2008 3:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
good effort from the top line
Geno is ridonkulous. Need to keep him at center from here on out. And Shero better be working on his contract extension. 7 years, 7.1 million?
by killer93 on Feb 9, 2008 3:11 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Geno
It'd probably be more like 5-7 years for 35-50 Mil. Geno might be cool with your deal, but I can almost guarantee his agent won't be.
by FrankD on Feb 9, 2008 3:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
good point
Would be nice, huh?
With AO's contract numbers, Sid's now looks like a steal.
by killer93 on Feb 9, 2008 3:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
for real
I still have mixed emotions about the Ovi deal. On one hand, he no doubt deserves a hearty contract because the guy is a machine. But on the other hand, players around the league are going to start holding out for more money over a longer period of time. Kinda like the deal the Flyers offered the chode Mike Richards.

omg
4-2 with a minute to go
Looks like my prediction just may hold up. Wish i could do that every night.
About time the Pens started shooting more on the PP.

yup.....nice win......I'm gonna watch the rest of NYR/PHI now.

NICE
ALL ALONE IN 1ST. PHI LOST 2-0. MALKIN JUMPED TO 3RD IN LEAGUE SCORING.
GREAT DAY FOR THE PENGUINS OVERALL.
Oh yeah......Malone scored one goal the day after his son was born but I wonder who he will dedicate it to as his son is "nameless" thus far.

bring on philly
Good game today, good effort by all. Should be a great one tomorrow, and I can't believe that even though Sid won't be playing, NBC opted not to pick this game up. Thank goodness for NHL Centerice, the best purchase I've made in a while.
I'm going to continue to hope we make a pitch for Cammalleri. In all likelihood, it would take a centerman and another prospect. The Kings are pretty deep on defense and on the wings in their organEYEzation.
And, anybody else concerned about starting to limit Gonchar's ice time? He may very well be the one penguin that is irreplaceable, and if he goes down, uh oh...
Will chat with you all tomorrow, go Pens!
