NHL Awards Ceremony 2008
None of the Penguins walked away with hardware this year, but the list is still - how do I say, interesting?
Take a look at this list and tell me what you think.
Hart Trophy - Best in the league
Alex Ovechkin - Washington Capitals
Vezina Trophy - Best goaltender
Martin Brodeur - New Jersey Devils
Norris - Best defenseman
Niklas Lidstrom - Detroit Red Wings
Calder - Rookie of the year
Patrick Kane - Chicago Blackhawks
Lady Byng - Most gentlemanly player
Pavel Datsyuk - Detroit Red Wings
Frank Selke - Best defensive forward
Pavel Datsyuk - Detroit Red Wings
Jack Adams - Best coach
Bruce Boudreau - Washington Capitals
Masterton Trophy - Perseverance in hockey
Jason Blake - Toronto Maple Leafs
Lester B. Pearson - voted by the NHLPA
Alex Ovechkin - Washington Capitals
Now I won't deny Ovechkin his dues, and Jason Blake is definitely deserving of that award, but why must three Red Wings make the list? Not to mention, out of the nine awards a combined six are going to two teams. I wouldn't doubt Detroit fans are crying about Babcock not winning the Jack Adams...
Is the awards ceremony generous towards Cup winners?

I don’t think it is generous or biased, except that the awards people just saw a lot of the Redwings.
P.S.: What’s up with Martin Brodeur winning goaltender of the year?
P.P.S.: Who wants to win “Most gentlemanly player?” That’s a strange award for a hockey player to get.
I think it’s funny Brodeur won yet couldn’t get past the first round. And the guy who beat him in that round, Lundvist, was snubbed. I just think he’s over-hyped anyways because he’s in NYC. Pens did him in after 5 games.
Most gentlemanly player translates to : “pansy.”

I agree on both points. I think Brodeur is past his prime, but still good and Lundvist is a NYCer. No thanks.
I was going to use a different “p” word in my first post, but I didn’t think that was appropriate for Pensburgh. “Pansy” is a good alternative.
Who ended up with more hits in the finals series, anyway, Orpik or Datsyuk? (which says nothing about the quality of thunderosity of the hits)
I think he was trying to shed the gentlemanly image in the playoffs.
The surprise there was that Datsyuk picked up the Selke, too, instead of Zetterberg. The trio of finalists for these awards were announced well before the Cup finals began, and it was pretty obvious that Datsyuk was winning the Lady Byng, and Lidstrom would win the Norris Trophy long before the Wings played the Penguins. You’re not seriously contesting those awards, are you?
As for Babcock….I’m not at all a fan of the coach of the best team getting rewarded for not screwing things up….I voted Boudreau myself in some ESPN poll when the finalists were
announced
One other thing….as far as voters seeing the Red Wings, I’m not sure that’s accurate….I have a Red Wings/versus schedule calendar, and I was pretty shocked at how infrequently the Wings were on TV. The Eastern Conference got far more exposure than did the Western Conference, if I’m not mistaken…
I’m not contesting the awards – I did that months ago when Gonchar was not included in the list of Norris Trophy finalists ;-).
Aside from Malkin in relative contention for the Hart, not a single Penguin player or coach in my mind was worthy of a mention. MAYBE Therrien for taking the team as far as he did in the past two seasons and MAYBE Fleury as some sort of comeback player of the year, but the majority of the guys weren’t up for anything (outside of the aforementioned Gonchar).
