Fan intelligence
I don't often talk in the first person in my blogs very much or go outside the game to point something out but today I am because I ran into ignorance at one of it's highest levels today.
I work at Giant Eagle. For those of you that do not live in the tri-state area, Giant Eagle is a grocery store chain. I work many jobs within the store but today I was at the service desk. We are allowed to wear Penguins gear to work this weekend so I had my jersey on and this guy who is originally from Boston walks to the desk and decides to engage me in a sports debate based solely on opinion with no evidence to back him up.
His claim: Milan Lucic is a better hockey player than Sidney Crosby. What? Yes. It's true. That's what he said to me. I don't have to tell any intelligent hockey fan that Sidney Crosby was third in the league in scoring with 103 points. Meanwhile, Lucic barely cracked the top ten of his own team with 42 points. His argument was that Lucic does all the little things better than Crosby. Great. That's his job. If you're going by that logic then Jordan Staal is the best player in the NHL.
I would have even accepted if he tried to tell me that Savard was better than Crosby. At least that could potentially be backed up with some numbers and you could make a halfway intelligent argument but saying that about Lucic is asinine.
I am aware that there are fans like that in every city. Even Pittsburgh has just as many dumb fans as anyone else in the league. I suppose in a perfect world anyone who wanted to argue about sports would have intelligence about the game and the numbers. However, it's usually the casual fan that argues the most.
The content expressed in fanposts does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the staff here at Pensburgh.com. FanPosts are opinions expressed by fans of various teams throughout the league but may be more Pittsburgh-centric for obvious reasons.

I lived in Philadelphia for 2 years and they have the some of the most faithful fans their (bless their hearts). However, they also have the worst “fans” I’ve ever encountered. It made me sick to see professional sports figures encounter such childish reactions from its “loyal supporters”. I’m thankful I don’t live their anymore. Pittsburgh has a wonderful fan base for all three professional sports teams. Thank you Pittsburgh faithful!

Sounds like a case of overthinking to me. It’s not uncommon for people who think of themselves as more or less experts in something, especially a sport, to try and find outlandish opinions in an effort to demonstrate how much smarter and more knowledgeable they are than other fans or how they don’t let the media shape their opinions.

Thats like new Caps fans. I totally respect long time Caps fans opinions, but when an obviously new to the game fan tells me that Brashear is one of the Caps best defenseman, I really don’t know what to say other than correcting them.

Brashear sure looked like one in the Rangers game yesterday. He put a hit on Colton Orr that sent him to the dressing room in a cloud.

I had this conversation before that, and it was pretty painful explaining what an enforcer does in comparison of what a defenseman does.
by MdPensfan on Apr 28, 2009 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well when he goes around hitting people like that he’s taking on more the role of an agitator than an enforcer, imho. If he’s going to go pound people to the ice because of some sort of grievance against him or one of his teammates then he’s an enforcer. Carcillo’s stick to Talbot’s head was more an agitator move than enforcer move. Then in game 6 Carcillo showed he can do both.
Either way Brashear’s out for six games. For a guy normally dubbed an enforcer this is pretty meaningless in the playoffs anyways…

disagree
i am not familiar with the caps roster other then the obvious names that pop out however loosing a guy like brashear can be big if the pens dont exploit it. who do they have around now to keep the hit counts on thier stars down? sick’em kunitz!

I don’t think it’s a big deal that he’s out. The only guy that would have fought him to begin with is Godard who we don’t dress. Enforcers are a regular season commodity. The playoffs are different story. You saw it in the Flyers series with both Godard and Cote being scratched all series long. No one is willing to take dumb penalties that enforcers often times take.

but the enforcers do a good job of keeping the excessive hits down on the stars, thus lowering the wear and tear. this time of year they can come in really handy. the reason goddard is scratched is because his talent level isnt up to par, not because he takes dumb penalties.

I wouldn’t call Donald Brashear a beacon of talent either.

Go Boston ??
All I can say is that if this is true then Boston is damned lucky to have Lucic, because Crosby has looked pretty good to me so far.
On the other hand anyone dumb enough to admit he is from Boston loses some credibility.

Point taken
however, just look to your own fanposts and find that your own fans (One of them, anyway) think Jordan Staal is better than Alex Ovechkin and that AO is an “average” forward in the league. Every team has them, and you just realize they’re clearly biased people who love their team too much, and move on. Because at that point, nothing you say to them will change their mind.

lol, cant a guy have some fun at work…holy cow did that rub some people the wrong way… we will see if AO is worth all the hype. the bad thins about this upcoming series is that someone will be deemed as “not MVP worthy” when its all said and done. even though both players turned in mvp caliber performances during the year

ao is a huge playmaker, see malkin.
these types of players generate chances, i hope this is sufficient. it’s like having a star qb sam bradford and all the attention being put on the pass by the defense, and that lets an already good player knowshaun moreno take advantage of their tendacy to respect the throw. these players get overly analyzed by their stats, and often lacked on mere presence.
example, flyers have to play crosby, lets kunitz deck kimmo. etc.

i understand
how folks can take on convo or thread and latch onto it without knowing exactly what one is thinking. it is very fair to say that AO is not gods gift to hockey (same goes with sid and geno). it is fair to say that it is too early to tell if these guys are destined for the cup and/or hall of fame greatness. I personally dont think AO has the skill set or the peices around him to take over a game. yes he does have a few good players around him, but we saw it in game 6. sparked by max’s fight, sid and geno collectivly said we will not loose this game. the rest of the team followed suit. am i clearly biased towards the pens, yep. do i occasionaly like to stir the pot and see what happens, yep. however i would much rather have a good discussion about the players rather then having one with a troll (not shagg) who blasted the origonal author of the article in question as being a homer.

If his name isn’t Malkin or Ovechkin, he doesn’t have a prayer of being a better player than than Crosby right now. And honestly, even bias accounted for, in terms of “all around” I think that only applies to Malkin.

They are EVERYWHERE!
As a general rule…people suck. Most of them get a whiff of something in passing and believe themselves to be an Individual by repeating it and making it their own…even though its incorrect. Look at all of the Philthadelphia fans chanting “Crosby Sucks”. That is what is clinically known as MASS IGNORANCE! Yet, at the intermissions and the end of the series, these “Fans” were trying to get his autograph. They are just jealous…plain and simple.

I like your general rule
And I’ve been known to shout it numerous times. But I honestly don’t think the majority of the Philly fans who chant “Crosby Sucks” (myself included) would argue with the fact that he is one of the Top 10 players in the league. I would put him Top 5 easily, if not No. 3. I still think he sucks. Is it jealousy? Maybe, but I don’t think so. My problem with him is how he came into the league and how he carried himself. Hell, even how he still carries himself – mainly, his reaction to a “hook” he received after a whistle in Game 4 – bothers me. Would we love having him on our team, of course. But that doesn’t mean we are jealous.
Bottom line, it’s not ignorant to use a three-syllable phrase to show our dislike toward one of your top 2 players. It’s heckling. Whether that’s appropriate or the best use of our energy is a matter of opinion. And even those fans who would say he sucks and isn’t a Top 5 player, the majority of those really mean that he’s overrated – whether you think that’s true or not.

i wrote something about the ease of chanting crosby sucks versus lets go flyers, people are drunk, lazy, and large majority at pittsburgh games just like to indulge in some reckless banter. we’re a football town still sadly, even though i’m not, and since the eagles continue to break their hearts, it carries over into other teams who don’t suceed, [flyers, phillies until recent glory], and no one gave a ____ about the sixers since AI left.

Nice, you insult Philadelphia for shouting “Crosby Sucks” but you replace Phila with Philtha.
That’s amazingly clever.
No, wait, let me guess you’re reply: well…it is filthy, so it’s different. Classy.

I agree they are everywhere
I am a lifelong Philadelphia fan. I chant Crosy Sucks. That doesnt mean I think he is not a great hockey player I get caught up in the Moment. And I paid my money and it is my perogative to yell it. The only people I have ever seen have a problem with it is the people on these message boards. The Pens fans that make the trip down to the Wachovia Center seem to get a chuckle out of it. Most of the Pens fans that I have met in person at both arenas have been for the most part great people. The Wachovia center is a great environment to watch a hockey game. Thank god cause for the first couple of years the change from the Spectrum was tough. It didn’t have the same feel, but we are finally getting back to the way it used to be, and the idea of the Philly fans are classless is a joke. It is hard to be a Philadelphia Sports fan at least it used to be. Years of losing has turned the small percentage of knuckleheads that every arena has even more rabid. Ask the Phillies players who have the best fans in the world. It is easy to be a Steelers fan. It is a little easier to be a Penquins fan lately. You guys might want to start paying attention to that baseball team soon before the Philly fans start calling you frontrunners when that team gets good which might be on th horizon. If I want to yell Crosby Sucks I paid my money to do it. Plus before we decided to do it somebody mentioned whirling a towell over our head, but Bobby Clarke told us we would look gay doing that. And since he has Two more cups than Crosby we had to listen to him.

I don’t blame you for rooting for the Caps in light of Philly being eliminated. I was prepared to root for whatever team the Flyers were going to play if they advanced to the next round.

im the kinda guy where if we get knocked out, no matter how much i hate the other team i root for them. its much better to loose to a cup cahmpion then some sleps who got lucky for four games.

I disagree entirely. After losing to the Devils and Lightning (the effing LIGHTNING!!!!) in Game 7’s, and having them win the Cup only makes you think that you could have won the Cup too. Being 1 goal away from beating the Cup champion twice only makes watching them win worse because it so easily could have been you. Maybe it’s less painful when you won a Cup in the last 20 years, but we’re at 35.
