Pittsburgh Penguins v. Boston Bruins [Open Thread]

NOTES
Mathieu Garon is set to make only his second start as a Pittsburgh Penguin, and his first appearance as a Pen in the Mellon Arena. Hopefully Garon can be like the guy he was last season when he won 26 games, and not the sub 90.0% save percentage guy he's been so far this season.
The Penguins will honor current senior advisor and jack-of-all-trades Eddie Johnston for his contributions to the organization. It's no coincidence this ceremony is coming against Boston, another place "Grandpa Eddie" has ties as a player and executive.

Again, TAKE THAT MLB.com! Free things rock!
footnote. Watching two games at once. Pens + Blackhawks…..Don’t judge me >_<
Nope, but the Hawks are actually on WGN for me to watch them against the Islanders. I don’t get Comcast Sports, which I believe they’re on a lot, so any hockey I can get my hands on here in Wisconsin I do watch.
Oh OK I misunderstood. I thought you were using Gamecenter to go back and watch the Hawks/Pens game.

You know it. And even worse Avery got two goals. I hate that fist pump goal dance of his. Not as much as I hate him, but it’s close.
In fact, three of the Rangers’ four goals came from guys who weren’t even on the team two weeks ago. Avery 2G, Antro 1G

Tim Thomas in back-to-back games. Let’s hope the Pens can make the most of that

It’s a tough penalty to take. I’m sure he knew better than to keep playing with the stick, but he was too preoccupied to kick the puck I guess he forgot to drop it.

It seems a little bit mean to finally give Garon a start against one of the best teams in the NHL. If we lose it will be easy to blame him.
yeahh. makes me quite angry to. i mean if fleury is actually really hot right now, make him play this one, and garon the next.

I think the first goal Garon gave up was more deflating than anything else. I mean, it definitely seemed like it would get the better of more than 50% of NHL goalies but for it to come 16 seconds after a Pittsburgh goal really just made it hurt a bit more.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
I have my son here and some company so I’ll just post during the intermissions. What a start……..and the Sid-Kuni-Guerin line prolly looks better than expected to Shero. Great moves. That one penalty by BOS, you know, the one where the guy was pulling a Mike Tyson by substituting the “bite of the ear” for a “grab of the ear” on Malkin….Unbelievable. Thuis game looks like it’s gonna be a high scoring one but stranger things have happened. Let’s go Pens in the 2nd.

Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
Even then Roloson was obviously going to steal the starter position.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
The way both teams are playing it seems like a solid goalie could have been our best shot to beat Boston… as the game goes on, their decision to play Garon today (instead of earlier against a different team) is more and more baffling.

Oh man. Karina. Stop. I have a button that can shut you up for the rest of the game and I really don’t want to use it. Please. Let’s talk about the game and stop getting so upset when people share their opinions on a point that you fail to see the opposing side of.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
That’s just ridiculous, think of it, honestly. Your not explaining anything. Watsoever. You think by shutting me up will change my opinion?? Like, why don’t you just explain yourself about what you think instead of getting tired of me talking back. We’re not getting anything through here if you just get mad when I disagree that Garon is “suckish goaltender.” Like why? No valid reason?
karina =)
by xXBelieveInPenguinsXx on Mar 15, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not the only one right now annoyed by your sensitivity to user comments.
You want an explanation? Here you go.
Garon came to the Penguins as a loser. He was 6-8 in a few starts in Edmonton because he lost to role to Roloson. His salary was over a million bucks for what we all knew would be minimal starts. He won’t be on the team next season unless the Pens work out a deal with him for less than what he’s willing to accept. He’s 31, which isn’t young in goaltending standards but today’s opposing goalie, Tim Thomas, is evidence to the fact that any player can have a late surge in their career.
You are not providing valid reasons either other then, “Support the team no matter what. Rah rah.” Look at a player for what he is sometimes – much like our Kris letang debate that NEVER ended over a week or two ago.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
And I’ll also add that late surge in his career will not be with the Pens. Not with Fleury locked up for 7

I guess I’m missing a pretty intense open thread here. You guys want to know the difference between an argument and a debate? A proper exchange of information can not be completed unless both parties start of with the assumption they could be incorrect. If you close your mind to the idea that you could possibly be wrong, then you begin to enter the argument stage. I have always said that to many people and if those exact words ever appear on google or some other site, then i want the credit for that, nvm looking up definitions.
That was the point i was trying to make. A debate is more educated and insightful than arguing for the sake of arguing

contrast that with three or so weeks ago, where it was more like, hoping the pens could take a point here or there and stay in the race
exactly. That’s what is at least making this run super exciting.

besides, is it really an upset if you have home ice in the first round?

srry but why did Garon sit there and not make an attempt to add to the pad save by bringing his glove hand back?
he has lots of time and never even attempted to bring the glove hand back and cover more of that angle…..and i’m not even gonna say how sloppy he looked fumbling to pick up his stick…..oh well, he got the W and isn’t it his first win here??

Yup. I’ll take it. It wasn’t pretty, but the offense saved the day.

Awww, it’s nice that the players are congratulating Garon. He wasn’t our Fleury, but it’s not his fault that they started him against Boston after 19 games of rest — and we did win the game. He gave Fleury a day off and it didn’t cost us the 2 points.
I agree. Wrong goalie to start today’s game, I’d rather they used hm yesterday. But like you say – whatever. We won.
