Pittsburgh Penguins' Ryan Whitney Out For Start of Season
Promoted from fanposts : FD
According to the Trib, Ryan Whitney will be out until at least January. Apparently, he went through the entire 07-08 season with a bad left foot. He had surgery to repair the problem on Friday. Here is the link to the story . Hopefully, the surgery was sucessful and he will be ready to go better than ever in January. The good thing is that the Pens are solid on defense.

I guess that would explain why he wasn’t exactly playing so well.

I guess that might also explain why Darryl Sydor is still around – despite rumours that he wants a trade.

Ya know, the more I think about it, why the hell did he wait till the end of August to decide on this surgery? He could’ve gone under the knife in June and perhaps back in the lineup by no later than November.

He said in the Trib. article that he was trying other non-invasive procedures and that he was consulting with three doctors. Here’s the quote:
“Obviously, had we known surgery was inevitable, we would have had it in June,” Whitney said. "Ray was great about trying to treat this without surgery, but nothing we tried worked.
What I want to know is how he played all season like that – he said in the interview he first felt pain playing against Ottawa in the playoffs, the season before last. That’s a long time to play in pain.

Yeah I read that quote, and I know sometimes athletes think they can get around things without surgery, but wouldn’t it have been a good idea to guarantee a return before November? I mean, like you said – he played for over a year with that pain. Even Sid went through the first round of the playoffs last season with a broken toe and fractured foot – and still managed to play at a top level.
I guess I’m also kinda mad that he played through the pain and sacrificed ice time for someone who may have actually executed better on the PP…

It's almost a relief that he needs surgery
kind of gives him an excuse for last season

Not that his season was terrible...
but many expected more

Absolutely. 40 points was a pretty pitiful without ‘some’ kind of excuse. I guess we’ll let it slide.
In any case, I wonder what the Penguins will do with the D. Perhaps this means a promotion for Letang on the blue line for the PP and perhaps even a call up for Goglioski to get his skates wet again.

After going through last offseason trying non-invasive procedures, you’d think he would have done something last season while in pain. Though, with Crosby going down and the rest of the Pens stepping up, I could see why he’d want to hang in there. Gotta give that to the guy.
I'm sorry, Mr. Hossa, but I'm afraid we can't be friends anymore. Why? Because I hate you.
