One Year Deal?
that seems really odd, why would the Wings sign him for such a short term when he could just leave again, its not like theyre missing anything, they won the Cup…..and for that matter why would Hossa only want a one year deal, theres not much security in that.

I think they’ll need to re-sign Zetterberg next year – may need the money.
And I hate him. I definitely hate him.

Right, but for Hossa side, why would he only sign for one year, his value will never be higher than it is right now; he dispelled all his post season myths and looked great almost the entire time he was with the Pens, so it doesnt really add up to why he would turn down multiple 50 million dollar deals.
This is very peculiar…and quite a blow after the let Malone go

I read somewhere ....
It was his idea to do a one year deal b/c he has a lot of respect for the RedWings organization, and he feels he’ll have equal value next year when he’ll be 30.
Seems strange to me, maybe he never like Pittsburgh, theyre the younger team and as such, should compete at least as long, if not longer, than the Wings who are slightly older.
This just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but seeing as the Thrashers used the Pens 1st rounder on a guy from a Junior B team, its not so bad i guess.

What's Next?
So now that Hossa is out of the picture what is next? Obviously we will continue to try and lock up Orpik and maybe sign Jagr, but who else is out there? Could we (would we want to?) get into the Sundin race?

Well Hossa is out for a year, that’s certain. Sundin – I don’t want him. (but that’s me)
Orpik is apparantly, if you can believe it, talking to Detroit also.
Jagr seems like a healthy and viable option.

I can’t believe they’d have the room. But I guess you do when you stock up on D, have 2 (now 3) solid forwards, and a two-way forward like Franzen.
Then there’s always Osgood, the mediocre goaltender who backs it all up. That right there is how you can afford it.

Where were you when Hossa signed with the Wings and stabbed every Pens fan in the back?
I was in a meeting, received a text message and excused myself to go to the bathroom, where I proceeded to text back “WHAT THE F” before returning to the remaining 20 minutes of my meeting

interesting
weird though, I’m not particularly excited by Hossa signing with the Red Wings….
I do like the one year deal though, it keeps the money open for next year when free agency might alter the Red Wings landscape.
Ok, Conklin, Hossa, who’s next? Orpik? Can you imagine three D-lines consisting of Lidstrom/Rafalski, Kronwall/Stuart and Lilja/Orpik? That would be ridiculous.
As for conklin, personally, I think he’s just following the rumors of who is going to get the next outdoor game….he played in the Edmonton one a couple of years ago….and didn’t he play against buffalo for the Pens? Wasn’t that when MAF was hurt? If the next one is Detroit-Chicago, I bet Osgood comes down with a mysterious inury the week before….

I was so far from winning…
I’m hoping for a Jagr deal now, or Naslund, or both.
I think Hossa better cross his fingers he has a good season next year, because I don’t think his price is going to go up. This is a bad move if he gets injured or doesn’t play well etc. 1 year deals are not optimal for young players like that.
Montreal or Pitt. are both contenders next year, and both had better offers on the table. He must really like Detroit.
Wish we would have offered Ruutu the three years, I wanted to see him back in Pitt.

True about Fleury, need to save cap space for that.
Naslund could be had for about half of what was being asked for Hossa. For about 9-million a season both Jarg and Naslund could be signed, plus Jagr’s would likely be a short deal (1-2 yrs) and next year Malkin and Staal are still under entry-level deals, so it could be affordable.

Malkin and Jagr would actually work out well this year financially for that very reason you mentioned.
If Malkin is still on the entry deal, he’s not topping a mill. And Jagr, who remains uncertain with his career at this point, wants an option factored in wherever he goes. Sykora and Jagr are fairly close (Sykora rents Jagr’s apartment).
If Jagr wants to opt out next year – sweet. Because that is money that can open up for the Malkin deal without risking too much overheard. Naslnd would probably lock on for a year or two and gel with Sykora in no time at all (again).

Neither deal, Naslund or Jagr seems to be a long term deal, just a year or two, which works well for the cap, but also for these guys. Both of them are probably getting close to retiring from the NHL. Enticing Jagr to come to Pitt. will be the most important part. Like someone said before, he still has a home there, he has ties there, he knows the ownership well (ok, Lemieux/Jagr… it was kind of an understatement). It can’t be all about the money, he could make a lot more in Europe and be closer to home, (and play a shorter, less physically demanding season) so I think part of the attraction of Pittsburgh is the fact that he knows the team and the city.
I was reading the Post-Gazette sports chat transcript and some of the people, and the guy answering the questions, all seemed really concerned about Jagr/Sid and Jagr’s potentially being a negative force in the locker room, but I’m not sure about that. Taunting that went on from him to Sid about diving is part of him playing up for the playoffs, and if they are seriously staring the Cup down next season I don’t think either of them are going to spend too much time complaining.
This seems like a good deal for Jagr, short deal, on his own terms, and a few final shots to make serious Cup runs to end his career. I’m hoping he’ll sign.

The Jagr/Sid thing was a concern of mine too because Jagr played second fiddle to Lemieux in the 90s, sucked on his own in Washington and was just a has-been by the time he hit New York (despite his 120+ pt season). Rangers fans have hated him since he’s hit the blueshirts and up until three days ago wanted him gone. But now that they have absolutely NO forwards, they’re begging him to stay.
