Late-day link roundup: Win NHL2k10 for Wii, A curse is lifted, what team do you hate the most?

Hey there buddies.  Here we are entering week two of the season.  After the first two games the Pens are 2-0 and now have a little time to regroup before tackling another double header Wednesday/Thursday.  4-0 by Friday morning?  Don't rule it out.

  • Friend of Pensburgh Damian has a great giveaway over at Pens Universe - NHL2k10 for Wii.  You've probably seen the commercials by now with those ladies cooking up lemon bars and basically acting out as obsessed hockey fans.  To enter all you have to do is share a Mellon Arena memory.  Simple as that.  Do it up.  [Pens Universe]
  • Nick over at PSAMP always has some great posts.  I mean, the dude posts up pictures of mini ponies.  How is that not funny?  His recent post about a friend trying to lift a curse definitely falls into the hilarious category.  Long story short - the Pens never win when his friend goes to games.  They tested that out again this weekend against the Islanders after visiting some sort of paranormal shop.  [PSAMP]
  • Who's your most hated rival?  I could likely guess, but I won't sway your answers.  (Thursday, Thursday, Thursday)  [Penguin Poop]
  • Why this week didn't suck.  A week in pictures, commentary and countdown form.  [Puck Huffers]
  • And I'd also like to give a shout out to Pensburgh's own GhostWalker40.  Not only does this guy upload Penguins videos to YouTube but he also shares them with us in the fanshots section.  If you missed the game, want to see highlights or watch a fight again, you know where to go.  So thanks GW40.  You're the man.  [Fanshots]

Frank beat me to the punch with some links, but here's some places that caught my attention... -- Hooks

  • Happy birthday, Mario.  [Pens Universe]
  • Ben Hanowski, the Pens 3rd round pick in 2009, got off to a fast start with 2 goals in his first collegiate game [Faceoff Factor]
  • Matt Cooke and the Pens 3rd line are playing well and looking to finish on the chances they're creating [Penguins.com]
  • The Old 2-9'ers memories of Mellon Arena [Empty Netters]
  • Sticking with Mellon, here's a cool article about how it was in the beginning of her 50 year run. [Post-Gazette]
  • Finally, the arena itself actually gave a monologue to the Tribune-Review [Trib]
  • If you're having problems with FSN Pittsburgh broadcasts, find out how you may be able to help get more hockey [The Pensblog]
  • Rookie forwards Keven Veilleux and Eric Tangradi earned high marks in their debuts on Friday night, a win for Wilkes-Barre [Penguins Insider]
  • How would you like to be on a six hour long conference call debating the firing of a union leader?  Yuck.  [TSN]
  • Swell guy that he is, Greg Wyshynski is auctioning a trip to the Hockey HOF with Glenn Anderson away for charity....And the charity isn't even his drinking fund! [Puck Daddy]
  • Flyers fans get stabby. [700 level]
  • JP questions if Alex Ovechkin can get 50 goals in 50 games, fails to mention Sidney Crosby is on pace as well :)  [Japers Rink]

What would you even get Mario Lemieux for his birthday? He’s got practically everything.

I’d give him the copy of the letter i sent him when I was 12 years old (that I never got a response to). I don’t hold it against him or anything, I just wanted him to have it.

I think I have to try and find that again and maybe, maybe MAYBE consider scanning it and sharing it with the world – or just the Pensburgh readers.

I wouldn’t want to be on a six-hour conference call for any reason at all, let alone the firing of a union leader.

Happy birthday, Mario! He’s packed so much into 44 years.

Can’t believe that fight among Flyers fans. I swear, I will never go to Philadelphia to watch a game. Can’t wait for Thursday, though.

I love Enchantment! (I’ve never gone for the Pens, though. For them, I eat a mini black-and-white cookie or something else black and white before the game.) The post and the video at PSAMP were absolutely hilarious! I’m amazed by all the fun and creative blogging that the Pens inspire.

Seconding the shoutout to GhostWalker40 for all those awesome videos.

Six-hour conference call!?!? Not without alcohol, I couldn’t.

New to Pensburgh...

and new to hockey in general. I’ve only been to the Igloo once, back in 2005 to see Pens-Caps, Sid v. Ovechkin 1. Incredible game. If my memory serves me correctly, they each scored a goal, and Sid added an assist, in a 5-4 Pens win.
Being from Northern CA, I’m used to old sports venues (Arco Arena, Oakland Coliseum, Candlestick), but the Igloo didn’t seem too bad comparatively. We were sitting about 5-6 rows behind one of the goals, I ran into Jeff Reed, and I got drunk off Yeungling and IC Light. The player intros were sick, and the crowd was fired up.
It’s the only hockey game I’ve been to, but if the Pens travel to San Jose this year, I’m goin to try and find my way down there.

Yay, another newbie! I got my Nuyorussian beloved into NASCAR, and got guilted into watching hockey in return. (My signature reflects a part of my education in hockey that none of our friends will ever let me forget, ever.) Beloved is a Red Wings fan, but the Penguins were the team that made me actually want to watch hockey as, like, my idea. Welcome to the blog. I’ve found over the past few years that hockey, especially Pens hockey, is incredibly addictive.

Happy Birthday Mario!

As for the teams I hate the most, it’s a tie between Washington, Philly and Detroit. But apologies to the caps, because it’s only because of Alex Oi can’t play defense.

As for the teams that I hate the most, it obviously comes down to the Flyers and the Capitals.

As a Pittsburgher living in Northern Va, my hatred of the Caps has grown ten-fold. Whether it’s Uncle Ted trying his hardest to keep me from attending the monster truck rallies that he hosts (I always find tickets so it doesn’t matter), or having to see if anyone has something other than a red #8 Ovechkin jersey, they drive me nuts.

I don’t jump on Caps fans as being bandwagon jumpers, because every team in the league has bandwagon fans. That’s how fringe sports work. I love hockey, and I love seeing new fans attracted to the game.

No matter how much Caps fans annoy me, I just refer to them as “little brothers.” It gets under their skin. No matter how much they annoy big brother, they will always be little brother, and big brother will come out on top.

The Flyers on the other hand…well…what can you say about the Flyers. Between their conspiracy-theory-loving fans who think that everyone in the NHL is against them and their meat-headed fans and players, there is no other team I hate more than them.

Agree with it all, Link. We’re in the same situation I think

Maybe I’m old school, but my most hated teams are the Flyers, Devils, and Rangers. My first game at the igloo was against the Devils when I was 7 or 8 I think. That night was the night I first ventured into the art of talking shit and heckling the opposition. I’ll never forget my uncle encouraging me to keep making fun of the Devils Christmas tree color scheme (not very creative, I know. But, give me a break. I was very young.).

by PensFan024 on Oct 6, 2009 9:21 AM EDT reply actions

I certainly hate the Rangers. They are either 3a (w/ the Red Wings being 3b), or they are #4 behind the Red Wings.

Unfortunately…or fortunately….the Rangers have been irrelevant for over 10 years. They only thing have been relevant to was the free agent market.

I hate the Devils because they ruined hockey, but I never have developed a fierce hatred of them. Maybe it’s because they have never had hateable players or fans, but they will never match the Flyers, Caps, Wings, and Rangers.

by Link_Gaetz on Oct 6, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

And yet the Rangers fans market themselves as being the only fans with three home arenas. I’ve been to a Devils/Rangers game and they really are insane. If you had your eyes closed and heard a surge from the crowd, it’d be hard to pin point which team scored. Of course if the Devils score it’s a goal horn, followed by a “Hey, you suck” chant, but you get the picture.
