In Defense of Flower

Over the past couple of months I have heard some persistent criticism from certain members of the Pensburgh community to the effect that Fleury is no good in goal.  I feel the desire to address this as I was once a Flower doubter myself and remained so up until around 19:58.8 of the third period of game seven of last year's cup final.  While I did not reverse my position based solely on that one save, it does typify the kind of play that changed my mind.  Allow me to elaborate.

I am the first to admit that Fleury can be maddeningly inconsistent at times.  He will make a seemingly impossible save one minute and let in a soft one the next.  A look at his stats doesn't seem to reveal anything all that impressive either.  His save percentage last year was a fairly average .912 with a 2.67 GAA which was also quite average.  These stats remained virtually unchanged through the post-season.  This year looks worse with a .904 Sv%, however I would credit that to the many golden chances we keep giving our opponents through defensive lapses.  Flower is facing way more breakaways, two-on-ones, and three-on-twos than he should be.  That, I think, has a lot to do with the multitude of injuries and the endlessly changing defensive corps that has resulted.  The many unfamiliar defensemen he's playing with certainally won't help MAF either.  And, it's worth noting, even this year, his numbers are substantially better than those of Tom Barrasso the two previous years we went all the way.  Still, I admit that he's putting up numbers that are no better than average for the league.

Why, then, am I advocating for him as our franchise netminder?  That's harder to quantify.  Resilience has something to do with it.  Flower was like a sieve in game 5 of the cup final, yet he came back as if nothing happened and allowed only one goal in each of the last two games.  That is not the only time I've seen him come back from a bad performance either.  He never (or at least very rarely) seems to carry a bad day into a bad series.  His slumps tend to be one-and-done and that is an important trait.  Listening to the team talk about him, I also get the idea that they really like Flower and want to play well for his sake which is worth something as well. He also seems to thrive in high-pressure situations.  When not just the game but the whole season is on the line, he keeps his cool and comes up solid.  The end of game seven was a perfect example.  If he had given up on the play he wouldn't have made it over in time; if he had panicked, he would have overshot his mark.  Instead he kept his head, timed his movement perfectly and made what I thought a half-second before to be an impossible save.  He showed that same sort of poise in the series against Washington.  He let in some bad ones occasionally, but when he had to make a save, he did.

In short, he's a winner.  Which brings me to one very quantifiable factor he has on his side--the one stat he owned last year: only one goalie each year can post sixteen wins in the post-season, and last year that goalie was Marc-Andre Fleury.  The bottom line is that we win with Fleury in the pipes.  As far as I'm concerned, Tim Thomas can keep his Vezina; Flower brought home the ultimate prize.

I agree, remember that before the injury train hit the Pens his numbers were .920 and 2.30 or something, he was stellar in the beginning of the year and i’m sure after most players are back we will see more of that Fleury.

Good memory. I checked NHL.com and crunched the numbers: he was 9-1 / 2.10 GAA / .920 Sv% in his first ten starts this season.

Im a Fleury supporter and always have been. Like youve posted, he doesnt have the best stats but the kid is a winner, plain and simple, he single handedly kept us in the playoffs quite a few times last year. Sure he lets in a few bad ones, but I ask, what goaltender doesnt? Lundqvist hasnt exactly played stellar this season, but you dont see New Yorkers calling for his head. I actually thought after the SCF last year that the question of whether MAF is our franchise netminder would cease but I guess its something he`ll always have to deal with.

Fleury

He’s a hot and cold goalie, he plays average a lot of the time. Fortunately that time doesn’t seem to involve the Playoffs, when he is one of the best goalies in the league. Brodeur may do it all season, but that’s a rare quality, I’ll take Fleury over Brodeur anyway, I think Fleury in the playoffs is better.

A hot goalie can carry a team to the finals, and Fleury seems to be hot every year. Even if he eventually has a bad postseason, I’ll continue to be a huge Fleury fan.

I had my doubts through the 06-07 season when the Pens lost to the Sens in the first round. Even with the complete turnaround and playoff berth, I wasn’t convinced Fleury was a big-time goaltender. I know, he had 40 wins that year. But like any cynic I wasn’t entirely convinced. In 07-08, even during just the first few months of the regular season (well, before he hurt his ankle), I started seeing the real competitor emerge. Then he went down for a bit, Conklin stepped in and I was pretty sure he’d have to fight for the first spot again. Nope. He came back from that ankle injury better than he ever was. And even though the Pens lost in the Finals, Fleury made a HUGE statement in a lot of those games, especially G5 when Sykora netted the game winner in OT. (That was G5, right?)

Then came last season. It’s hard to overly critique a goaltender’s season when the entire year came down to one huge save at the right time to win the Cup. You can’t ride him too hard for anything at that point – hindsight. But after giving up those 5 goals in game 5, I thought otherwise. Until he had two consecutive one-goal games.

This season the Pens tied a franchise record: 17 wins out of the first 25 games. Aside from a ridiculous amount of injuries and the team’s effort to deal with said injuries, how can anyone say this team and goaltender is struggling? MAF lets in weird goals. It’s his unfortunate downside. He’s too risky playing the puck outside the net and sometimes gets some really bad (see also: weird) bounces. Remember when he sat on the puck in 07-08 Finals and it literally popped up from under him and into the net? That’s the sort of thing that happens to this kid. But really, I can’t see how you fault him while still backstopping a team that’s first in the Atlantic, tied for first in the conference and only two or three points off from first in the league.

And don’t forget he just turned 25, is getting better each season and is money where it counts (playoffs). This Pens team with this coach will make the playoffs, I don’t give a fuck about the Presidents trophy. (Let the Sharks have it, they won’t get out of the first round anyhow) Then when we’re in the playoffs MAF will win games for us when alot is on the line (Game 2+4 against the Cryers, game 7 save against the Craps and AO, Game 6+7 against the Whiny Wings to name just the most obvious ones)

In the five games you mentioned, Fleury posted a .940 Sv% and a 1.40 GAA and, of course, won all five. That’s the kind of performance he turns in when the chips are really down.

If we accept that every goalie let’s some weak & weird goals from time to time the only thing that I hope MAF can improve on is his puck handling…

I believe he’s making some progress in that regard, but he gives us a scare a bit too often when he leaves the net…

Other than that I’ve absolutely no doubts about his game… and his positive attitude is unmatched

You have to see it for yourself...

Was it so long ago that we forgot there was a time that MAF didnt even come out of his crease to play the puck and leave his defenseman hanging out to dry in the corners? I believe since Conklin was here Fleury has improved dramatically in stick handling, sure he needs more polish back there but hell fin.

I hate to show my man love for flower, but whenever he makes a huge save and they zoom in on his face and he has a smile ear to ear, you can just tell he has fun out there, which is in part why I think hes good.

And as much fun as he’s showing, that’s also his competitive side as well. I can’t confirm it, but I’m sure somewhere on MAF’s computer is a folder labeled “My highlights” (or however you say it in French). It’s in the folder right next to the one labeled “Cartoons.”

I will take the Flower over any goalie in the NHL.

He is a primetime player. I don’t care about stats. Obviously you can look at the playoffs the last two years and its easy to see why I think he is the best…he has the most playoff wins over the last two years!

The other telling stat if you want regular season proof is that he is undefeated when he has to make a save in a shootout. That is stepping up and taking the bull by the horns.

Flower, you are the man! Keep it up!

What's up Pens fans?

First post here, and I’m excited to continue to participate in this blog. I played basketball growing up, and was never that into hockey despite growing up in Minnesota. I was pretty enamored and amazed by Crosby when he came into the league, so that and a new friendship helped me become a die hard Pens fan. My friend is a die hard Caps fan and even worse he is OBSESSED with Ovie haha. It certainly does make for some interesting debates between the two of us though.

Haha sorry for the little introduction, but I just felt like sharing.

I think Flower is a really good goalie. He is a bit confusing too me though. He seems to save all the difficult ones and then lets some easy ones in from time to time. I also find myself nervous everytime he leaves the net, but all in all he seems to continue to improve and is one of the better goalies in the NHL.

Welcome! more members is always nice to see. And that is basicly my opinion of MAF aswel, he is weeding out the gaffes while puckhandling this season though imo, (The Avs game notwithstanding), he’s just turned 25, he’s young and will be an elite netminder for years to come imo.

He reminds me of Tommy B.

Flower gives up bad goals all the time, like Barraso (See Fitzgerald, Tom), but when the chips are on the line they both win. I don’t need Luongo, Thomas, Miller, King Henrik, etc. The guys who are supposedly the best in the game (excepting Brodeur, of course) all have one thing in common. They have ZERO Stanley Cups. Tommy’s got two. Flower got his first of many. I don’t think Flower would trade Vezina trophies for the chance to lift the Cup!

Why do you think the Wings always went back to Osgood? … HE WINS.

Who cares about soft goals that do not mean anything in the long run? … Someone who did not win the Stanley Cup!

Who is the ONLY goaltender that I want the Penguis to go into battle with?…MAF!!!
