DUCKS BLOG: ANAHEIM CALLING

I don't know about you, but I'm still jazzed about last game. Something about having Malkin back.

As was the case with the past game against the Ducks on the road, I'm expecting tons of fun comments from this one. Comments such as their best player has been scratched tonight for excessive cake consumption.

I'm hoping for more of what we saw against the Bruins, in terms of Geno being a spark plug, and am going out on a limb saying he'll net the first goal tonight.

Cheers, and Let's Go Pens.

I'm still fired up about the last game as well.

For some reason, an author on Puck Daddy found it necessary to poop on the Pens’ parade, though. Still, a win is a win, especially in the NHL, and hopefully we’ll have another one to talk about tonight.

Yeah I thought that guy was supposed to be a Penguins fan too. He really crapped on that win, even called it “hollow”. I don’t think it was very true (or nice).

For the Pens I’d have thought that most regular season wins were “hollow” but as far as regular season wins go I don’t see how you shouldn’t feel pretty good about that comeback.

Comeback, plus the essence of a last second goal and it broke a four game losing streak. Not hollow.

They looked dead in the water after giving up that lead, then they pull the goalie and can’t even clear the zone. One break and they fly up ice and tie it. I don’t see why you’d knock that. My loyalties are clear but I thought that was pretty exciting hockey.

Both teams we’re sloppy at times, sharp at times. I think the Ducks are looking bad more than the Pens are looking good. Still, not a bad period. I’ll definitely take that PP goal and from Guerin no less.

we should’ve buried them with at least one more goal without even giving up that one against… that was a bad period from Anaheim (except for 1-2 shifts of the Getzlaf line)

Do Caps fans genuinely care about the fate of the AHL affiliate? I get that impression a lot at Japer’s and I was curious if it’s widespread.

I don’t know if I’m peculiar in Pens’ fandom or not, but I generally see the Baby Pens as nothing more than a farm team. If they don’t succeed, I don’t really care so long as they produce the occasional young guy we can use in the NHL.

by JustinM on Nov 16, 2009 8:53 PM EST up reply actions

If I can answer, I’d say the hardcore fan does care a lot about the Hershey Bears. But they are historically a very strong minor league team (I think they have like 10 or 11 Calder Cups) and a point of pride. If they were the Pens team I’m sure we’d care a little more.

The average fan probably couldn’t tell you where the minor league affiliate plays. (But I’m sure that goes for a large portion of a lot of fan bases)

Got it. I guess considering how often our AHL affiliate has changed (Cleveland, Milwaukee, WBS, etc.), we don’t have that history to look upon.

by JustinM on Nov 16, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

The Caps fans at Japers’ Rink are definitely into the Bears. Most fans aren’t but that’s probably true for most sports teams. Especially recently the Caps have had a lot of success developing players in the AHL so they really view it as important. I’m not sure how the Pens do it but the Caps (and several other teams) run the same systems in the NHL and AHL so the players can step right up. I feel like most of the Pens impact players didn’t go through WBS. A few of them did but the big names didn’t. Green, Schultz, Laich, Fehr, Flash, Gordon, Steckel all won Calder Cups. Before Varlamov came up to the Caps he was in HER. Neuvirth, Carlson, Alzner, Perreault, Osala, Bouchard (our next crop of prospects) all won a Calder Cup. The connection really wasn’t the same when they were with Portland (though I was younger and the internet didn’t allow the same access to information so maybe it was with the teams).

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

I feel like most of the Pens impact players didn’t go through WBS. A few of them did but the big names didn’t.

The Pens biggest names (Crosby, Malkin, Staal) didn’t, but neither did your Ovechkin, Backstrom or Semin. Big name forwards just don’t play in the minor leagues.

Orpik, Talbot, Kennedy, Letang, Goligoski and Fleury all got important time in WB/S. In the next year or two the young core of guys like Jeffrey, Tangradi and Caputi will likely be making the jump.

I’d agree the Caps have kept most of their core together (whereas Pittsburgh has traded/waived guys like Armstrong, Christensen, Carcillo, Welch, Bissonnette) but a lot of Pittsburgh’s core has spent time together in WB/S.

I don’t see Jeffrey ever being a core guy. I know he’s still young, but I expect him to be a Craig Adams type, a replacement-level player who’ll probably get shuttled around the league for a while and then disappear.

by JustinM on Nov 16, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t think MAF saw more than half a season there. The reason AO, Semin, Backstrom, and Malkin didn’t go to the AHL is because they are European. But you’re right, they probably wouldn’t have gone anyway (though the Caps tried to send Semin and Malkin and Backstrom played one pro year after being drafted before coming to the NHL.).

Well, there was a block in the back on the return yesterday. That notwithstanding, I don’t mind if Reed misses a tackle. The problem is when he just runs by the guy like the wind will knock him down.

by JustinM on Nov 16, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t see the block in the back. I actually suspected something had to have happened after CIN took penalties on each of the next two returns, but never got confirmation. That guy didn’t look that good. Either way, 3 in 4 weeks has to change.
