Hello Hossa, goodbye Malone (to Columbus)?
Spotted this on a blog for the Columbus Dispatch.
It's all up to Pittsburgh Penguins winger Marian Hossa now. The Penguins have made Hossa a long-term contract offer -- believed to be seven years, $50 million -- and expect to hear back from him in a couple of days.
If Hossa accepts the contract -- and the Penguins expect he will -- Ryan Malone's days in the Steel City are finished.
At that point, it's believed the Blue Jackets will swoop in and trade for Malone's negotiating rights to get him signed before the July 1 free agency free-for-all. What will the Blue Jackets give up? I've heard Dan Fritsche, straight up, and I've heard a second- or third-round draft pick.
What do you think?

Columbus?? I’m not sure how I feel about . . .
I mean, if he wants to play in Columbus - and all indications are he’d be happy to play here - why not just wait until July 1 and get it done.
Really?! I’ve never heard any indication he wants to play in Columbus . . or anywhere but Pittsburgh for that matter. I don’t think he’s ever said he doesn’t want to play in Columbus, but who really wants to move to Columbus?
I’d think about it a lot more if I saw this somewhere other than a blog for a Columbus paper.
Bring hockey back to Louisville!
Even the ESPN article links over to the paper.
This one was exceptionally funny: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=15715
He even believes Malone and Malkin could be a package deal to Columbus. Some people just have way too much time on their hands.

Good find. I’m pretty sure Malone is gone if Hossa is signed for a big deal. Malone knows what he’s worth and also knows he won’t get it if Hossa is signed to a long-term offer. Despite any feelings that Malone may take a hometown discount, I think that is all a farce. He’s not getting any younger and knows where the money is.

I have no problem with this, Hossa is the superior player with a better track record, we can get a power forward somewhere else.
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Agree. As great as Malone played this year, who’s to say he didn’t pull a Rick Tocchet and play his best hockey alongside Crosby, Malkin and Sykora similar to how Toc did it with Lemieux, Jagr, Stevens and Francis?

Agreed. If I had to choose I’d rather have Hossa than Malone. Although, I’m a huge Malone fan. He brings the “energy” that a lot of teams lack. And I think he’d be hard to replace with just any power forward.
Yeah, no one would argue
Malone isnt an intergral part of the team, but Hossa is an all star and one of the best around, and you certainly cant fault Malone for going for the green….but I think this is the right move.

I’ll miss his ability to take a puck to the face, get up, and keep playing. Next to his ability to engage in fistacuffs, that’s probably one of his best attributes that may also find him rolling in some dough as well.

I'm a huge backer of Malone
and if it comes down to Hossa or Malone, then obviously Hossa is the better choice for Pittsburgh… I just think that it may be Hossa or Malone & Orpik… and that’s what bothers me.
I’m probably sounding like a broken record, but I’d rather have Malone and Orpik than Hossa.
Go 'Stros!
Well Orpik would no doubt add some D. And Malone, well we know what he can do in front of the net. But if Pitt is really looking to turn this into a run-and-gun offense, it’s going to have to remain high-speed with speedy passing and that forced chemistry they’ll develop in the off-season. I think Malone would just be regaled to second line winger and second line PP and I think he’s ready to step it up to a top line that he just won’t get in Pitt.
As for Orpik, I think we can expect Goglioski to make the jump this year similar to Letang’s jump in October this past season. So even if we lose the big 44, we’ll get the odd 67 in his place.
