Sports Illustrated nominates Sidney Crosby as Sportsman of the Year
Sid's going up against the likes of college football QB Tim Tebow, golfer Tom Watson, NASCAR's Jimmie Johnson, WNBA's Diana Taurasi and former Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy. Personally I'm a bit surprised Geno wasn't nominated.

A nominee I really love and a nominee I really hate. Probably as well that we can’t vote, or I’d be giving myself carpal tunnel.
How weird (but cool) to read the article about him from when he was 16!

If you say icing, the staff at SI thinks you’ve brought cake. You say Geno, they think cheesesteaks. I’m always fond of hockey players winning multi-sport awards.. shame it never happens.
In fact, that list is pretty much a step-by-step review of sports figures I have sub-neutral opinions of (except for Diana, for whom I must claim I am quite ambivalent.)

Can’t we just be happy that one of our players is being recognized by a magazine in which hockey isn’t, by any means, it’s prevalent sport? Who really cares if it was Sid or Geno? Both are amazing.
Geno really had a breakout year and proved that the season prior wasn’t just a fluke (not that we ever thought it was, but I’m sure others had doubts). And Sid went through a pretty amazing transformation the began when Dan Bylsma came on board. When HCDB changed the teams attitude, Captain Crosby was the first to buy in. He started joking on the bench and loosed up, but most of all, he was doing whatever it took to win. Paul Steigerwald said that Sid would much rather play the half-wall on the PP. Instead of Sid himself expressing his displeasure, he found a way to thrive (scoring goals) when he was moved down low.
I truly think both are good candidates, but I also believe that Ovechkin would be nominated before Geno would. Now, I don’t believe that it should be that way (Sid and Geno are 1A and 1B in my opinion) but with the media, that’s the way it is. To be honest, Sid would have a better chance than Geno and probably a better chance than Ovi to be named Sportsman of the Year just because he is the most recognizable to non-hockey fans, so it’s probably better that he got nominated. I’m just happy Ovi didn’t get nominated…ugghh…and that Sid has the opportunity to be on the cover of one of the most recognizable sports magazines.
