Martin Brodeur and the Devils shut Pittsburgh out again 2-0 in snoozefest

Penguins vs Devils coverage - In Lou We Trust

The Pittsburgh Penguins have now scored 2 goals in 4 games against Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils.

The only goal tonight was scored on an innocent shot by Nicklas Bergfors, a guy who has 4 goals in 4 games versus Pittsburgh and 8 in 33 games against the rest of the league.

Brent Johnson played well, he stopped 31 of 32 shots and hung in there.  Hard to fault him when he was just one blemish away from matching Brodeur.

  • Sidney Crosby won 55% of his faceoffs (12 of 22) but the rest of the team won just 10 of 18.
  • Ruslan Fedotenko attempted 5 shots on goal (getting 3 on net).  He didn't show an extra hop in his step, but he was trying to put the puck on the net more, which is usually a good sign for his game.
  • David Clarkson made his return from a broken leg/ankle but left the game early after Chris Kunitz drilled him cleanly in the open ice.
  • Again though the Penguins just couldn't get over the hump and put one by Brodeur.

Apologies for the boring recap, but it was a boring game and a way to go out on a whimper on what otherwise was a tremendous 2009.

The game was...

blah. Period.
Luckily we get to play two inferior teams after a 2 day break…Maybe the Pens need a good ol’ Panther OT game to get them going.

yes… I actually missed the whole 1st part of the game, but from what I saw till the end I don’t think I’ll be watching the part I missed, although I have it rec’d

You have to see it for yourself...

Johnson can’t be faulted at all. He was out of his mind. I don’t understand why the Pens let themselves be shut out again. Lose, I can understand, but not so much another shutout. I know the Devils’ defense was on Crosby and Malkin like white on rice, but I also know other players on this team can score while the two-headed monster’s being bottled up—I’ve seen them do it!

Then again, I literally was so bored that I worked on a belly-dancing routine, talked with a friend on the phone, and switched to the Flyers/Rangers game a few times, so I might’ve missed something. At least the Pens weren’t being shut out 6-0 by the Flyers, right? I’m actually going to feel sorry for the Rangers fans at my office.

What game were you watching? That was the most exciting Pens-Devils game all year. End to end action and great saves on both ends. Not the emotionless trapping we’ve been seeing all year. Damn refs don’t give us a penalty till the end though…

OK so it wasn’t just me. I thought it was a pretty exciting game for Devils hockey. It’s a shame Brodeur is so good, Pens were in that one till the ENer…

well, not only did i over look the buffalo game, i really thought we’d light jersey up yesterday. shows what i know. I have to disagree about being bored though. Like yins said, johnson played great……just doesn’t seem like he can catch a break. he’s played solid in every start i can think of. As far as the devils being in our heads,… maybe? But Brodeur sure is. The guy’s unbelievable, hats off. I know i’m getting frustrated watching, so i’d have to think the players are at their boiling point…

At least, to this point anyway, it looks like both teams will stay in the top 4 of the Eastern Conf (anyone look at the standings? Caps/NJ/Sabres/Pens – - – - – everyone else) so that somebody else will have a chance to take out the Devils in the first round.
