With Ovechkin, that was something where I had talked to Gonch sometime after breakfast. He's just disappointed. He was out most of the year with a shoulder injury. He battled so hard to get back. He told us this morning to just go out and play. The best way to get back at them is just to beat them in this series. Hearing it from the guy who can't play, I thought it was a pretty good message."

If Gonchar is out for the playoffs...
Can the Penguins go far?
A lot of people say no…And the record without him says it all.
Orpik-Letang
Scuderi-Gill (shutting down the opponent’s top line)
Eaton-Boucher
Plus possibly Goligoski.
That team can’t go far??? With Crosby and Malkin lead the charge as forwards? It’s definitely not good to lose Gonchar, but the Penguins still have to be a formidable team no matter how you look at it.

In the 91-92 run the Pens lost Lemieux to a broken hand when Adam Graves gave him a slash. Losing Gonchar pales in comparison to the likes of Lemieux but it still hurts. I think the Pens can manage without him but it won’t be easy. Have to say I wasn’t overly flattered by Goligoski’s play in G5 but at least he more or less played an error free game. He still seems hesitant to shoot though…

Mario’s obviously incomparable but that Pens team had Jagr, Francis, Stevens and Tocchet for that playoff run, with Stevens and Tocchet in their primes to carry the offensive burden.
Without Gonchar the Pens have Letang and Goligoski for offensive defensemen and that’s about it. And that doesn’t even account for the defensive responsibilities Sarge covered that guys like Scuderi, Gill and Eaton will have to pick up on.

one thing to remember
when gonch was out, we had therians ultra conservative style in effect. im willing to bet if you ask some of the previous opponents this team is completely differeant. i think they can do it specially if gogo or phillip okay to thier potential

intresting choice of words
in the post game bb said “he ovie hes great with the puck”
maybe im reading too much into it but the tone told me he was getting frustrated with his play away from the play

I don’t think you’re reading too much into it.
