Obviously Columbus thinks Steve Mason is for real!
Sucks, I wanted to see Vermette as a Penguin, but obviously the Pens wouldn’t have the kind of trading piece like a Leclaire to offer.
by Hooks Orpik on Mar 4, 2009 10:27 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think Leclaire carries the same kind of weight as Gaborik. Injured but talented, tested but unproven. Ottawa gets what they need in the end though…maybe

A rumor on ESPN suggests Malone may be dealt. Of course it’s also one of those ‘Insider Only’ things, so there’s a chance you’d open it and it says “Just kidding.”

Here you go...
Shhhhhh…. :)
Lightning shops Malone
Ryan Malone | Lightning
The Lightning offered F Ryan Malone to the Rangers in exchange for D Marc Staal and were turned down, according to the New York Post.
The Lightning had been rumored to be dangling Malone, according to The Boston Globe

I find that very hard to believe. In fact, I’m sure it took a while for the Rangers to respond. They likely had to finish laughing first.

A friend of mine had a free trial for a month. It’s a joke. It’ll say something like “Ryan Malone to be traded” and then say, “According to the NY Post.” There’s really no insider info, it’s more like they do the leg work for you. You can find it all on your own if you wanted to.

haha I did see that.
“According to sources within the Calgary Flames organisation, the Ottawa Senators are willing to part with LW Jarkko Ruutu, a 1st round pick and D Anton Volchenkov to obtain the services of G Mikka Kiprusoff. Remember, you heard it here first!”
I love how everything is spelled wrong (much like Eklund’s take on the English language). It’s truly genius.

Long story short – back when I first started up on SBN he contacted me about blogging for him on the site. He asked me for my number and then never e-mailed or called again. While I wasn’t exactly flattered by the idea of writing for HB, I was a bit insulted by his lack of professional demeanor. Then again that’s his flaw, not mine.

that could be good. i don’t mind antro. i just wouldn’t give up much to get get him thats all. but how would he fit in. 4th line center or 2nd line winger
by lambofgad on Mar 4, 2009 11:33 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He might be an offensive threat on the fourth line. I guess it may also depend on what they do with Satan. If anything he can take over the role that Satan left behind
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com

I was thinking second line winger with Malkin and Sykora, then put Tanks up with Crosby and Kunitz.
by PensFan024 on Mar 4, 2009 11:43 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That conditional pick for Filewich is going to be a late rounder, he’s not making an impact in the NHL.
The Pens did grab an extra 3rd rounder for trading the rights to Malone/Roberts to TB this summer though, so the Pens do have some depth mid-round picks to work with.

You’d defintiely have to think that Goligoski and Lovejoy (who’s having a great season) are ahead of either Richmond or Wozniewski….Wonder if maybe Woz is a FA after this season?
Wilkes-Barre seems to be rolling on and I thought Richmond was a big part of their team and locker-room. Interesting they make that trade, wonder why they did…

Nick, here’s the Washington Times beat writer practice update.
We’ll see how serious is. Remember Crosby played on a broken foot in the ‘07 playoffs and it didn’t hinder him too much. Max Talbot’s battled through a broken foot all season too but it’s seemed to make him less effective.
It’ll be interesting to see what the damage is and whether or not it effects AO’s super intense style.

Calgary definitely upgraded, and I think they had to do that in the West where they’re probably going to meet either San Jose or Detroit in the 2nd round of the playoffs (assuming nothing crazy happens).

Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
by FrankD on Mar 4, 2009 12:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I know, it’s tough to assume anything in the playoffs, especially in the NHL where a #7 or #8 seed usually makes it to the second round about once a year.
I guess what I meant to say, if I were the GM of Calgary, I’d plan on seeing either Detroit or San Jose in the 2nd round of the playoffs…I wouldn’t want to assume the other way around and figure that one of the big dogs will get knocked off early. Thus the reason to stock up on Jokinen + Leopold while you can, even though it costs some futures.

TPB claims the Pens may be interested in Guerin or Ruutu. We’ve already talked about Ruu on here, but what about Guerin? Thoughts?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com

i like guerin he brings experience for the team and can produce. i’m trying to envision where he would fit though
by lambofgad on Mar 4, 2009 1:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Talks about Guerin have been made on Pen’s radio post-game talk last night. It seems like another rent-a-player deal, since Guerin is a UFA after this season. To me, this doesn’t seem like a great pick up for the Pens. He doesn’t bring much more in stats than Satan, though he brings playoff experience and leadership.
by MalkinMilitia on Mar 4, 2009 1:51 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I’d rather Ruutu to be honest with you. He’s a pest, al beit a penalty taker. But he is a secret weapon in the shootout, which may be crucial down the line here.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com

I agree on that one, even though getting Ruutu back means we have to give something up, when the Pens could have signed him this past off season. Nonethless, seems a better deal than Guerin.

It’s all in how they use him….In the right role Guerin could be a good stretch run player.
The team could still use more vet leadership to me, so that’s a plus.
I just hope they didn’t give too much up….NYI’s hand to trade him has been forced for a while now, hopefully they didn’t have much leverage.

Yeah, If they gave up anything of value for him I’m not going to be pleased. Obviously the experience is a big plus and he’s got more grit than Satan, but still not the “big deal” i was hoping for.

Guerin’s got 16g, 20a this season on a pretty woeful NYI team. I wonder if he might even get a chance to play a couple shifts even strength with Crosby?
Dupuis-Crosby-Guerin
Fedotenko-Malkin-Sykora
Kunitz-Staal-Kennedy

Anyone have any thoughts on that potential lineup? If it doesn’t work with Guerin, he could be flipped for Kunitz at any time….Nothing’s set in stone, of course.

How about Kunitz-Crosby-Staal.
I don’t care what the kid wants, it is in the best interest of the Pens to move him to wing.

Yeah, I agree. Typical Penguins though, get a winger for Sid and he clicks with a different center.

i think kunitz and dupuis would be better winders for crosby and would create more room for crosby to play with the puck

Seems to be a conditional pick, at most, we give up a third round pick for Guerin.

i wonder if the pens are in the works for getting anyone else

I hope they are, but probably not at this point???

They’d have to clear up some room first

They could still do it if it was a Staal deal. But who knows, I’m not holding my breath.

Trading Satan or sending Satan down would clear up about any room they need…
I still get the feeling Shero has one more up his sleeve.
by Hooks Orpik on Mar 4, 2009 2:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, good point. Satan is the wild card still out there. 30 Minutes left.
by JDMaker1 on Mar 4, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Since the cap hit is pro rated I think they only pick up about $1m against the cap. Going into the day the Pens had $3.5m free on the cap, plus, by demoting or trading Satan they free up the prorated amount for Satan which is about $860,000.
In essence, I am saying they still have room.
by PensFan024 on Mar 4, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
half an hour left and Satan on the trading block, I think something is going to happen.
by MalkinMilitia on Mar 4, 2009 2:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That $1m that I am reffering to is what they will pick up on Guerrin’s contract. So I think they have at least $2.5m left in cap room for the year. That means they can pick up someone with over $8m for the year, so long as they aren’t around next year.

In the past six days the Penguins have added three wingers, three Stanley Cup winners, three gritty guys (two with a little skill).
I think Shero has definitely added a great veteran presence for his over-all young team, and gotten some good fits as well.

Burnside (2:20 p.m. ET): Interesting Bill Guerin is once again on the move at the trade deadline. And there’s no doubt he brings an interesting skill set to the table with his playoff experience (he’s played 105 postseason contests and won a Cup with New Jersey way back in 1995) to a Pittsburgh team that is suddenly looking very playoff-ready. A word of warning, however. The last time Guerin, who is now playing for his eighth NHL team, moved at the trade deadline, it didn’t exactly work out. Back in 2007, San Jose GM gave up a ton for Guerin — Ville Nieminen, prospect Jay Barriball and a first-round draft pick, and Guerin failed to score in nine postseason games before he was injured during the second round

Good linkage, JD….That year Guerin did score 36 goals in the regular season, and it wasn’t that long ago.
Further, on a team with Crosby, Malkin, Sykora, Gonchar, etc Guerin doesn’t have to be “the guy” he can just be a piece of the puzzle.
All in all, I think this is a good move for the Pens if they use him night. He probably can’t go 20-22 minutes a night, but on the right line with 15-16 minutes he could still be effective player, in my opinion.

If Shero acquires Gaborik my head will EXPLODE!
That said, I don’t think it’ll happen, but who knows….After last year’s deadline I guess anything’s possible for Shero.

LeBrun (2:51 p.m. ET): We just confirmed the Coyoytes traded Daniel Carcillo to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Scottie Upshall and a second-round draft pick. Great deal for Phoenix in my mind. Philly has cleared up some cap space with this deal. So will they get Derek Morris or Jay Bouwmeester? Just got a note from Panthers’ war room on Bouwmeester and they’re still debating their options.
by JDMaker1 on Mar 4, 2009 2:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I don’t like the thought of Carcillo to the Flyers. The fit is just too perfect.
