Busy day for sports in Pitt today. After today's game a bunch of fans will likely shoot over to Heinz Field for the Steelers vs. Ravens matchup. Winner goes to the Super Bowl. If you want to follow the action here on SBN then make sure you hit up BehindTheSteelCurtain.
On to hockey...
The Rangers squeaked out a win Friday night against the Blackhawks in overtime thanks to a Chris Drury goal. Given two points for the win, the Rangers moved back into first place in the division.
The Pens aren't doing all that well against the Rangers this year, as indicated by their 0-1-2 record. If anything we can at least find some salvation in the fact that Pitt has at least managed those two OT points. That's the kind of take-what-you-can-get hockey the Pens are playing right now.
Today though you'd better expect the Pens want two. An injury-ridden win over the Ducks the other night can say a lot for this squad. They're winning while down some of the big names. Maybe it's enough to ride out the week with.
Brooks Orpik is out. Sidney Crosby, Rob Scuderi and Kris Letang are game-time decisions.

Yeah I’ve seen a few there too. Normally if anyone needs em someone in the thread has a good idea on where to find it. Thanks for the heads up though.

I’m fired up for this one too. Come on now – big statement with a win tonight

Can’t afford to not have him against the Rangers. I didn’t know what to expect from the Ducks the other night but we definitely need him for the Rangers

I don’t know if it’s just me, but doesn’t it feel like the Pens have been on the power play within the first two minutes of the game for the past month?

This is a national broadcast, we can expect a few more…

I don’t know if I’m familiar with the hammock graphic?

Oh man, you’re missing out. They pair up Marc and Jordan in columns and talk about pointless things like favorite food, favorite birthday gift, favorite color, favorite whatever…
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
It’s a comparison of the two brothers and one of the categories is “Favourite gift” and Jordan’s is a hammock.
Oh, sounds awesome! Hopefully they whip it out for this broadcast.

hockey on NBC sounds funny, it keeps triggering football and I see ice, i’m confused, I need coffee.
I still have a big tin of Tim Horton’s from when I was up in Toronto last year

Within 2 blocks of home I have a Starbucks, Second Cup, 2 Bridgeheads and a Timothy’s, but no Tim Hortons. It’s a sad life.
Second Cup wasn’t bad when I was up in Ottawa. Starbucks is about a mile away from me in any direction.

eh, just a lame joke/reference to the 1990’s when they were actually semi decent
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
Oh, sorry! I vaguely remember hockey in the 90s, and Vanbiesbrook is one of the names that sticks out. Other than that…
hah no prob. I just remember because they busted up the Pens in I think 1995.

The Rangers may have taken the first three, but at least we stand a good chance of making them look bad on national television
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
Is it just me, or does Pierre Maguire always take the other side of the argument? And by other side I mean the less popular/stupid one?
So obvious that NBC focused this topic for a national broadcast. That makes me sick.

Let’s keep it going here in the second. Get one more and pull ahead by three. Then I’ll willingly accept the neutral zone play

Honestly, I didn’t really see it either, but I was really impressed with Crosby getting around Redden like that, it was impressive.
Damn right. I get what you’re saying – he earned the penalty shot. I’m with ya

Plenty of power play opportunities this game. Gotta make em count

Imagine my surprise
I had no idea this game was on NBC today, and lo and behold, 3-0
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Godard and Orr. Man, Orr just wanted to get some motivation for his team. Don’t give in God.

i just don’t like them because 1, they remind me of when girls wear “girl color” jerseys of teams, and 2, if i don’t pay close attention, i have a hard time discerning who has the puck, and 3, they cause me to write run-on sentences.
It’s the original colors though. It’s not entirely though because the logo was a bit different in 1967, but I like the change of pace as well. Plus something else for me to buy…

I think fighting has to go too
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I really do
I dont have a problem with spontaenous fighting b/t real players, but goons who cant skate, cant shoot and cant pass arent really hockey players and they slow the game down
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
i don’t think that’s really a huge problem in the league.
by ChristineNYR on Jan 18, 2009 1:57 PM EST up reply actions
Well the whole goonery thing is really losing its spark int he league. No team wants a guy who can just fight anymore. They want guys like Malone and Cooke who will fight on occasion and pick up 40-50 points a year. Just take one look at a guy like Georges Laraque. He’s sitting out a lot this season
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
I just think its more exciting to watch when its wide open
passing, skating and shooting and checking of course…the fighting has literally nothing to do with hockey….i guess I prefer Olympic style, I think the NHL should widen the ice as well.
But ive had this argument over many a Labatts and I know Im in the minority on this issue
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
It’s all good, you’re entitled to your opinion. But the game is more wide open because of fighting. The hard-hitting goon will lay off a skilled player because he knows repercussions exist if he messes with the skill or tries a cheap shot. If fighting doesn’t exist, what’s stopping him from dishing a cheap shot to take a scorer out for the game/season and give his team an advantage?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
I see what your saying, but youre missing my point
in my NHL there will be no goons, bc theyre not good enough to be on the ice b/c they dont possess any real skills, theyre simply there to fight other goons….its makes no sense to me
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
No I definitely see your point, but hockey is an emotional game that can turn even a settled player into a fighter. Look at Sid. Get under his skin and he’ll fight. Sykora dropped mitts last season too. Any kind of hard hit, too hard or not, cheap shot or not, will lead to retaliation. You can’t let a guy skate around the ice knowing he got the best of you. Fighting allows players to show, “Hey look, you hit me pretty hard back there but if you think you’re gonna do it for the rest of the game you’re wrong.”
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
right, again i dont have a problem with fights b/t "real" players
its the guys whos sole purpose for being on the roster is to fight other guys whos sole purpose is also to fight is what I dislike.
fighting happens in all sports, but hockey is the only one with designated fighters.
so thats my contention
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
True. But like we’ve both said, those designated fighters are starting to disappear. Who knows? Maybe the NHL will weed fighting out naturally?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
who knows?
Id be interested to see how fighting either attracts or repels fringe fans
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I don’t think it’ll have a big effect. It’s about even how many people watch for fights vs how many watch for the fluidity and crescendos of the games.
by ChristineNYR on Jan 18, 2009 2:16 PM EST up reply actions
But no fighting at all, much like the argument here on NBC, would lead to a ton of cheap shots. Fighting allows for two guys to settle their differences without trying to sneak something in behind a refs back.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
I can agree with not liking goons. However, I do think fighting has a place in the sport. In other contact sports like football or rugby, it’s a little harder to go head hunting, especially for the premier players on a team. However, in hockey it’s easier to do that, so teams have to have a measure to defend their stars. If a guy is really gunning for a Crosby, or an Ovechkin, there has to be a way to say, “Look, you’ve taken your shots, settle down.”
well the NFL officates better
if anyone goes for the heads they are penalized, fined or suspended
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
maybe i’m mistaken, but i thought that’s what happens in hockey, too…

i might have missed it, did anyone comment about the whole “passing up a penalty shot for a 3 on 5”?
No comments. We’re kinda in the habit now of dismissing anything Pierre Maguire says

Therien deserves a chance?
he took them to the finals for crying out loud
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Yeah, I’m not really worried about Therrien. I don’t think he’s the problem. I’m not sure what the problem is, and I don’t know if Therrien knows what it is either, but I think he needs to be focusing on figuring it out, not worrying whether he could lose his job.
Talk about the Rangers PP being awful. It’s a tradition in my house now, when we get a PP, we brace ourselves for the other team getting a goal.
Believe it or not the Pens aren’t far off from that either

So I have a question, who is it that yells “OFFSIDES. OFFSIDES”? Is it a coach, player, the linesman?
I'd give them an F in the A.
I can say that here, right?

Now they’re talking about the Rangers’ road trip and how it may have had an effect on them. Before the game the Rangers were “red hot” on the road. Fail.
