Mt. Pensmore
The team: Sidney Crosby, Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemieux and Evgeni Malkin.
The theory: Lemieux (690 goals) and Jagr (439 goals) are the two obvious selections here. Don't give me any anti-Jagr sentiment, Pittsburgh! In terms of conservative talent projections, and assuming they fulfill their long-term contracts, Crosby and Malkin should fulfill Rushmore status. I'm looking forward to hearing from Pens fans. Will they put Tom Barrasso on their Mt. Rushmore? Ron Francis?

Personally:
—Lemieux and Jagr are locks.
—In 10-15 years I think Crosby and Malkin will cement themselves as the other two, assuming both sign another contract in about five years. But, as of this moment, I think others have made bigger impacts:
``Ron Francis: 3rd in franchise history in assists, 100 career playoff points, huge part in the two Cups
``Tom Barrasso: 226 franchise wins, backstopped the 2 Stanley Cups
``Rick Kehoe: Only Mario and JJ have more points for the franchise, 4th in career games played
``Jean Pronovost: 3rd in the franchise in games played and 3rd in goals scored, 5th in overall points
Personally I’d round out the Mt. Rushmore with Francis and Barrasso for the time-being….But if you really have to carve it in stone it’d probably be safer to go ahead and put Sid and Geno on there.
Well
It’s tough… Malkin and Crosby put up more impressive numbers than anyone on the list(save Mario and Jagr), but they just haven’t been around long enough…
Barrasso is kind of a tough one to add for me though as the top 4.. given he was the Pens goalie when they won the 2 cups… I don’t know… I kind of feel that the Barrasso earned his honors by being steady for a long time… more than being like Jagr or Mario being great for a long time…
I kind of want to add Coffey to the list(the 100 point seasons as a defensemen are amazing)… but he just didn’t play here long enough.
I guess I’ll go with what Hooks said, Mario, Jagr, Francis and Barrasso… but in 2-3 years… I’ll be dropping the last 2 and adding Geno and Sid
Stros I almost included Coffey on my finalists list; 440 points in 331 games as a Penguin is absolutely sick for a defensemen (even if it was a different era).
But 331 games is the equivalent just over four seasons, like you said just too small of a sample size to be an all-time Penguin even though he’s definitely an all-time scoring defenseman.

Barrasso was a good goalie in his own right, but it would’ve been hard for any goalie to lose during the 91 and 92 runs with Lemieux, Francis and Jagr running the show on offense.
I’m with Stros – I feel it’s too soon to throw around Malkin and Sid. But given another two or three years I can’t see anyone questioning it.
