Shooting down the latest rumor that doesn't make sense: why the Pens won't be trading Sergei Gonchar to Phoenix. Really rumor mongers, Phoenix taking on the salary? And the Pens trading such a key guy? At least make the rumors make a little sense. [Faceoff Factor]
Deadspin picks up on the almost certainly false rumors swirling around the Flyers. [Deadspin]
Flyers punching bag tough guy Riley Cote weighed in on facebook (before removing it): "i feel the need to address a terrible rumor about 2 of my teamates [sic] hartnell and carter. 100% not true. do not believe what you hear. nothing but pollution. i got both there [sic] backs. now let’s put a beating on the pens!!" ahh, I cut him a break on that. Facebook isn’t exactly the same forum as a classroom.

My aunt taught Cote grade twelve english while he was playing for the Raiders in Prince Albert. I’m sure she would be disappointed to know that he can’t spell “there” right…

The hype the creator of the Flyers rumor is getting will surely only encourage him to keep creating them. This has a good chance of being very entertaining.
Team USA is better for those picks. Happy to see Guerin tough it out the other night because that goal was big.
And yes, fear Ryan Miller. In that same breath, fear Malkin’s Stoli Stash in Pensburgh League A.

It all fits. Jeff Carter on the trading block. Division in the flyers locker room. Rod Brind’amour and Eric Lindros once again

I couldn’t resist that mean little laugh at Riley Cote’s Facebook post. At least, unlike the Gonchar-to-Phoenix rumor, the rumor Cote refers to does make a lick of sense.
Goooo Team USA!!!!!

Maybe Im a bad Pens fan
but I think Id put up with a Ryan Miller shutout if it meant we could win a medal in Vancouver. Preferably a golden one.
It’s tough to choose between the team and our country, isn’t it? ;-) I gotta say I want to see Crosby v. Malkin, too.

Don’t get too excited. If Guerin is on Team USA then Team USA won’t medal. I absolutely can’t see him on that roster. I also think Gogo is a huge longshot but Orpik will almost definitely be on.

Guerin can keep up in a short tourny….te author mentions him as a 4th liner, I think that’s a bad idea. If I was making team USA I’d probably leave him off, but try can do worse than even a 39 y/o Guerin.
I think Goose is a longshot too, but a good idea as a 7th d in case of injury or if the Yanks find they need a puck mover. I know guys like Martin, Rafalski and Suter are good at it, but I think Goligoski is arguably the most skilled American defenseman. He’s low on experience though, which isn’t good.

Burke already said he’s not taking the most “skilled” team, so that works against Gogo. We need guys that can play against stud offensive competition. I don’t think Gogo fits that. I’d put guys like Gleason and Orpik way above Gogo. Sure, they don’t have the pure skill, but they are used to, and effective at, playing against top line talent and keeping them relatively in check.
As for Guerin, normally you look for defensive responsibility and energy on the 3rd and 4th lines. I’m not sure Guerin has the skating to do that anymore. He seems like a top-6 guy or nothing, and he’s not a a top-6 American. Are we going to throw out a Guerin/Gomez/Drury fourth line just to pay respects to the past? I hope not, because that’s the attitude that has sunk us in the past. Saying you can do worse isn’t the point, the question is whether you can do better, and I’m pretty sure that you can do better several ways.

I was saying Goose as a 7th defenseman, at best. For a puck moving option if USA gets into the tourny and finds they’re outgunned. I don’t think it’ll happen, I think they’ll leave goligoski behind, but I do think he has something to offer as soon as this year…there are better bets to start in the lineup but I think Goose offers more ability than the average 7th option
And the writer subbed in Guerin for Drury…Really I wouldn’t take either.

I do find the Guerin pick to be kinda odd. Who would you have taken over him? I think he’ll work out well but not on the deeper lines as you mentioned before, if in fact they will be using those as the speedy checking lines. And I don’t think he’s up to the task for the top 2. Yet I still feel as if his presence there is necessary. I don’t know why just yet, but maybe he’ll do something so I can justify it by saying “I told you so.”

I think guys like Langenbrunner and Pomonville are probably some of the wngers they’ll tab over Guerin

I have a hard time seeing Langenbrunner off the team. Captain of the NJD and having a pretty solid season. He seems to quietly have good seasons every year. He also has much more left in the tank than Guerin. And honestly, if I were a Pens fan I wouldn’t want Guerin going to Vancouver.

The D is going to be interesting. There are a lot of qualified players but not many locks.
The forwards seem more cut and dry to me, it’s more a matter of how they want to arrange lines. Do they put Brown/Kessler/Malone together for a monster checking line; or do they split those guys up and sprinkle a little grit in with all the skill guys and try to put together three lines that can score. You have the three grit guys I just named, and then here are the guys I see USA relying on for goals: Stastny, Parise, Kane, Ryan, Kessel, and Booth if he’s healthy. Not sure how they are going to try to arrange them though.
