Finally, some word of progress around the ice of Mellon.
Well, in this case, Kitchener, Ontario.
But hey, hockey is finally starting to swing back into action. When you hear word of prospect camp you might as well start sharpening the skates and taping up the sticks.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will hold a prospects camp from September 9-15 in Kitchener, Ontario. The Penguins’ prospects will have several days of practices before competing against prospects from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, and Florida Panthers.
Happy to see Alex Goligoski's name thrown around in the mix. He hardly raised eyebrows during his short stint up during various injuries that plagued starters last season, but he's done a solid job in the WBS squad and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see him take a spot on the third or fourth line.
Consider this - GoGo set an AHL record for most points by a defenseman in the playoffs with 28 (4G, 24A). Don't forget he was called up for two games during the finals when Kris Letang was on bereavement leave. Two more games might have put him easily over 30.
Luca Caputi is one of the prospects in the system who exhibits unlimited potential. This kid is fast and skilled beyond his years. The only thing he's missing is some genuine NHL experience. Hopefully prospect camp gets him in the feel for things and even more so the preseason. I'd love to see this kid play with the big names, even if it is preseason. People around the Penguins' system are already saying he's better than last year's draft drought Angelo Esposito.
The vets report on September 16...21 days away.
Get fired up.
