Steve Downie at it again

I make no effort to hide my hatred of uber-douche Steve Downie, but he mostly fell from my radar after being traded to Tampa Bay. Can't say I was too broken up about it.

Today, however, I learned that Downie has been suspended for 20 games by the AHL for hitting an official with his stick. What kind of crazy do you have to be to hit an official with a stick? I am officially dubbing the term "Going Downie on Someone" (double entendre there, kids) when someone blows up and goes crazy. Perhaps not hitting-official-with-stick crazy (who DOES that?!) but above and beyond the limits of normal aggression.

Jeez, I hate Steve Downie.

Dunman, did you see this piece on Deadspin about Downie yesterday?

It is a super long read, but I think you would enjoy it. Downie is a prick on the ice, but he is a sympathetic figure of sorts off of it.

It’s kinda a sad story really. I mean, the kid was in the car with his dad when he died in an accident, lost hearing in one ear because of a rare disease and obviously has aggression issues. It doesn’t justify him being an idiot, but it kinda makes it more understandable in a way.

Also, from what I’ve read, he didn’t so much whack the official with his stick (which is almost what you’d expect from Downie). It was more like he hacked at his shins as if saying, “Hey, you. What, no call?”

If Avery needs rehab this guy needs a lobotomy.
