NOTES
Tonight, much like Sunday, we're going to start the thread over at Broad Street. I'll toss the link up in the comments once I get it. Then for the second we'll come back, welcome/agitate the Flyers guys and then stay put and send them packing in the third. I think I speak for everyone when I say it's been pretty fun so far taking these road trips. If you're new to the site then please feel free to join in. Strength in numbers.
The morning skate ran with the same line combos as Sunday's game so nothing new to report about the lineup. No injuries to report for either team, although I'd imagine Kimo Timonen is still not 100%. Brooks Orpik and Matt Cooke will hopefully get through a game without having cotton balls jammed up their noses.

Intense first period. Let’s get one in the second

So…really don’t know what to think of that period. Intense for sure, but yet again passing up chances.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
By the way dude, how’d you get that gash over the eye?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
Yikes, looks pretty gnarly though.
When I played I either wore a full cage (college mandated) or nothing at all. Half visors never seemed worth it to me.
yea i am a half visor solely for blocking shots on d….as I am still trying to live the glory days out playing rec indoor roller…haha
You know of a league anywhere that follows anything resembling NHL rules? I play goal a lot and I hate rules that encourage cherry picking. It’s like the league should just be called Run The Goalie League.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
I don’t think I’d play if I couldn’t wear the whole cage or a full-face visor deal.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
I’d rather gold. Although I wouldn’t be opposed to a black and yellow third jersey next year.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
Personally I think the yellow looks much better. If you wanted the yellow as alternates wouldn’t you lose those baby blues you guys seem to love so much?
A lot of people consider the blues to be cursed somehow. I think they’re okay, but as blue jerseys go, I prefer this one.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
What do you think of your thirds? I work right across the street from the Lawrence County magistrate’s office, and it brings back memories of state cops taking in people in orange jumpsuits. I like the black ones a lot better.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
The way I see it is the Pens could’ve had one and the Flyers could’ve had one right back. Two big missed chances on both ends. We’re going into the second tied at 0-0 so 1-1 wouldn’t have made that big a difference.

Period was wasted by both killing off stupid penalties

Ahh, that was a great steak dinner. First period wasn’t too shabby either.
PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.
They stole one in Jersey, but blew the first at home. They need this one like the Flyers do tonight.

I know this isn’t exactly going out on a limb, but I got a feeling Carolina-NJ is gonna be a 7 game dance.
Canes not far removed from winning Cup.

Come on Cooke, you idiot. Stop letting them take you off your game.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
Back and forth, a couple penalties, couple of good chances. Fairly even.
Not nearly as much after whistle confrontations as last game though.
If that was on Orpik, I was going to apologize. However, that’s just a dumb penalty.

I really think Cooke has hurt the Pens more this season than he’s helped

Give him a blanket party, Full Metal Jacket style.
So long as he doesn’t shoot me.

This is an ugly Powerplay, but the Pens keep losing the battles and can’t get the puck out.

He rode the puck into the net. Can’t allow that.
by chillicothe20 on Apr 21, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Personally, with the call on the ice being a goal, there won’t be evidence to overturn
by Geoff Detweiler on Apr 21, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions
is the nfl standard at play here, must have “indisputable visual evidence” (whatever that means) to overturn?
That sure as heck isn’t a kicking motion or anything absurd.
PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.
He didn’t punch it in. It was obiously a deflection. He wasn’t even looking at the puck

I normally wouldn’t agree, seeing as how it’s Staal, but let’s do it and see what happens. Couldn’t hurt

I’m surprised Pitt didn’t decide to take a penalty too and make it 4-on4

The announcers need to think of a nickname for Fleury. They insist on saying his full name every time he does something.
Random...
But that’s the first time i’ve heard a goalie slap his stick on the ground at the end of a PP in a loooooong time. Fleury always do that?

Yes. Most do, it’s just not always easy to hear.

To his credit, I don’t think MAF dove. He simply flailed.
by Geoff Detweiler on Apr 21, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions
He dove to make a save at the exact moment Richards’ skate hit him. I wouldn’t say it was a dive in the conventional sense of the word. More like a desperation save
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
I agree with you, but another factor is that Fleury wasn’t comfortable last game (2 early goals). Once he settles in like this, like every good goalie, he’s tough to beat.
One could argue Biron, who started Game 3 very strong, benefitted the same way.
Travis just updated on Twitter a few minutes ago that the Flyers needed to get traffic in front of him. Even that’s not working right now

In talking about the Richards tripping call, Errey started talking in falsetto. Maybe he’s high instead of drunk.

Philly has been dominating this period. Fleury is solely responsible for the Pen’s even being in this.
I guess not. I thought puck in crowd has always penalty.

Thanks for the updates…
STL looks cooked and surely CBS isn’t much far behind them.
The other top teams out West are gonna get some rest, which doesn’t bode well for San Jose — as if they didn’t have enough problems on their hands already.
My Rinkotology bracket might be ruined after the first round. Ugh, heh.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
Mine’s actually looking decent since I called Anaheim winning….I got a couple wrong, but for the final four teams I’m lookin good…..Surely that will fall apart soon though.
Well you picked NJ and Washington right? Both are showing signs of turning that around

Meh, I’m overreacting. I had the Sharks, Wings, Blackhawks, and Canucks in the West, and Bruins, Canes, Caps, and Pens in the East.
I wouldn’t cry too much if the Caps lost, though.

Of course, the number of games is going to be all wrong. Some of them are already impossible.

Truth, but that was a ridiculous save by Fleury.

Good save. Not ridiculous. It was too heavily aided by incompetence to be “ridiculous.” Just my opinion.

Ok, This game there will be no complaining about ref bias. And if there is, I’ll shut them up. Carcillo got away with a cross check in front, and there was a hook on Hartnell let go.

Depends on what you call quality. He faced about 35.1 shots per game as a rookie and did at least average for the team. The first time he was really, truly above average was last season.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
Christ, these fans will boo anything. Goalies love quick whistles, and the fans boo one.

Nah, Fleury made a big mistake by staying in butterfly that whole time, getting knocked down or not. He should have been back on his feet by the time Carcillo took the shot.

Seriously. If it takes THAT much to get one, I highly doubt we’re seeing another >knock on wood<
PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.
You should know better. I was watching the Caps game last night with two guys I go to school with that are new to hockey. They kept trying to say “shutout” during the last half of the third and every time I saw it coming I just shouted them down. I had to wait until after the game to explain why I was screaming like a maniac.
ugh.
Just when I was in shock over the last save…

If the Pens keep playing the clock and let up on the pressure they run a big chance of losing this one. Have to balance it out on the other end
