Penguins vs Islanders Open Thread

Pittsburgh Penguins (43-25-7) vs New York Islanders (33-36-7)
In Long Island at 7:00 PM
Watch on FSN/Center Ice or listen at WXDX.com

NOTES
The Pens get a little relief on D with Scuderi's return to the lineup tonight.  Sid is once again a scratch, a decision he made entirely on his own.  Word is that Pascal Dupuis will also be a healthy scratch, as he returned to Atlanta to be with his wife for the birth of their child.

Hopefully the Pens won't have a problem dealing with the Islanders - or else Dupuis is going to have a lot of pressure on his back.  His presence on the penalty kill and power play chemistry will Hossa will surely be missed.

Conks is expected to get the start in net.

"Maybe the best thing that happened to Evgeni Malkin is when Sidney Crosby went down."
-Versus Announcers-

Jerks.

hopefully

Conklin won't have to stop 40 shots again this time.  It already looks like the Pens are coming out ready to put some volume on Dubliewicz.

Jeebus
That's two consecutive games the Pens have given up a shorty.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

I think Gonchar

needs to get one tonight to make up for that Malone deflection.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

agreed

So far it's looking like he may get two.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

damn

Sid out tomorrow night too - that's the second time this year he'll be a scratch on a game I'm going to.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

That sucks

They just interviewed him eh? He looked just as bored with those questions as I am.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

totally

it's the same crap over and over again.  Versus just thinks they're being original by asking them again with someone NEW...

I despise VS - if you couldn't tell already.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I haven't watched

much Versus, but what I'm getting on TSN is just a Versus stream tonight.  I really like the TSN broadcast though, so I'm a little disappointed.

Hopefully the Devils show up for the game tomorrow, I'm starting to doubt whether they actually sent hockey players to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd take TSN

over VS any night.  It's nice to see the Devils get a little rustled by the Pens.  I read a fact today that said Brodeur has been pulled 10 out of 60 starts vs the Pens.

The Penguins really have to worry about the Rangers right now.  They're really surging.  Keep ahead of them and all should be well in the division.  From there it's just all about the conference.

But they need to start with a win tonight.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

The Rangers have really been surprisingly good lately, they kind of came out of nowhere. I don't know how I feel about all these divisional games at the end of the season.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder

If the NHL planned the schedule like this.  It's pretty ridiculous how the entire season of any team in the Atlantic can possibly come to an end within the next week of intra-division play.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

They must have

planned it, probably to capitalize on the divisional rivalries going into the playoffs.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

1st Intermission Entertainment

I don't know why - but this made me laugh.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

Are they saying

nice things about Ryan Whitney? TSN just cut back into the game, and I swear I heard compliments about Ryan Whitney.  I don't think Versus wants me to like them.  Ryan Whitney makes me bitter.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Well

I didn't catch it, but in his defense I do believe he's gone two consecutive games with at least a point...then again, the Pens have also had three games this month with seven-goal performances.  So he better...

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

24 million dollars though.

It's a lot for the way he's been playing.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh definitely

I couldn't agree with you more.  That's $24-mil that could be spent in a much more prolific manner.

IE: Signing Hossa, re-signing Malkin - ya know the deal.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm liking

the Penguins' pressure tonight.  If it weren't for that shorty I'd feel more comfortable about this game.  As for right now - another goal would be very nice.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

They are looking

pretty good.  They're cycling the puck really well too, lots of nice passes.  Although a little trouble with the clearing on the last PK. Obv. not too big a deal though because they killed it off.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

wow

Guerin just tuned that crossbar up with one of the loudest post hits i've heard all year - and we've heard our share with Staal's luck this year.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

it's a good thing too

because it was moving too fast for Conklin.

Staal just has terrible puck luck this year, the bounces aren't going his way, and the posts are always in his way.  He's getting chances, just not points. It'll happen for him though, I'm holding out hope that he's saving up all those goals for the playoffs.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

oh man

this can't be happening

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

Is it just me

or are the Pens lookin a little lazy now?

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

They look like

they're only planning on playing 20 minutes tonight.  Maybe they'll decide to play another 20 after the intermission.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

yo

Sorry I'm late, kids.  Miss me?

by JDunman on Mar 24, 2008 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

urgh

Pens game is blacked out on Center Ice Online.  Stuck with radio.  If they punish because of Versus, they should offer Versus more widely.

by JDunman on Mar 24, 2008 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

hey Dunman

long time no talk.  Sorry for the blackout - hang on, i'll shoot ya a link to try out.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

That trivia question

I'm thinking Gretzky and Messier...

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

whoa

Sounded like a close one.

Working on that TV feed.

by JDunman on Mar 24, 2008 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

you know...

they're really looking like crap here

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

This is a little late but...

I've never used this site, so I don't know how the quality is but if you ever need a game this might be helpful.

woo!

That did it!  Thanks!

by JDunman on Mar 24, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

nice
thanks - i'll add it to the list

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

ugh

Time to put a fork in them.  They're done.

by JDunman on Mar 24, 2008 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

They just look

really sloppy.  They can't play like this against the Devils tomorrow.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That's for sure

All they need is 2 points to guarantee the playoffs - they couldn't do it tonight.  They haven't faired well against division rivals, so they better get it together before the playoffs or it's possible we'e looking at another first round elimination.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

which is part of the reason I'm hating all of this divisional stuff at the end of the season.  I think we would have fared better being on the road right now.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Dupuis

Would've been a big help on that first shorty, and probably even on the PP unit with Hossa.  This is just disapointing.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

The Habs

have adopted my 7 goal strategy, the Pens obviously forgot about it tonight.  They're only in the second though, so it might be more than a 7 goal night for them.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

eesh
Ottawa has really dropped their game - so much for their strong, early start.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

you think...

Dubliewiczstsyzkisz is just putting on a show knowing that he's mic'd up?

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

penalty!

Okay, you're down three points.  Knock off the penalties!

by JDunman on Mar 24, 2008 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

ugh

let's put this one behind us with a win tomorrow night.

by FrankD on Mar 24, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm

Well that was a fun period I joined for.  I'll drop by for the Devils game.  Hopefully we'll have a better time then.

by JDunman on Mar 24, 2008 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Let's hope we can clinch

that playoff spot tomorrow.  Enjoy your game Frank! I'm going to see the 67s (and John Tavares) tomorrow night, so I'll have to catch that game in the recaps.

by Dayna on Mar 24, 2008 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

oh man

I missed watching Tavares when I was up near Oshawa/Ajax back in December.  You'll have to fill me in too.
