Anaheim Ducks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins [Open Thread]
Anaheim Ducks at Pittsburgh Penguins, Nov 16, 2009 7:30 PM EST
I don't know about you, but I'm still jazzed about last game. Something about having Malkin back.
As was the case with the past game against the Ducks on the road, I'm expecting tons of fun comments from this one. Comments such as their best player has been scratched tonight for excessive cake consumption.
I'm hoping for more of what we saw against the Bruins, in terms of Geno being a spark plug, and am going out on a limb saying he'll net the first goal tonight.
Cheers, and Let's Go Pens.

I'm still fired up about the last game as well.
For some reason, an author on Puck Daddy found it necessary to poop on the Pens’ parade, though. Still, a win is a win, especially in the NHL, and hopefully we’ll have another one to talk about tonight.
Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89
Yeah I thought that guy was supposed to be a Penguins fan too. He really crapped on that win, even called it “hollow”. I don’t think it was very true (or nice).

For the Pens I’d have thought that most regular season wins were “hollow” but as far as regular season wins go I don’t see how you shouldn’t feel pretty good about that comeback.

Comeback, plus the essence of a last second goal and it broke a four game losing streak. Not hollow.

They looked dead in the water after giving up that lead, then they pull the goalie and can’t even clear the zone. One break and they fly up ice and tie it. I don’t see why you’d knock that. My loyalties are clear but I thought that was pretty exciting hockey.

Both teams we’re sloppy at times, sharp at times. I think the Ducks are looking bad more than the Pens are looking good. Still, not a bad period. I’ll definitely take that PP goal and from Guerin no less.
we should’ve buried them with at least one more goal without even giving up that one against… that was a bad period from Anaheim (except for 1-2 shifts of the Getzlaf line)

He’s got a famous last name that makes him recognizable.
He’s a little guy who works hard, an easy type of player to notice and cheer for.

Do Caps fans genuinely care about the fate of the AHL affiliate? I get that impression a lot at Japer’s and I was curious if it’s widespread.
I don’t know if I’m peculiar in Pens’ fandom or not, but I generally see the Baby Pens as nothing more than a farm team. If they don’t succeed, I don’t really care so long as they produce the occasional young guy we can use in the NHL.
If I can answer, I’d say the hardcore fan does care a lot about the Hershey Bears. But they are historically a very strong minor league team (I think they have like 10 or 11 Calder Cups) and a point of pride. If they were the Pens team I’m sure we’d care a little more.
The average fan probably couldn’t tell you where the minor league affiliate plays. (But I’m sure that goes for a large portion of a lot of fan bases)

The Caps fans at Japers’ Rink are definitely into the Bears. Most fans aren’t but that’s probably true for most sports teams. Especially recently the Caps have had a lot of success developing players in the AHL so they really view it as important. I’m not sure how the Pens do it but the Caps (and several other teams) run the same systems in the NHL and AHL so the players can step right up. I feel like most of the Pens impact players didn’t go through WBS. A few of them did but the big names didn’t. Green, Schultz, Laich, Fehr, Flash, Gordon, Steckel all won Calder Cups. Before Varlamov came up to the Caps he was in HER. Neuvirth, Carlson, Alzner, Perreault, Osala, Bouchard (our next crop of prospects) all won a Calder Cup. The connection really wasn’t the same when they were with Portland (though I was younger and the internet didn’t allow the same access to information so maybe it was with the teams).

I feel like most of the Pens impact players didn’t go through WBS. A few of them did but the big names didn’t.
The Pens biggest names (Crosby, Malkin, Staal) didn’t, but neither did your Ovechkin, Backstrom or Semin. Big name forwards just don’t play in the minor leagues.
Orpik, Talbot, Kennedy, Letang, Goligoski and Fleury all got important time in WB/S. In the next year or two the young core of guys like Jeffrey, Tangradi and Caputi will likely be making the jump.
I’d agree the Caps have kept most of their core together (whereas Pittsburgh has traded/waived guys like Armstrong, Christensen, Carcillo, Welch, Bissonnette) but a lot of Pittsburgh’s core has spent time together in WB/S.

I didn’t think MAF saw more than half a season there. The reason AO, Semin, Backstrom, and Malkin didn’t go to the AHL is because they are European. But you’re right, they probably wouldn’t have gone anyway (though the Caps tried to send Semin and Malkin and Backstrom played one pro year after being drafted before coming to the NHL.).

Anyone here in fantasy league A need a D-man?
I need to move one, with Souray coming back.

I read that lady’s story. She was in real bad shape, but pulled through. Good for her, very nice to see Talbot get out there and say hello, I’m sure it meant the world to her.

Parros-Mikkelson-Brown vs. Crosby-Malkin-Fedotenko?
Odd.

Odd but we’ll take it any day of the week, huh?

Eh, they actually got the better of that shift. Parros almost set up Brown for a goal – good save by MAF.

Yeah I thought of that fact as soon as I hit post.
Gotta like those odds, even if the Anaheim players got the better of it that time.

I like how Nate Guenin has held the blueline and been forceful about playing the puck.
You’d never guess it’s his first NHL game of the year, he looks very confident.

funny part is he ain’t got a point down in WBS … 15 games or so… go figure?
You have to see it for yourself...
Correct, zero points this year. They say he’s a Jay McKee type player that blocks a lot of shots and plays responsible.
But he looks pretty comfortable and reasonably decent with the puck on his stick tonight.

Godard takes a minor penalty. That’s probably his last shift of the game, thanks for coming out Eric.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t feel as impressed by Scott Niedermayer this year as much as the past. I think time is catching up to him a little bit.

I think you’re right. Last year he wasn’t as impressive, and this year he’s not. He’s obviously still a great skater but I don’t see him creating nearly as much. It’s like that top gear isn’t there.

It feels like our team is back… for the first time in a while, I’ve been forgetting we have SEVEN players out with injuries.
Yeah, we look like the Penguins again even if most of our defense is WBS.

Yeah he’s a bad tackler but what about the other ten guys. Cribbs I can understand but that guy yesterday had no business doing that.

Well, there was a block in the back on the return yesterday. That notwithstanding, I don’t mind if Reed misses a tackle. The problem is when he just runs by the guy like the wind will knock him down.
I didn’t see the block in the back. I actually suspected something had to have happened after CIN took penalties on each of the next two returns, but never got confirmation. That guy didn’t look that good. Either way, 3 in 4 weeks has to change.

I think they definitely need to get rid of Giguere, if possible (no trade clause and hefty contract) might make it hard.

I did not realize he had a NMC. Terrible. Someone was advocating Giggy to TOR not too long ago. He’d probably do that. I’m sure they’re tempted to ride it out because of the veteran crew they’ve got but they look terrible so far this year.

Burke gave it to him too. Jiggy has a kid with a heart condition which they said was the only reason they did it (wanted to keep the kid near good hospitals in Southern California).

But hasn’t the kid been going to a doctor in Quebec lately? Isn’t that why he was there for a lot of last season or was that his dad?

Not sure, I think I heard something about his dad passing away recently (and Quebec would make sense), but that might have been longer than I think.
I’m almost certain at the time the extension was signed, Jiggy cited treatment in Cali an not wanting to uproot him as reason.
