Hossa to become UFA
Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero said he has made an offer to potential unrestricted free agent forward Marian Hossa, but Hossa said he wants to test the free agent marketplace before he makes any final decision.
"I can't say I'm shocked," Shero said. "All I can say about the experience so far in the negotiations is that it hasn't really been negotiations. It's about what's important to us. How his time has been in Pittsburgh. Realistically, he has taken us for a test drive for three months."
From here.
Umm.. if the Pens are planning on going much higher than they have already offered, then it looks like they need to maybe change their priorities. If they aren't going to get Hossa, and they still lose players like Malone, then there's going to be trouble in Pittsburgh.
Maybe all of the talk from Hossa about wanting to stay in Pittsburgh and it not being about the money was exactly that... talk.
More.. from here
Marian Hossa and his agent informed the Penguins on Saturday that a multi-year contract offer that averages just over $7 million annually was not enough to prevent him from testing the free-agent market July 1.Penguins general manager Ray Shero said yesterday after the NHL draft at Scotiabank Place that the offer may not be on the table when Hossa becomes an unrestricted free agent.
"It's very fair, I believe," Shero said of the Penguins' offer -- details of which he did not reveal. "There was a firm offer on the table."
Shero said he has not ruled out Hossa possibly returning to the Penguins, but stressed that his focus is now squarely on the 11 other potential unrestricted free agents from his Cup final roster.
Several players were told during end-of-season meetings the Penguins would pursue a new contract with Hossa, a favorite linemate for captain Sidney Crosby. That slot now likely belongs to defenseman Brooks Orpik, who would prefer to sign a long-term deal before July 1.

totally useless comment
but I saw the headline, and my first thought was, hmmm, what MMA league does “UFA” stand for?
Been watching too much versus after the hockey season ended, that seems like all they show anymore.

As long as we don’t wind up losing everyone in the process, or over-paying for the ‘wrong’ guys.
