The American Hockey League announced today that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goaltender John Curry has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 8, 2009. Curry was 3-0-0 in three appearances last week, stopping 80 of 84 shots (1.30, .952) and running his personal win streak to eight games.
John Curry has been lights out since getting back from Sweden, getting over a groin injury..Curry is 16-3 in his last 19 games down on the farm.

I’d take Curry over Garon as I am partial to minor league players generally because they play with so much more drive, passion and heart cuz they haven’t ‘made it’ yet. Then again I haven’t seen Garon enough.
From what we’ve seen of Garon it would lead us to believe we’ve seen enough. Although this season we’re kinda stuck with him, while he has the liberty of just sitting on the bench and collecting (i think) $1.7 mil. Nice life.
I’d like to think Curry will get the call up next season to sit behind Fleury. Given Fleury’s sensitivity to injuries these past two seasons, he’ll probably see a fair share of action too. I had no idea he was doing that well down on the farm though. I know the leagues are miles apart in terms of skill and competitiveness, but for him to go 16-3 definitely speaks highly of his abilities.

Garon’s salary this year is $1 million, according to NHLnumbers which is usually pretty accurate.
I think Curry will be the #2 next season too. He’s sure come a long way from being the starting keeper at Boston University two years ago…But since he is still young and unestablished at the NHL level, the Pens will probably sign have to sign a veteran minor league guy (like a Ty Conklin) to keep in the minor league just in case Fleury gets injured.
