Puck Daddy: Trade Bait around the league
Definitely don't miss this post on Puck Daddy where 30 players that may move or are in the rumors.
The Penguins are mentioned as possible destinations for 9 of 17 of the forwards.....Including, brace yourself, Gary Roberts.
In the comments, put the players you'd like to see Pittsburgh inquire about....Or is Chris Kunitz (plus a healthy Sidney Crosby) enough to keep the train rolling?

Roberts? Not again. No thanks. Come on. Seriously?
Outside of St. Louis and Cole, I think Keith Tkachuk and Antropov would fit well. But not as wings for Sid. I think the problem with Sid’s case is that he needs speed to accompany his style of play. Antropov is a heavy skater and Tkachuk may not have that same step as he did a few years ago. In other words, St. Louis still looks pretty good.
But at what cost?

i do love roberts and he deserves to go out a with a contender. going out with the lighting isn’t something that roberts deserves. he’s a trooper in my books. a $%*ing ironman.
but what about Mark Recchi. he has like 45 points this year and is a good veteran presents
Something tells me Recchi won’t jump on an opportunity to come back to Pitt for a fourth time. The guy kinda got shafted last season when the Pens demoted him to WB/S.

ya did kinda get the shaft last year. no denying that. sometime i didn’t think he deserved. but i think the demotion for recchi was to clear the cap room to get hossa. but just a possibly
It was a weird situation. I mean, they dropped him in November and promoted Kennedy and Letang full time. It kinda gave hope for the farm system. But the way the team handled it, and Recchi’s reaction (“I’ll show you!”) just turned it more into a fight on the playground than a professional sports roster move.

ya it was a bad situation. still it must of made recchi happy to get the game winner last year when the pens faced atlanta just after recchi was claimed off wavers. feels like karma in my books.
Hah yeah that was a brutal payback. Leave it to a former Pen to break their win-streak. Divine justice.

Gary Roberts. 4th line winger playing like 8-9 minutes a night wrecking the other team’s defensemen. Would be beautiful.
Kunitz-Crosby-Fedotenko
Satan-Malkin-Sykora
Dupuis-Staal-Kennedy
Roberts-Talbot-Cooke
If Satan keeps producing, could be glorious.
Can I just ask this – WHY Roberts? He’s old, arthritic, prone to osteoporosis and already had his run in Pitt. Do you really think he’s coming back?
I liked his intimidation level, but I don’t think the Pens can afford to pick up a guy like him right now. Injuries haven’t been on our side this season, why adopt another set of them?

I have a lot of love for Mr. Gary, Frank.
Would still be nice to pick up some grit like Laperriere, he’s probably a little more reliable injury-wise than Roberts.
St. Louis reportedly keeps shooting down any trades, I doubt that will happen.
I gots the love for Gary too, but I’m looking at this in a “what’s best for the Pens?” way. Roberts already announced in October/November that this will be his last year. As sad as it is to see him go out as a Lightning, there’s a chance a Stanley Cup competitor really needs a guy like him.
I dig Laoerriere, now that you mention it. He might even be the guy who can fill the “void” that Ruutu rumors suggest to fill.
I don’t know what St. Louis plans to do, but I’d imagine he’s getting a hearty amount of brainwashing from the management there, telling him to work with them as they rebuild. If he didn’t carry such a high price tag I’d say he may jump ship for the Rangers just to reunite with Torts.

meh
Put me in the “Kunitz was a great move, but we shouldn’t make any more trades” camp. I’m looking around at all the names who are/might be on the block, and which teams might be looking to rebuild, and I’m just not that impressed. The team’s biggest shortcoming seems to be steadying, veteran leadership, so I could see adding a Roberts-type player, but ideally you’d want one with more in the tank than Roberts himself. Other than that, do any of the names out there really seem worth giving up draft picks or good players for? Or worth taking on high salaries for?
I would be happy if the Pens brought in a high-character, low-cost veteran player, or if they brought in a high-skilled UFA-to-be (ie., Gaborik, Afinogenov) for pennies on the dollar to play with Sid. Other than that, I say be patient and try to meet our needs from within.
P is for Latrobe.
I’m with ya on the Gaborik thing. I think if he’s looking to make some sort of a comeback next season that he’s going to want to increase his value. He may need to play for a pay cut because, let’s face it, not many teams will pay top dollar for a guy who hasn’t done more than sit on the shelf for over a year. So why not take some sort of two-year, $5 million off in Pittsburgh? Sid and Geno can pad his stats and he can pack up and shoot out of town with a nicely padded resume. I’m really interested to see if the Pens approach him in the offseason.
