Jordan Staal gets four more years, $16 million with Penguins

The new contract goes into effect at the start of the 2009-10 season and will run through 2012-13. Staal, 20, will play the remainder of this season under the terms of his entry-level contract.  He has played 204 games with the Penguins over three NHL seasons, scoring 52 goals and 39 assists for 91 points, along with 98 penalty minutes

Official team release

This should probably clear up any of those concerns from the Jordan Staal faithful who feared he might get the boot prior to the trade deadline.  I for one was pretty confident he would be offered in some sort of package deal, if not heads up for a goal-scoring winger for Sid.  I guess it all depends where you're coming from on this one.  Sean Leahy from GoingFiveHole knocked some sense into me.

"Keep in mind he's only 20 years old," Sean said.

That's a good point, one often buried beneath the likes of a sensational 21-year-old named Sidney Crosby and the international phenom Evgeni Malkin.

Mario

said after the cup run that the Pens young guns would be here “forever”. So, my guess is that super Mario had a little something to do with this. I’m bet the Pens are saying “He’s only 20” also.

Oh it’s definitely a valid point. The Pens can spend very little (in contract terms at least) on a guy who may play the best years of his career within the next four. And even then he’ll be 24/25 and on the market again. It’s a chance for the Pens to pick up another solid player who will grow with the team and an opportunity for Staal to raise his personal value and stats with a big-time club.

I like it. Staal’s current salary cap hit is about $2.2 million, so it’s “only” an increase of about $1.8 million a season. The Penguins can work with that.

Defensively repsonsible 20 year old centers that are 6’4 and 220 do not grow on trees. Staal has been better on faceoffs this season and has been more physical too.

I think in four years Staal will progress into quite the force as he continues to get more comfortable in the NHL.

Right on. If anything we can at least be happy in knowing he’s a guy who knows the system and won’t need to adjust to anything other than his own confidence. As that grows his game will improve and the Penguins can benefit in the end. I suppose we’ll see in time…

I hate to say it

The more I look at this deal, the more comfortable I am with it. I looked at all of Staal’s comparables—centers who are already under contract for between $3.5M and $4.5M next season—and Staal compares favorably with most of them. There are a few who are clearly outperforming him offensively, but only a few.

My first reaction, though, was, “$4M/year for a third-line center is way too much!”

Right, but he’s a third line center now. Obviously Crosby and Malkin will rotate the top two lines, but they’re also more versatile on the ice. Malkin can crash the net, shoot from the point or set up down low. That’s a multi-talented weapon, but the Pens are also paying him $9 mil a year to do it.

The Penguins have experimented with Staal on the wing before. I know it didn’t work out too well for him, but next season when the likes of Satan and Fedotenko are in question for re-signing, perhaps moving up Staal as a winger on one of the top lines can turn out to be a fairly affordable upgrade.

I would like to see Fedotenko resigned for maybe two more years.

Truth

Tonight, Staal will be on Sid’s wing. It’ll be interesting to say the least to see how Sid reacts the first time Jordan fails to pot one in a wide-open cage after a great setup.

Or maybe Sid will pass it to him and all in one motion kick Staal’s stick and score the goal for him. Anything they have to do to build up his confidence!

Heheh, something like that.

Boy, Mirtle really didn’t like this signing at all, did he?

I wouldn’t say he dislikes it, but he tends to have the more neutral stance, as expected by someone who runs a general hockey site. He seemed to think putting Staal on the wing might be the best option, so maybe he’ll sing a different tune by the end of the season.

Hopefully we all are.

Dupuis and Fedotenko

Are both scratches now. Wasn’t too optimistic to begin with, but the morning roster was just a tease.

Nice Job Shero

I must say Im very happy he’s managed to extend all the young guys, I had my doubts a few years ago….very nicely done

I wouldnt worry about Staals production, as everyone has said, hes only 20-he’s massive, tough and skilled, so we havent seen the real Jordan Staal yet.

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

And frankly, the more I think about it, the more I’m OK with thinking the contract was a waste in 2013. I mean that in a sense where if he doesn’t produce, it’s not like we spent upwards of 5, 6 or 7 million on him. This is a nice cheap deal for a potentially large turnout.

He'll be fine

Worst case scenario, he performs well but there is not real spot for him, and they trade him to address another need.

If you have three guys as good as Sid, Geno and Staal, you’ll find away to get them as much ice time as possible; its a good problem to have

This was a good job by shero though, locking him up early for cheaper than he mightve gotten on the open market…..too bad Hossa didnt do that, passes up 49M to be a FA again in the worst economy in decades….gotta love that

You know what? I have to admit I didn’t even think of that Hossa predicament. That really puts a smile on my face. No joke.

Hey, bad move on his part

I think he had like a 50M offer from Edmonton as well-so I guess the question would be was 7/49M not enough, or did he just not like playing in Pittsburgh?
