Sergei Gonchar injury update: Out 4-6 weeks with broken bone in wrist
A broken bone in the wrist sure beats a broken wrist. Either way, the Pens will still be without Sergei Gonchar for at least a month.
More updates hopefully on the way, including more specifics on which wrist and how the Pens hope to work around this injury. I'd imagine Alex Goligoski will take a jump to the top line and, as Hooks suggested in this morning's post, Martin Skoula will likely find a spot in one of the defensive pairings.
Rob Rossi also reports that Dan Bylsma will assign Brooks Orpik as the alternate captain in the interim.
Update after the jump: WBS beat writer JB addresses the Penguins' defensive options down on the farm.
Update [6pm]
Wilkes-Barre Scranton beat writer Jonathan Bombulie says there are a few options down on the farm:
I'd guess Nate Guenin, since he seemed to have the best training camp, just slightly ahead of Deryk Engelland. Ben Lovejoy is just getting back from a shoulder injury, but he could easily play four or five games here then join the NHL club for the western swing. If the decision were based simply on which D played the best in the first five WBS games this season, I'd probably pick Chris Lee

You know, here they (media, fans of other teams, analysts) go again with claiming the penguins are in bad shape now that Gonch is out. Yes, it sucks, but give me a break.

no kidding
Marc Savard’s broken foot now makes the Bruins 1,000x more screwed than the Pens right now.

I think the fish’s name should be Kunitz, because it hasn’t scored this season either. ;)

Ok, I have to admit, that was funny; I actually laughed out loud. Still, Kunitz did finish off the shootout against Carolina, surely he deserves a little respect for that even if it doesn’t count as a goal in the stats.

Well they certainly aren’t in better shape with Gonch out, are they?
I think they’ll still do OK without him but the power play will probably suffer quite a bit. The Pens really aren’t a team that lives or dies by the power play though so it doesn’t matter that much. At their best they usually operate at a 20% clip in the regular season. With Gonch gone I bet they’ll probably be converting at around 15-17%.

Personally I think it will allow for Gogo and The Tang to grow up even more. As of yet they have been a bit in Gonch’s shadow, and now they have a chance to shoulder the load so to speak and show that that they can handle it.
I’m looking forward to see how they do.

They’ll be fine. Letang is playing out of his mind (I would say he’s the best all around d-man the pens have. He plays physical, has his stick in good position, and i don’t think i need to comment on his offensive prowess) and gogo looks ten times more confident this year. It’ll be interesting to see how skoula performs, if he’s a little rusty might we see a Ben Lovejoy sighting?

Lovejoy is still out with a shoulder injury he suffered late in training camp (though hes getting close to returning to the lineup in Wilkes-Barre).

You wouldn’t happen to have a timeline for his return would you?
I only ask because if Skoula does indeed come back with a little rust and is never quite able to shake it off, would it be reasonable to perhaps see Lovejoy early in December right before Gonch gets back?

Lovejoy is actually on track to be back in the lineup this weekend.
Still a big jump from the AHL to the NHL, and Lovejoy didn’t exactly impress in camp, I don’t think he’s going to come in and be solid right off the bar.
I think Skoula will be serviceable. Certainly a better chance of playing better than Lovejoy, in my opinion.

Opportunity in Disguise Perhaps
The Chinese use the same word for crisis as they do for opportunity and I think Gonchar’s injury may in fact be a blessing in disguise. How is that possible you ask? Allow me to explain.
Gonchar is 35 years old in a final year of a contract when the NHL is on the verge of lowering it’s salary cap. The Pens have “heavy” money tied into their young core and will likely have to make some “adjustments” to the roster for next year and beyond. This is the time to figure out if Gogo and Letang can be trusted to be the 1-2 offensive defenseman combination that quality NHL teams have now.
If it can be shown that the Pens can survive and maintain without Gonchar that will do one of two things, either set the table for Gonchar to leave at season’s end without it being utterly devastating OR lower his asking price if he yearns to remain a Penguin, which I think he does.
If the Pens struggle without him it is going to be for what like 10 to 15 games? That isn’t so bad especially if you take into account that the Pens are off to a 8-1 start. If the Pens go 500 without Gonchar they will be 15 and 8 around the holiday season, there are many teams that would love to be in that situation.
There will come a day when the Pens have to learn to play without Gonchar for good, this will be a test to see if that time is now.

That’ a good account, and I agree.
As I said earlier, Goligoski and Letang are now a lot more prepared and ready for this than they were last season. That -and the fact that Gonchar is out 4-6 weeks not 4-6 months like last time - makes this one a lot more managable.

i completely agree
This is a great opportunity for Letang to step up and become our #1 D-man. Given that I was already not convinced that resigning Gonchar after this season was in the team’s best long-term interest, here’s hoping that Tanger makes the most of it.

Probably a two game lull..then back to normal...
I’m guessing the first two games will be a little shaky until the pairings get nailed back down and everyone gets comfortable. From there, Bylsma’s system will start cranking up again and we’ll never know the difference. I mentioned this in a previous post…monitor the SOG and the PP%. Those will give you a pretty good indication.
Also, with reference to last year, losing a d-man in combination with Therriens system was a losing proposition for the Pens. I think under Bylsma, we’ll have a much more favorable result. I’m also willing to bet our PK gets better. Sarge has made huge strides on the defensive end, make no mistake, but Skoula on the PK may be an upgrade.

Panthers and Devils on tap next. Having Gonchar at the top to crank a few shots would be nice against Florida but they give up a ton of shots anyway. The Devils might be another story since their defensive scheme will probably give the Pens some trouble. We’ll see though. Marty hasn’t exactly been at his best so far this season.

Its good that we get FL first then, to at least work out a few of the bugs before NJ.

Buffalo smacked them around pretty good tonight. 5-2. Clemmensen started but Vokoun still have up three of those five. I think FL will be looking to make a rebound. A win over the Pens may motivate them to amp it up.

I think he was joking…Really best to keep a defenseman in the leadership light. Orpik’s a solid choice, I think Eaton would have been too.

Eaton would be a good choice but most people dont notice when Eaton is on the ice i.e. he doesnt hit hard and isnt a goal scorer, he just goes to work everyday and plays solid D. On the other hand you know when Orpik is out there because bodies start flying into the boards.
Not a reason to give the man an A but it is certainly expected and deserved since hes been with the team since christmas` past.

Gonchar missing a significant amount of time, and being fresh for the playoffs worked last year
I’m sure there are less painful ways to keep fresh for the end of the season, but it’s not like his missing games dooms the Pens.
And unlike last year’s first 50 or so games, the Pens are likely far better equipped to handle losing his presence, both from a team make-up point of view (another year of experience for the young guys), as well as being better handle the aftermath of success. Not expecting Gonchar’s loss to really affect this team, especially if he’s just gone for the 4 week lower end of the estimate.

unless my math sucks
wouldnt this put both he and talbot coming back at the same time? im a little more interested to see what will happen when they both go back into the lineup who will get sent down/ traded? i think that with out gonch we may have a slight hickup but i still think that this team is going to keep working hard and getting as many wins as possible. injuries are a part of the season and no team will go unscathed.

True. If anything the quick 8-1 run gives the Pens a little room to, I don’t wanna say screw up, but maybe take a loss or two without it really having a big effect on the team. Either way I think the Pens’ chances of beating the Panthers Friday looks pretty good so we’ll do the cliche “one game at a time.”

Weeks, not months. Okay. We all know the rest of the team can deal with this—hopefully, they know it, too.
Congratulations to Orpik for that “A”, though I’m sure that’s not at all how he’d want it.

What Im interested in is how they put the D combos out. Do they put GoGo with Orpik keep Letang with Eaton and have Mckee with Skoula?

Gonchar out
my guess they will leave the GoGo/McKee and Eaton/Letang combinations together and just pair Skoula with Orpik. Why mess with the chemistry as the other 2 combinations are a combined +16 and +7 respectively. Skoula was a wise signing by Shero, that man is a genius. I’m sure they will recall a 7th D man as an insurance policy. I’m not concerned.

Let me just jump in here...
Hello, fellow hockey fans! I’ve been follwing along here for months now and this seemed as good a time as any to join in.
Personally, I think that, while the loss of Gonchar is a big hit, we can take it and come up standing. We were without him for most of last year and went on to win the cup and we have three key people that we didn’t have in Gonch’s absence last year. One is Bill Guerin. He’s an experienced veteran, a solid all around player, and a good leader and I think he can go a long way towards filling the experienced leadership gap left when sarge is out. The second is Dan Bylsma. No explanation needed here. The third is Lord Stanley. This is a team of winners. This is a team with confidence; you can see it in their game. Flower is on fire, Gologoski and Letang are looking sharp, our third line is making its presence felt, and even a bruiser like Rupp is chipping in on offence. I think a lot of that has to do with confidence as a team. The Pens know they can win and how to do it. The loss of any one player (with the possible exception of Fleury, although maybe even then) is not going to change that. This is bad, but we can take it in stride. The interesting part, as others have pointed out, will be seeing how Bylsma mixes up the D pairings.
Oh, and congrats to Orpik on getting the ‘A.’ If I’m not mistaken, he’s been a Penguin longer than anyone else on the team and nobody’s more willing to sacrifice the body for the team in a big hit or a shot block. He’s earned it.
by OlenWhitaker on Oct 21, 2009 10:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Welcome and thanks for coming out of the woodwork. Always like to see new names floating around.
I think a lot of Pens fans would agree with ya. It’s “only” a month and the Pens are rolling. We’ve been admiring the team’s depth over the past month or so and really that’s the key here. An injury to a guy like Gonch definitely has an impact but Letang and GoGo are ready to take the workload.
And yeah, guys like Rupp (who Hooks jokingly dubbed a “true goal scorer” the other day) will do their part along the way. The season’s only started.

Since Sarge is one of 3 offensive defensemen on the team who do you see as the next best offensive D-man in the system… Skoula, Lovejoy, Guenin, Engelland, Lee… all seem too defensive minded… how about Bortuzzo? do you figure he gets a shot?
