Pittsburgh Penguins trade rumors: Ryan Whitney
This isn't the first time Ryan Whitney's name has jumped into the mix of things and it probably won't be the last. CTV.ca suggests Whitney is one of the top names likely to move by the deadline, saying, "Whitney could fetch the quality forward Ray Shero is seeking."

Can’t see Nash leaving Columbus this season, he’s the captain and centerpiece of the whole franchise….Plus the BJ’s are in 6th place in the West and trying to make the playoffs for the very first time.
But he will be a UFA after next season, so maybe this time next year his name will be in the rumors. Even then though, with Nash’s salary ($7 million next year, more when he’d be a UFA), I don’t think the Pens could fit him in with the core of Crosby, Malkin and Fleury. Those 3 players are gobbling up $22.5 million of the cap. Add Nash to that and that’s four players eating up ~$30 million.
In short, the only time Crosby is going to play with Nash is Team Canada in the Olympics.
Maybe it’s a crazy thought, but what about Gaborik? I know he’s coming off a dramatic year of contracts that ultimately led to an even more dramatic year of surgery, but if he can be had for cheap on a short-term deal, do you think he’d seize the chance to regain his value? I mean, put him on a line with Sid and have him score 30-40 and suddenly he looks like a big name again for other clubs after his time in Pitt is through.

no no no!
I would hate to see the Pens give up any quality players for Gaborik. He’s an all-world talent, but not really the scoring winger we need when he’s sitting in the press box with one injury after another. Which is pretty much all he’s done the past few seasons.

Well he’s a UFA this offseason, so the Pens wouldn’t have to give up anything for him. Unless of course they have to clear cap space. But I don’t think teams will jump on signing him, considering his past two seasons, which may give the Pens a slight edge to toss out maybe a two-year, $5 million contract his way. It’s almost like saying, “Play for us for two years, we’ll make you look good. Then go somewhere else for more money.” If teams aren’t offering him much, whose to say the Pens can’t benefit from it?
Heck, they did it with Mark Eaton and his Jello knees.

What a cruel, cruel world… lol

I thought Gaborik was supposed to be out for the season with his groin injury?
That would be really sick if the Pens could get him, but it’s hard to imagine that happening (and Gaborik being healthy) outside of your xbox360 or ps3.

Yay for fantasy? :)
I definately should get that nhl09 game… itching to play it.

I love the NHL 09 game. I have it for 360, and I love how you have to develop the player in the AHL before he can get to the NHL. They start you on the 3rd line, and you make your way up to the first line. The only thing is when you want to do nothing, but score goals it’s hard to get assists.
Yeah the create-a-player feature is pretty rad. I created a defensive defensemen and just checked everyone with a pulse. Fun times.

Last I heard it was hip surgery. I think something along the lines of what Sergei Zubov had last season with the Stars. Whether or not that developed from another injury (groin/sports hernia) is just a guess.

if a trade happens
It’ll have to involve a team looking for a good young defenseman (since that’s what we’ve got to offer). Anyone else like the idea of trading Whitney to Tampa for Martin St. Louis?

Straight up would be great but unfortunately highly unlikely in my mind. They’d probably want a pick too. I know the Pens are young and can afford to give away a pick here and there, but two years of giving up a first round pick might not be the best of options. I guess it all depends on how long Pitt could grab St. Louis for. His time in town may make giving up a first rounder all the more worthwhile.

I'm not trading Whitney for St. Louis
unless it’s a trade with the stipulation that St. Louis signs a contract.
The Pens don’t need to give up talent for a rental.. especially when they are out of a playoff spot(as of now)
agreed
Didn’t know St. Louis was a UFA. That would make it a poor trade for Pittsburgh.

Trading anymore 1st round draft choices seem like a mistake to me. Teams like the Pens should covet first round draft choices. We need all the youth and talent we can get because right now we only have 2 stars. We have way to many grinders. We definately need to acquire more players with a scoring touch.
another questionable trade scenario
How about Whitney to Anaheim for Ryan Getzlaf? The Ducks seem like a team in rebuilding mode to me, with a ton of players going into free agency after this season, their top 2 defensemen on the trading block, and a good chance of missing the playoffs. Anyone think they’d part with Getzlaf to get an excellent young defenseman currently under a longer-term contract? (My own answer to this question would be “probably not”, but I’m interested in what others think.

Honestly I’m kinda out of the loop in terms of Getzlaf. I think it’s probably because I haven’t seen him play enough, so I don’t think I’d be the best judge of character on this one.

Well, he’s a Brian Burke draft pick, so that should tell you he’s big, tough, and aggressive, but he’s a talented scorer as well and still young. I think the Ducks would be crazy to trade him, but if they’re intent on rebuilding their team a player like Whitney could be a priority for them.

Or perhaps holding onto a guy like that would also be a priority. Hmmm…
I really think the Penguins will be quiet come the trade deadline. There’s nothing they can really gain. In fact, I’d say the sacrifice outweighs the benefits.

As I say, the Ducks would be nuts to trade him. It would only happen if a guy like Whitney is REALLY what they’re looking for long-term. Which they might be.
I think they’ll be active, actually. The odds of making the playoffs are still good, so there’s still reason to believe that good things can happen with this year’s team. And I believe that the difference between this year and last year is a small number of personnel issues, so even minor trades could have a big impact. (Well, I HATED the Therrien firing, but that’s another subject.) Acquiring a decent scoring winger with speed to play with Crosby, and 1 or 2 veteran “character” forwards who can provide some stability, might be all this team needs to be dangerous in the playoffs.
