Hey folks. Mind some company?

Not that I have any say in the matter, but as far as I’m concerned you’re always welcome.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

It was mostly rhetorical. If Hooks or Frank were gonna give me the boot they would have banned me by now. But thanks for the welcome.

Oh, I know. But I realize I have a bit of a bad rep over at Japer’s that I wish I didn’t, so I’m making a conscious effort.

Got ya. I wore out my welcome at Defending Big D the first time I swung through. Still trying to live it down. The internet can be a real bitch.

And as far as Japers’, until you get banned you’re pretty open to rehab your image. Just bring your A game.

I did get tossed once, but I e-mailed JP an apology and he let me back on. I’ve remained pretty scarce since, though.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Got ya. There are a couple guys from around here that opened up their Japers’ experience with a dust up. One of them knew to let up and is pretty well accepted now, the other one is banned. If you bring a thoughtful viewpoint you’ll definitely be taken seriously, regardless of fandom.

That’s pretty good advice for anywhere. They are just pointless. Basically my only point in those arguments (at this site) is to defend ridiculous characterizations of AO. I honestly don’t care if you’d take another player over him; that’s a matter of taste. But give credit where it’s due.

I wondered about that from our discussion during the last game re: Ben, Heath, and Hines.

What’s your take on the game this Sunday? My guess is that they’ll try to stuff Purple Jesus and make Favre throw it all day.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that’s what they have to do. I think it’s going to be pretty high scoring considering the quality of the D’s. Ben is going to throw all over the MIN secondary and our D hasn’t been able to get the stops when they really need them so I think Favre is going to exploit that. I hope we can come out with a W, but it probably takes another 300+ yard game from Ben cuz we won’t run the ball.

by Rob Parker on Oct 23, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, the amateur statistician says Ben will get 300+ because he’s averaged more than that so far. The smart guy says that 6 games is too small of a sample to know for sure.

I also know that if Favre throws a ton of times, that’s when he starts throwing picks. I look forward to that with the secondary we’ve got this year.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I like our secondary (with Troy back, obviously). Ben has looked even better than his stats, IMO. But for a bunch of drops his numbers could be downright absurd right now. With MIN missing their top CB and BAL throwing all over them last week I think Ben is going to come out with another strong game.

Yeah, Flacco isn’t someone I’d call a top-flight QB, no matter how much the football media was fellating him last season for whatever reason.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you see how bad some of those bombs were? He underthrew wiiiiiiiiide open guys and they just adjusted and got the yards. BAL also seems to break a ton of long screen passes which pad his numbers.

People seem to forget too that he washed out of his DI-A school (Pitt) to go to Delaware. That doesn’t happen by accident.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah true. But he’s also a legit NFL QB whatever happened before. I don’t think he’s as good as the media does but I’d say he is better than 50% of NFL starters.

Time to let the team sit in the locker room for about 10 minutes. Let them sweat. Crack the door, stick his head in, and say, “Let’s go, ladies,” and walk away. Pull a (likely only anecdotal) Knute Rockne on them.

Hope they get the memo in the locker room that they are playing the equivalent of a college team.

That’s a bit harsh. FLA isn’t even the worst team in the league, much less a “college team.” There are several guys that will be playing Olympic hockey on the FLA roster, fwiw. Should the Pens be winning? Absolutely. But this isn’t the end of the world (or the season).

Well it didn’t break. He just dropped it. I’m with Booth on this one (though I’ll gladly take the PIM in fantasy).

When the sound of Booth smacking someone stick out of their hands & it echos through the building, that would be a slash.

by GhostWalker40 on Oct 23, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw the call. I’m just saying it’s BS that a NHL player can draw the call just by dropping their stick. When the stick breaks you are taken out of the play so it should be a PIM, but dropping your own stick is on you, especially during a legitimate puck battle.

by GhostWalker40 on Oct 23, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Ha. Ok bro. You’re clearly not objective about this. You honestly cannot be pulling the “dive” card. A horizontal stick to the back is going to be an X-check every time even if the guy doesn’t fight too hard to stay up.

by GhostWalker40 on Oct 23, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude. You really have no idea about me. I have Booth on my fantasy team, that’s why I wanted that goal, jack ass. I’m not Panthers fan (I guess clicking on my tag to see my profile is too hard; or even just reading up above when I out myself). My bias is out in the open on this site and I think I’m pretty objective about how I approach the games. (FWIW I also have MAF, Gogo, Gooch, and Crosby on fantasy teams… so I’m rooting for them as well… also up above in the thread.)

Yes. Embellishing a PIM when it really isn’t a PIM undermines the integrity of the game, no matter how it is carried out. Nope. Same game. Same feed even. Read carefully. I said “should” meaning it is a normative assessment. I understand the NHL does call the “stick slapped out of the hands” a slash, I just think it’s stupid. Bad incentives if you ask me. At some point players are going to just start dropping their sticks or intentionally holding them with a light grasp. That’s just another form of diving, IMO.

Michel Briere died in a car accident after his rookie season back in the early days of the Pens. Wow. Terrible play by Booth. No brain.

FLA is terrible at clearing the puck. It cost them last time.

How did that not end with a goal?!

Terrible offside call. Ridiculous, even.

This is just one of those nights. Bounces not going our way, ridiculous goalie, bad calls, and Malkin has missed the net probably 15 times tonight.

Plenty of time and BJ has been great.

Decent hit by Cooke, but it would have been nicer if he’d tried to play the puck instead. I guess that’s what you kind of get with him, though.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

YOU'RE KIDDING ME

Don’t do this to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Cari on Oct 23, 2009 9:53 PM EDT reply actions

This is a CF. That’s a hand pass but a hand pass isn’t reviewable. How do they handle this?

AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

DAMN! That was the right call, though.

by OlenWhitaker on Oct 23, 2009 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm, the overhead angle makes it look more like a goal.

by OlenWhitaker on Oct 23, 2009 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

If it’s a non-reviewable call what were they doing for all that time?

by Cari on Oct 23, 2009 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

Probably determining that it was indeed non-reviewable, haha.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The original call was a goal with the hand, which is reviewable. What happened was a hand pass into a goal, which is not. I’m not sure what the final resolution was other than they got it right.

No goal

That was probably the right call. Ouch.

by OlenWhitaker on Oct 23, 2009 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, the angle from behind the net was pretty clear, unfortunately.

by OlenWhitaker on Oct 23, 2009 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

by Cari on Oct 23, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

by GhostWalker40 on Oct 23, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Malkin, giving up another puck. He’s been pretty bad at giving the puck away this year for some reason

by GhostWalker40 on Oct 23, 2009 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

If it’s possible that the leading scorer on a team can be off his game, I think it’s true here.

by JustinM on Oct 23, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah his game is off, but I’ve never seen him give the puck up this much though

by GhostWalker40 on Oct 23, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

That was a nice effort by Letang and Staal.

by Cari on Oct 23, 2009 10:10 PM EDT reply actions

3 Stars: the goalies and the GWG, Sid if it goes to Shoot Out. (Actually probably Sid regardless but it should be the GWG)

Which is why it should be the GWG. But it’s in PIT and they choose the 3 stars so they are going to take Sid. He’s also been more noticeable all night than Reinprecht but that’s because he’s Sid.

Whatever happens

I am proud that the team got it together, came back, and put in a real effort. As someone who took a bad financial hit to buy tickets for a game this year, it makes me crazy when they phone it in at home — and they didn’t do that tonight… the first period was horrible but they earned the point they just got. So this was much better than the Phoneix game.

by Cari on Oct 23, 2009 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

They really fought back in the third.

by OlenWhitaker on Oct 23, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

….didn’t throw hats on the ice, get embarrassed by throwing hats on the ice for a non-hat trick, then try to cover it up by calling it a “Sidney Crosby Hat Trick – PP, SH, and SO!!!” Put it in Wikipedia!!!

AWESOME game.

I’m so happy for Johnson. It’s not easy to be a backup, and he did an amazing job. Now he gets to taste a W until his next start.

And how much do you love Sidney Crosby tonight!

He’s well on his way to a 40 goal season. That would be his first. He’s getting much better at turning chances into goals. something appears to have clicked in his head, or they are slightly changing his role to get him better chances.

Either way, I love him and Malkin, they keep getting better at being on the ice together. that PK line is sick, with those two out there it kills the other teams PP and puts them on their heels.

And you could tell even behind that Led Zep mask that Johnson was dying of thrilled. Awesome!
