They are in 3rd place in the KHL right now, but very close to the top. Plus #1 by far in goals scored with 150. They also have a couple games in hand, so Salavat’s right there.
Interestingly Malkin’s old team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk is currently tied for first. They have Sergei Fedorov and former NHL’er Stanislav Chistov leading the way.

Canada is the team to beat...
The Russian blue-liners are exploitable and most will not be willing to play the physical game that will be required to beat the Canadians. I also believe that Brodeur, Luongo and Fleury (hopefully) are better from 1 down than their Russian counterparts. Heck, I would probably take Miller over any of the Russians.
That being said, they have a ton of firepower and should be listed as 1a to Canada’s 1.
I’d say they are #2, not 1a. The drop off after Volchenkov and Gonchar is dramatic. I know their offense is sick, but Canada’s offense is rather impressive as well plus they have far superior defense and goaltending. But what do I know, I still think the Americans have a shot at silver.
Team’s sick. Probably more pure skill than Canada but do they have the defensive depth? That’s the question.

Right
Canada’s offensive power is close to Russia’s but their defensemen and goaltenders are much, much better. Should be interesting to see who wins the gold, as Sweden and USA could contend as well.

Geno Trade?
What the hell is all this talk on the front page about Malkin not needing to pack his bags?
Off-hand remark by me, nothing more. Last year there was a lot of talk the Pens couldn’t sign Malkin and would trade him to Los Angeles. None of these reports came out of Pittsburgh (or LA) and he wound up re-signing with Pittsburgh as soon as possible on July 1.
Last night there were Pittsburgh scouts at the Kings/Minnesota game in LA, so I just tried to make a little funny.
It’s probably no big deal though (it’s certainly not involving Malkin). Teams send scouts to all kinds of games, that’s their job to stay up to date with players around the league.
