Penguins recall D Goligoski
What??? I definitely wasn't expecting this... Am I missing something?
The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled defenseman Alex Goligoski from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL), it was announced Sunday by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.
Goligoski currently ranks second in the AHL playoffs with 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) in 19 postseason games as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has advanced to the Calder Cup Finals vs. the Chicago Wolves. He recorded 38 points (10 goals, 28 assists) in 70 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton during the regular season and tied for second on the team with a plus-15 rating. Goligoski was also selected to play for the PlanetUSA squad at the AHL All-Star Classic.

Bizarre – maybe Scuderi was pretty hurt on that play the other night.
Perhaps Letang/Gogo can manage the blueline together.
Or maybe I’m just over-thinking it all and he’ll just be there in case of an emergency.
Or maybe – maybe it’s a way for Therrien to test him out so he can try and unload Whitney in the offseason.
Kind of sucks for WBS though. They’re in a healthy run for the Calder and now have to adjust on defense.
There may also be a chance that since Letang has been a scratch he’s attending Bourdon’s funeral. The Penguins’ web site did a whole story on how he was super close with him.

Goligoski
I think this is to fill for Letang, should the pens extend the series. Letang may be done this year. It might be too much to ask a kid to shake off that kind of loss to play a game. I don’t think we’ll see Goligoski dress.
Gogo was awesome in game one of the Calder cup. He’s definitely a playmaker from the blueline, and I hope he’s this effective in the NHL. He might end up being a Mike Weaver type – remember him? Very small, very skilled, too good for the AHL but might not be as productive in the NHL.

Mike Weaver is unfortunately that guy who just couldn’t make the transition. Sometimes I really wonder what those guys think when they go from being so good in the AHL and then benched/scratched in the Show.

not the same situation, really, but...
There’s a guy on the Red wings, Mark Hartigan, who was supplanted by Darren Helm a few games into the playoffs. He got a cup of coffee and a ring with the Ducks last year, bounced between the minors and Detroit this year, was the 4th line center going into the playoffs, and then disappeared sommewhere between Detroit and Nashville. Gotta wonder how he’s feeling, getting healthy scratched every night, so close and yet so far from the ice.
