NOTES
Mathieu Garon gets the start for the Pens, his third start since being traded to Pitt. He's 1-1 (and came in as relief for MAF once before).
Joey MacDonald is the probable starter for New York.
Philippe Boucher makes his return to the ice tonight since injuring his foot.
Max Talbot was given the night off so expect some interesting line combinations to sprout up throughout the game.
Get your beard ready - the Pens have launched a beardathon. Who's interested?

Pens 9-2-1 in last 12 against the Islanders. Let’s make it an even 10.

Pens look very sloppy so far. Two penalties in a row and the puck is in their pressure way too much

I hope Garon doesn’t freak out after that goal. I remember the last game he played, he had trouble after he let one get by early on. I’m rooting for him because I think he’s in a tough spot and feel bad about all the hate he gets.
He mentioned in an article today that he’s not very comfortable until about 10 minutes in. To his credit that goal really wasn’t his fault. He was caught out of position because he played the shot that Weight took but was redirected right to the other guy’s stick. Can’t do much about that

True, but one of the things that struck me while watching Garon tonight was his poor rebound control. Garon is a butterfly goaltender, which is a style that relies primarily on the positioning of the goaltender’s body and equipment, for example leg pads, to keep the puck out of the net. One of the biggest drawbacks of the butterfly technique is that it relies heavily on shot blocking and thus butterfly goaltenders tend to give up more goals scored on rebounds than their counterparts who play a stand-up or hybrid style. With practice and experience many butterfly goaltenders eventually learn how to cut down on the amount and frequency with which they give up rebounds or learn how to block the puck in such a way that they can control the direction of the rebound to keep it away from opposing forwards. Against an opponent more offensively and aggressive than the Islanders this could pose a potential problem for the Penguins but luckily for them Garon is not their starting goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury is.
Definitely what you want to see from a guy who has been out as long as he has

I got this one on TV, sorry. You eye up ATDHE and channelsurfing.net?

Yeah that’s definitely the sort of line you want to have in the playoffs. A nice scoring third line

Yeah, even came up with a solid save right there on the PK

PS
Ovechkin still pointless on the night. Caps winning 3-1 over Lightning

Wow, poor Frank is all alone in here. Don’t worry no longer, the Brewers have decided to headless chicken their way to glorious defeat this evening, so why not join the scoring party with the Pens!
THUMBS UP!

Hah. New favorite picture of yours?
How did Ryan Braun do tonight? I have him on my team for the third straight year
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
Honestly, no team was touching Matt Cain’s stuff tonight. Braunie picked up a few K’s tonight, and jumped out of the gate on a would be homer….ended up foul. Rough start for the Crew’s pitching and pen.
And I love the England National Team, and that picture greatly amuses me because it’s like the most least enthusiasm ever! haha

The Yankees (my team of choice) haven’t been much better in the pitching dept although they did pick up a win today. Tex hit a HR so he’s out of the fans’ doghouse. With the way CC pitched the other night and the subsequent coverage in the papers you’d think he took that $160 mill from the writers.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
About that CC thing, I think the NYC media in instances like that, show how freakishly in the moment and crazy they are. It’s the first game of the year! All pitchers should be a bit wild, especially CC who has the stats to back up that he is a second half kind of guy, or at least, a slow starter. He’ll be a horse, especially when he said Milwaukee would have expected him to be the guy, imagine how he’ll fair with less strain as a Yankee…..wait.
But really, poor Yanks can’t gauge what they have until A-roid’s off the DL. I think Tex will be a great guy to have down the stretch though.
As for my Crew, I think they can do things, but it’s so dependent n starters not named Yovani to do well. I guess I’ll just wait for Gamel, Escobar, Jeffress, Lawrie, Salome, and Odorizzi to have their say on the team in a few years…unless we make some huge trades or FA signings…..I hate Suppan so badly.
Oh hey, a hockey game thread >_> … << .. >>

Suppan seems to be a much-hated entity around the BrewCrew. The season is way too young. Frankly I don’t really commit to baseball in any way until hockey is entirely over.

Well, Soup is such a nice guy, great charity donater and all, nice spokesman for baseball, but he can’t pitch……he can cook though, has a restaurant..
For me, I completely lost touch with football last year, not because of Favre-gate-summer-death-diva, but because hockey season started up, and it’s more fun to watch. I dunno..
I commit to baseball year round, ever much a Brewer guru.

Yeah he’s coming up pretty big. Some really good saves in close quarters. The only goal was a pretty crappy one – he was out of position because the shot was blocked and the puck ended up on the other side of the ice, right on the stick of an Islander. Not his fault at all.

Looks like the Rangers are going to make the playoffs. 20 seconds left if their 2-1 lead

I haven’t really noticed Crosby much tonight. I have noticed Malkin but maybe because I really want him to get points and beat Ovechkin
I think they’re both taking a lil break. I mean they’re out there and all but I don’t think they’re so willing to save a puck by diving into the boards or deflect a slapper in front of the net. And to be honest with ya I’m OK with that

Scuderi, Staal, Orpik and Gonchar are picking up a lot of minutes this game. Looks like Bylsma may keep the top guys in the 15-18 minute range

And hey, how about that goal? Looks like they don’t need to put in that many minutes anyway

Good question. I think it really is just an announcer’s way of putting something indescribable into words

Should I feel excited for us, or saddened for the Islanders?

Gamecasting this rather than watching it. Watching Bruins-Canadiens on NESN instead, and not regretting my decision (8 goals and 2 periods worth of 80s-style brawls = great television). But are the Pens about to be in 4th place (Philly and Carolina lost tonight)?

Florida came back to win; I didn’t think NY had clinched yet.

I flipped over to the Rangers game and the announcers were saying the Rangers are in. I saw Florida won too and was kinda wondering the same thing.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
Gotcha. Well, the Canadiens just gave up a Recchi game-winner in OT. So the Rangers might be 7 and not 8 right now.

It’s nice to think the Islanders aren’t a dirty team to worry about during these last few minutes

Man if not for that one crappy goal Garon was looking at a shutout tonight. Phenomenal game from him
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com
What a moral dilemma! If the Devils beat Carolina in their last game, and the Rangers beat the Flyers, the Pens will get the 4th seed if they win. So: is it still morally wrong to hope for victories by the Devils and the Rangers? Because it feels terribly, terribly wrong under any circumstance.
