As typical with these 1:00 shindigs, this is your combination of a preview and an open thread.
The Florida Panthers are playing .500 hockey right now. Some would argue the Penguins are as well, so perhaps this game will pose as one of the bigger tests for both clubs.
The Panthers are getting by thanks to the goaltending of Thomas Vokoun and Craig Anderson. While Anderson's starts have been spotty as of late, he really stepped up for the Panthers when Vokoun was going throug a rough patch.
Stephen Weiss and David Booth lead the team in points, but it's not like they're tearing up the record books. Evidence to Florida's goaltending should be apparent when you glance at the top scorers. Weiss edges out the lead just barely with 6G, 15A for 21pts, while Booth sits comfortably behind as the team's top goal scorer with 15G, 5A for 20 pts.
This is the Panthers' first game of 2009, but they closed out the month of December with three straight losses (sound familiar?).
Craig Anderson is expected to get the nod today for the Panthers, while Marc-Andre Fleury should return to the cage for the Pens. Anderson, for all he's accomplished as a backup this season (8-4-4) is 1-2-1 in his last four stars. He came in as relief for Vokoun and gave up one goal on 14 shots on December 31 in the team's 4-2 loss to the Islanders.

Thanks for the video feed suggestions, Frank
Gonna have to struggle by at work through this one!
FYI: both Panthers goalies are deep in the dirt right now. They’re complaining about being on short leashes with DeBoer willing to yank ‘em at a moment’s notice. Kind of ugly.

Yeah from what I’ve seen the Panthers’ staff isn’t about ready to keep the goalie in net if he gets shelled a bit. I mean, Vokoun gave up what – three goals against the Islanders? I didn’t think that warranted a benching. I also remember Anderson taking a bit of a beatdown at some point, maybe four goals tops, and he was sent to the bench in favor of Vokoun. Seems a bit disheartening for a position that needs every bit of confidence.
No prob on the feed – I’m also stuff at work until 2. I was able to watch the last 1:00 game via that link, so definitely give it a shot.

Funny to read this...
…after seeing Therrien yanked Fleury after two goals?! Then ripped his goalies in the post-game?!
For the record, I couldn’t believe DeBoer yanked Vokoun in the Islanders game, either. I mean, so it was us poor Isles, but still…

NHL gamecenter is free today so as long as it is a game they would normally broadcast it will be airing there.
ah cool. i saw that, but also saw it said “tonight.” I guess I just figured it wouldn’t include 1:00 games. Nice heads up. Thansk Angela.

Oh snap
“Game not available”.
Hell of a way to promote your product. How many other Crosby appearances do you suppose the league doesn’t bother to push?
The search goes on…

See how Sid just laid out on the ice waiting for a call? That annoys me.

Does he score often? Because if not it doesn’t surprise me he’ll have a ridiculous game against the Pens. Seems to be a trend around the league

Eh, I’m ok. I actually just had a doc appt. the other day and he said my BP was ‘perfect.’ Then I told him to try again at 7:00 that night (when they lost to Bruins the first time) and we’ll compare.

My boy thinks I need a picture for my notes here. He thinks i’m a geek for spending so much time on the computer.
Horton never scores
Now I’m nervous

See? I told ya above – guys who never score do it all the time against the Pens

I used to know that off the top of my head, but I can honestly say I don’t think they have

Two goals and way too many close calls. I guess MT wasn’t about ready to let up more.

Oh man, Fleury got hit with a delay of game like that earlier in the season. Good to see a bounce go their way

I’d imagine a three goal lead is enough to give any fan confidence in their team
How does it feel? What’s it like?!

No comfort yet here
no easy way out. Still gonna be a challenge in sealing the deal

Honestly with the way the Pens’ offense has been lately, this should be enough for the Panthers.

I want to fast forward to third period, and if results are not what I want, then i’m demanding a refund of three hours of my life.
Michel Therrien is going to suit up to play goal in the third

I’m at a point where I just want them to stop the bleeding on the scoreboard and start the bleeding on the ice

well...
this has been refreshing to watch. It’s been a bad few games for the Cats and even though they made some mistake early on it’s good to see them spreading the scoring around. This does also put the two teams curiously close to each other in the standings, which I would have never expected
Too much talent
this is way too much talent to lose 4 games in a row. It doesn’t even look like they care. Gonchar won’t cure this team’s woes. They need a philosophical overhaul.
they we’re showing the highlights on the Florida channel here about how the Penguins won 10 of their last 12 last year after getting whooped by the Panthers 5-2.
I remember Malone’s charge to the net last season with like 12 seconds left. That was pretty incredible.

And yet, I just can’t turn this off and wait for next game. I want to bleed with every goal.

Ok, I’m going to get a pizza. Let that statement alone suffice as a game recap for now.
