Stanley Cup Finals - Game 5 [Open Thread]

In Detroit at 8:00 p.m.
Watch on NBC, Yahoo! or listen live on WXDX.com.
NOTES
This is it - there's nothing left to say that hasn't been said already.
Holmstrom is back.
Goglioski is most likely a scratch in place of Letang who has traveled for Bourdon's funeral.
Should Detroit win (or even lose for that matter), outside of Detroit fans' thread comments, they can expect any fanshots or videos that hold a pro-Detroit/anti-Pittsburgh stance to be deleted. You're all welcome guests here, but this isn't a Red Wings blog. Go here for your Red Wings. If the article is non-biased (or Pro-Penguins) then it will hold - otherwise you'll just be wasting your time.

Fired up good to go – here’s to a good game (and preferably a Pitt victory).
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Extend It
Seems like everyone, mainly media guys I’ve seen so far, is saying this one is over. Hopefully Malkin will show, Crosby will have another one like his game 4 and the Penguins will keep this series going. Good luck.
Green Bandwagon: Celtics '08 or bust. Are you on the bandwagon?
Thanks man – good luck to you in the finals too. Slap that smirk off Kobe’s face.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
very strange case of deja vu is right...
First time the Penguins have scored in Detroit in this series. We shall see where this leads.
now that i think about it, it was 1996, against the nordilanche, cuz it was the last straw for Paul Coffey in Detroit, and we shipped him to the wasteland that was the Whalers
even though Detroit has dominated statistically...
...the Penguins have done the damage on the scoreboard. Wow, 2-0 now.
While more goals would be nice, it’s really going to come down to Fleury between the pipes to decide whether Pitt walks away with this one or Detroit steals it back.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
I still like it...
but yes, it’s TOO repetitive.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions
ugh – Detroit gets one. Looks like redirects are all they’ll manage past Fleury tonight. He’s looking good.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
at this point, games like these...
where it is at the highest magnitude, you’re much more likely to see any goals scored in that fashion (redirects and weird caroms or bounces).
call it both ways. Orpik should have been rung up for sticking the hip out….
that trip on the clear could have been called too
Instead, Pens on a pp from a play where orpik was looking at the ref all the way down the ice
It looks like the Pens are trying to win the neutral zone and then just drop it in. If they really think they can maintain a 2-1 lead they are out of their minds. The other system was working, keep the pressure on.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
MAYBE a penalty? I mean, I know nbc is all about the commercial money instead of serving the game, but…can we at least not leave the fans hanging on if there is a penalty or not?
my sentiments exactly. It looks like Crosby said, “You’re giving me two?” But what do I know?
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
every Red Wing loves that cross-ice drive…they just try to ownt he offensive zone
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Man, I wonder what’s wrong with Sykora. If he’s hurt, and Malkin’s playing hurt, then it’s going to take a monumental effort to turn this entire series around.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
his face is broken – Pitt is taking out their own guys now. this is getting ridiculous
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
oh bleep, i saw the blood pouring out his nose…pens dropping like flies
hope it isn’t like the puck yzerman took to the face a few years ago, took him out of the playoffs his last year
shame of it from your point of view, that was a ridiculously effective sequence for the Pens right before that shot to Malone’s face
Wow – Malone and Gonch expected back? THIS is playoff hockey to the extreme.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
highlight reel save
great glove stop by Fleury… big one indeed

too many hooks and holds in this game....
a penalty like that was bound to be called and Tyler Kennedy got caught.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:14 PM EDT reply actions
Wanna get a perspective on hooks and hold-ups in a postlockout NHL? Watch video from the 90s…seriously, it’s like night and day. I watched a classic Pens game today during their 92 playoff run and was amazed and what you could get away with back then. You forget sometimes…
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Oh I know that...
problem is that sometimes I still see it happening… just not anywhere near as much and as bad.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah. The most inconsistent thing to come from the lockout was those obstruction calls. It’s like goaltending in basketball – entirely up to the discression of the ref.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
though, I don’t understand the comment “no chance for MAF”, because when it goes between your legs, you always have a chance, you just screwed up
Not so much screwed up – I mean, he had the puck on lockdown before it got tipped. One second away from being a save
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
that was quick...
you talk about capitalizing on a power play right away, that was it. 2-2.

Who wants to be Darren McCarty?
Flashing back to 1997, and his amazing cup clinching goal (well, it would have been Lidstrom’s honor, except Vernon gave up a goal late)....
Who wants to be the hero today?!!!
notice that last Detroit chance...
...was just like the tying goal two nights ago? It was where Cleary jumped up in front of Fleury to allow the shot through.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:21 PM EDT reply actions
Everybody in Detroit is not likely to be online anyway...
Even Christy isn’t around tonight. If this was a potential Cup clincher in New York, I wouldn’t be online either.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn't know that.
If your hometown team is playing in your own building with a chance to win a title, there’s no chance in hell I’d be chatting online. I’d be in a midtown Manhattan bar or restaurant right now.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
THERE ITIS!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Wisconsin boy, wonder if the State Journal might have a tidbit on the Badger with a cup winning goal tomorrow?
Or am I getting ahead of myself?
He’s taken a beating – it wouldn’t surprise me if every guy is banged-up in some way, shape or form.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
New question: who wants to be brendan shanahan?
The empty net goal that finishes the deal, a la the 2002 cup clincher
he probably feels rushed – everyone feels rushed on the Pens. Detroit gives little to no time to shoot and Pitt can’t handle that.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
on the ropes...
The Red Wings can taste the Cup right now, so they’re obviously going for the knockout punch. If the Penguins have anything left, they’ll put pressure on Ozzie… something that’s been non-existent in this period.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:31 PM EDT reply actions
took some wacking to put that in...
and the Penguins survive to play another period in this dying season.

talbot, after all those hits….man, I’ve been at a championship hockey event before, Wisconsin-BC ncaa chamionship a couple of years ago, those last minutes last FOREVER….and then BC hit the post with 2 seconds to go, but it didn’t go in
this is much worse, it feels like the Anaheim goal in game 5 of the WCF last year….except…..it doesn’t, there, all Wings fans knew it was over at that point, here, the Wings still have the momentum, it still feels like this is it, and there will be an immortalized OT Stanley Cup winning goal to be celebrated
If I were an announcer I would definitely turn to the camera now and say, “Well confidence isn’t an issue for ahtrap tonight. But will his offense turn this around to claim Lord Stanley? We’ll find out in just a few. It’s the Stanley Cup Finals on NBC.”
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Wow. I’ll give you guys credit for that one. Franzen had the opportunity to end this came but couldn’t clear it. Unreal. Go Wings.
Go Tigers
Talbot's goal reminds me vividly of one...
Valeri Zelepukin tied Game 7 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals in the same fashion… very eeriely similar… final seconds of the third period… jamming and jamming away at the puck to shove it past Mike Richter’s left pad to go over the goalline.
Tonight… we saw nearly the exact same thing with Talbot here. But who will win tonight? We’ll soon find out.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:47 PM EDT reply actions
Do you aspire to be an on-air announcer? Because that sounds like you’re ready to head to a commercial break.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
LOL, maybe I should.
I admit I do some practice play-by-play, but for hockey it is SO hard to do it. It’s a skill you have to really master to call an NHL game, that’s for sure.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Hockey and football are the two hardest by far. Hockey beats football though because the action never stops and you have to really keep an eye on the line changes. Baseball…no, golf wins hands down as the easiest to call.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Last OT Cup winning goal?
I can’t recall any since Arnott got the Devils past the Stars in 2000 (right?)
am I forgetting one?
there were a bunch all together, what with Krupp in 96 for the Nordilanche, Brett Hull’s illegal goal in 99 and Arnott the next year
interestingly...
all those goals were by the road team though… I wish it could’ve happened in New York in 1997 for the Rangers.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions
All i can think about is the Pittsburgh OT goal against Buffalo by Kasparitis
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
yes, Arnott was the last to score an overtime Cup-winning goal.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
haha i was thinking the same. I’m surprised he didn’t pop in with less than a minute to go to try and brag about this.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
I think it was Bobby Nystrom...
the last player from the home team to win a Cup with an overtime goal… 1980 Islanders.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 11:09 PM EDT reply actions
close call there...
The Penguins had the Red Wings pinned in their zone due to fatigue. Big faceoff here.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 11:15 PM EDT reply actions
Kennedyyyyy the only forward without a goal in the playoffs and he can’t get a shot off
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
how did that not end it...
holy crap that was close… should’ve been over on that play
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 11:24 PM EDT reply actions
unless it's an immediate shot...
off this faceoff, we’re looking at a second overtime… yeah, I know. Duh.
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 11:28 PM EDT reply actions
Malkin gave all he had to give on that one shift… He looked dead on his feet after that one.
It was a great shift though.
No doubt the best shift of this series for him. He’s been limping against Detroit since Game 1. If Pittsburgh wins this I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the game-winner.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
It wasn’t a bad call. You can’t let Fleury get out of position like that and if Detroit scored that one it would’ve been a horrible way to end the season. Fortunately for the NHL the Pens didn’t capitalize on the PP or you’d have heard it from every direction.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
I think I saw Christy from Winging it in Motown holding her face in agony on that Talbot goal.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Yeah, she sits up on the boards when she isn’t working. She has a pic on her page of her on a getty images pic.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
This is the one she had on her site a while ago…
http://www.behindthejersey.com/wp-admin/images/detnews.jpg
Two in from the left
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Ah, I can imagine that happening.
Cannot blame her though. I think both her blogs are on my blog roll. I have to ask her if I should keep both or just have her Winging It In Motown site.

Please check it out, I love to write.
I'm actually doing okay for now....
The intermission has saved me for now. I haven’t even got any work on my presentations for a long time. Still can’t believe we only had 25 seconds to go!!! :(

so be it. At least this dive had some weight to it and reason. Osgood was just being a jacko
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Shut up McGuire…the NHL just doesn’t want any question on the game-winner, regardless of what team does it
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
BS call
that penalty is ridiculous… Cleary didn’t run Fleury, sorry
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions
in a game like this, why should he?
unless you’re 100% positive you have time, don’t play the puck and stay in your crease
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 2, 2008 11:55 PM EDT reply actions
i was being sarcastic. I obviously want him to play the puck, but I’d hate for something like that to cost us the season.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Oddly enough – the Ruutu/Hall/Roberts line is the freshest set of guys on the bench. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot of them in this period.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Talbot killed again and yet right back on the puck no time at all. That guy is all hustle.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Notice how they didn’t show the penalty box after the cal…that’s exactly what he was doing.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
wow, Pittsburgh penalty in overtime?
oooo, shocker, LOL

cannot believe this game...
going to a third friggin’ overtime? just end it already, geez
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 3, 2008 12:15 AM EDT reply actions
It’s insane to think that with 35 seconds to go in the game Talbot scored and made it 40 minutes longer
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
The Pens have no respect for a tired girl’s early morning work schedule. I’m blaming any stupid mistakes I make tomorrow on them.
I wouldn’t even apply. That was the swaying factor in my job decision this summer. Not the pay, the fact that we open later than at the other job.
eh, it’s a good opportunity. I couldn’t turn it down. I don’t like to sleep anyways.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
good to see ya, Danya...
not to worry, you deserve to be given some slack… this is an extra special night to stay up late

God, I wish these announcers would go away
I cannot stand listening to them anymore! (doesn’t include Doc or Eddie O, here)

This reminds me of the FLyers Pens game back in 2000… I was in college at the, our whole suite stayed up until around 3am if I remember. Of course, we’re all Flyer fans…
stayed up for that game too… Steve Levy calling the game… too bad I haven’t heard him in recent memory unless you cound the Final Four in Denver
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 3, 2008 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions
I gave up after three OTs of that one…shoud have stuck it out, but I didn’t have a dog in that fight
I remember Conklin had to step in for Luongo because he had a ‘lower body injury.’ We all know it was explosive diarrhea, but the NHL likes to cover those things up.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
little story about that game, 1990 Boston/Edmonton, I had a big paper (well, big for high school freshmen) due the next day, so I missed most of the game.
Well, so I thought, I turned on hockey night in canada’s coverage with about 5 minutes to go….and then I watched what essentially turned into game 2, the triple overtime marathon that was finally ended up former Red Wing Petr Klima
Now that I think about it, this is the 4th triple overtime SCF game I’ve watched, that one, the Uwe Krupp Nordilanche game, the Larionov one I cited earlier….
Craziness, that’s what it is
yes we know – Detroit wins the Stanley Cup, Pitt wins game 6. This is becoming a cliche of itself at this point.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
at this point….Leno’s time is up, conan’s being seriously eaten into….I hope they just say screw it, we’ll give a proper coverage of the celebration (if there is one)
That’s probably the last thing they’re ingesting. They’d crash in 5 minutes. Probably just carbs, protein and water.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Look at those empty seats. Those are all the “I have work tomorrow” people.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
“I stayed up till 3am” is the last thing i want my surgeon telling me when I’m on the table at 8am
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
Detroit fans are probably thinking Scuderi punched himself in the face really quick to draw the blood.
FrankD from Pensburgh.com
this could be the game here...
4-minute penalty to Jiri Hudler
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 3, 2008 12:45 AM EDT reply actions
Just wanted to check in...
...and say congrats!
I do feel bad for those people in Detroit who stayed the entire game and now have to go to work tomorrow.
lol
I didn’t think you would. Nor should you.
But as an impartial observer, that has to really suck.
that’s all she wrote… a penalty decides this game, surprise surprise

good night, be back possibly Wednesday… maybe my prediction will come true then
by cityhockeyfever on Jun 3, 2008 12:48 AM EDT reply actions
What a game!!!
Syk’s called shot was awesome, but you have to go back and give credit to Talbot for keeping us in the game.
Malkin was pathetic tonight… I’ve been kind of defending him all along, but I can’t do it after tonight. He just seems to have no confidence right now, passing the puck to other players to carry in… I don’t know what his problem is.
I was happy with the way Ruutu played once he actually started getting some playing time in the overtime. He almost won it for us in the 2nd OT.
2 more wins to go!!!
Go 'Stros!
