Game 7 Recap: Pens dismantle the Caps 6-2, advance to the Eastern Conference Finals

Ten minutes in, thanks largely to the boost from the home crowd and energy in the building, shots were but 4-4. The Penguins weathered the storm. The rest of the period shots would be 12-1 Pittsburgh, a figure no doubt influenced by the Pens having a 2-0 power-play advantage, but still.

Daniel Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks repeated an old hockey adage  yesterday: the best team always wins a seven game series. The Penguins finally pulled away tonight and buried their old nemesis the Washington Capitals. The Capitals obviously tested the Pens and while the score was evenly matched and back-and-forth throughout the first six games, the rest wasn't. The Penguins cycled the puck in Washington's zone more, forcing the Capitals to take 34 penalties to the Pens 19. Caps fans will invariably whine about the disparity, but when one team is controlling the play and forcing the issue, the other team has to hook/hold/slash/interfere to try and get the puck back.

Shots were 256 to 180 in favor of the Penguins over the course of the series.  The Pens low was 30 shots in Game 7, where they sort of eased off a little (but not totally) after scoring 5 goals in 30 minutes.

So pretty much the only reason the Caps even made it a series was the play of their stellar goalie Simeon Varlamov. Unfortunately for Varlamov, a Cinderalla story of a 21 year old who only played six NHL regular season games --but held the Rangers to 7 goals in 6 playoff games-- the clock struck midnight and it was pumpkin time. The Pens rocked him for 13 goals in the last two and a half games and he ran out of gas under the heavy schedule. Nothing wrong with it, just what happens when Pittsburgh throws everything and a kitchen sink at a goalie.

Still, a tip of the hat to the Caps. They were evenly matched through six games, even though only Alex Ovechkin, Nick Backstrom and David Steckel made real offensive contributions. Mike Green and Alex Semin racked up decent points for the series, but neither were particularly dangerous. I think news will break that both were playing through some significant injuries; especially Green who was a wizard of a puck rushing defenseman through the regular season but didn't show it at all in the playoffs.

The playoffs are a war of attrition, and Pittsburgh just was a little deeper, kept their guys a little fresher and had more in the tank. From Ruslan Fedotenko and Bill Guerin finding the scoring sheet when it mattered most, the Pens got better support and proved to be deeper.

In this game, Ovechkin had the game's first great chance, a clear breakaway on Marc-Andre Fleury just three minutes into the game. I thought Fleury was good, but not great through most of the series. MAF made the stop of the series when he denied Ovechkin there. If the Caps go up 1-0 early, the roof blows off that building and the game doesn't unfold the way it did. Fleury made it happen when he needed to. Good for him to have the chance to be big in a big game. Fleury wasn't flawless, he had another puck handling miscue that put Ovechkin's goal on a platter but by that point the game was curtains.

9 goals in 7 games for Sidney Crosby....Eight of them from on the doorstep.  Ovechkin has lit the lamp and is probably on his way to a second MVP trophy.  But let there be no doubt which star shined the brightest in this series.  Sure Ovechkin was a monster each and every game.  But one man lead his team to victory and the other is packing up for the summer.  I'll trade regular season MVP's for playoff superiority any day of the week.  Crosby's 15 points in a single series is a record for post-lockout play, if you're into that type of thing.

And how great it was to see Sergei Gonchar back in the lineup. Though Sarge didn't look 100% he still made the shot that led to Sidney Crosby's goal to open the game. And I don't have the words to describe how sublimely beautiful the play Crosby made, pulling a ricocheting puck off the back of his skate perfectly to his stick blade and into the net. As great as Ovechkin is and as great as Evgeni Malkin is, there's only one player in the world that consistently shows the hand-feet-eye coordination to regularly pull of goals like that.

It was nice in the handshake line to see an extended conversation between Ovechkin and Gonchar in which #8 pantomimed that he didn't mean to take out Gonch's knee.  The smile on Sarge's face showed "yeah, I know".  It was a dirty result (as Ovechkin himself admitted), but AO isn't a dirty player.  A physical one, yes.  A reckless one at times, but no doubt to me that he didn't want to hurt Gonchar in that situation, just a play that developed quickly at such a high level.

How about a little props to Craig Adams too?  I can't find the page at hockey reference right now, but Adams held a dubious title: he was the active leader among forwards to play the most playoff games without scoring a goal (41 games).  Adams isn't a scorer--and he's got a Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006 -- but it's great to see him get off that list by scoring a quick second goal that really took the air out of the Caps and their fans.  Was it a weak goal?  Probably.  But at the end of the day, it's still a goal.

This game recap has surely been a little different than most around here, and for good reason. This wasn't a normal game. And as Pens fans, even though we don't want to, I can't help but remember the deflating agony of Game 6 against Detroit last season. Sucks to lose like that and have it be over, especially when you think you have a chance of winning. So, even though Penguins fans need no reminder, let's be classy in victory and happy for the chance to celebrate. The Caps hung right in there for a hard fought six games, no need to rub it in. Let's take the high road and look forward to moving on to meet either Boston or Carolina next round.

I'd be remise without a final thank you to the Pens fans...Here at Pensburgh it was a banner game-thread with 1095 comments, a record for us.  Congrats to you guys for that and thanks for riding the game out here, we really appreciate it.

I imagine the next game will be Saturday or Sunday, so it'll be a welcome reprieve for Gonchar, and all the rest of the Pens to get a small breather. The bumps and bruises won't totally heal, but it sure beats the alternative of going home.

8 wins in the book, two worthy and heated rivals down....We're halfway to going dancing with Lord Stanley.

Great recap Hooks. So is Seth taking care of the Caps eulogy then?

by joshmejia on May 13, 2009 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t have knowledge of who’s burning who, but it seemed like Wysh was getting a lot of first-round opponents to do the honors.

Not sure how a Rangers’ fan could go after the Caps, since Washington beat them, but I guess we’ll see.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Seth does the Caps eulogy, and I’m sure he’d do a very good job with it.

Fleury needs a breather, and a bath to wash the stink of that series off him. He wasn’t dreadful, but the flower is awesome in the playoffs, and that series he was ordinary.

It’s too bad the series ended with a lopsided game, otherwise it would be remembered as one of the all-time greats. A game 7 letdown by the Caps pretty much ruins that.

Sure he can score goals, but can he cook?

Uhh, did you see the save on Ovechkin?

And other than AO, who’s got an incomparable shot, the rest of the Caps got 14 goals in 7 games. The Penguins aren’t going to see another shooter like Ovechkin again in these playoffs.

Fleury wasn’t great through the whole series, but he made the saves he needed to in order to move on.

He’s going to have to be solid, but all in all, I thought MAF was pretty solid all things considered.

MAF was good when he needed to be, which was tonight, early on. He wasn’t awful in this series by any stretch of the imagination, especially given the offensive firepower against him, but he wasn’t great either.

The best thing Fleury did this series was keep his cool. He could have gotten flustered with Ovie’s magic, but he kept an even keel and made the saves he was supposed to make.

Fleury needs a leash!

Like one of those that mothers put on their wandering children. One end attached to Fleury, and the other to the net cam. Every time he goes out to play a puck it’s an adventure. Tonight’s giveaway to OV that led to a wide-open goal was absolutely embarrassing to watch. Mr. Meloche, take the boy aside and teach him how to handle dump-ins!!!

Hal Gill had OV played. What would have been a big hit turned into a goal. Fleury is lucky that it was already 5-0 at that point. I’d like to think he wouldn’t have taken that chance in a close game…but…

Nice recap, Hooks. I also appreciated your posts on Japers’. Always nice to show the world that true Pens fans are respectable and classy.

Much, much respect to the Capitals. They played in the most entertaining series of hockey I’ve ever seen, and I’m 27. Sorry to see them fall in what was certainly not their best game. They’ll be back and better next year, and for years to come.

It’s true, I must eat my hat a bit calling out Craig Adams in my breakdown of Game 7. The guy scored a big goal for us tonight. I was also critical of Staal and he got one as well. I should keep picking on players, I guess. :)

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see No. 55 take Game 1 or 2 off. The guy looked like he was playing on heart and little else, but it made his part on the first goal all that more satisfying. It was nice to see him and AO make nice at the end. Well played, sir, well played.

Onward to the Conference Finals!

Beautiful… MAF’s save on OV in the first three minutes… was a deciding factor in how this game could have gone. Crosby… nuff said, exceptional. They all wanted it… they got it…. Gonchar being back, even less than 100 %, was a fabulous boost. Adams scored… really, wonderful, so happy that they are all on board this cruise we call " Lord Stanley you Belong to Us" Yes yes I know… many more games to come, but putting it out htere doesn’t hurt : )

Please don’t make me watch the recap of Fleury’s wandering, puck-mishandling adventures this series. His giveaway to OV was atrocious. Thank heavens it was great save in the first three minutes, and bumbling blunder when the game was out of hand. But this has become a huge issue in this year’s playoffs. Great Job H

Also i think even the most heartless and angry AO hater would have taken a second look at the discussion b/w him and sarge. It took a lot of class to appologize to him and my hats off for that. I also thought the caps fans both on here and in the building tonight showed a whole lotta class as well, being run out of thier own building, giving a standing ovation to thier team for a hard fought game rather then booing them off the ice. This was a great series showcasing the best young talent in the nhl. yes chicago, anaheim, and other teams in the playoffs have that but thier marketing machines are running full bore like the pens or the caps are.

Hooks, time to write an obituary again?

Salivating for some of your words on Puck Daddy detailing the demise of the Caps this year. Any chance you could incorporate some of Daryl Reaugh’s series quotes? Like how Varlamov let in Egyptian Cotton Soft Goals, and was “Leaky like a tea bag”?

I remember when he did the color commentary of the EA NHL series in the early days. I thought he was so annoying back then. He did a very nice job in this series, accurate and fitting with his descriptions.

by Malsby on May 13, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

No wonder he sounded familiar!!! Play-by-Play on video games is a big No-No for announcers in my opinion. I remember when Jim Hughson was on EA Sports NHL versions for awhile. It took me at least 5 years of deprogramming, a.k.a. not playing video games, before I could watch a real live broadcast with him on it and take the game I was watching seriously. FYI, here’s the history of broadcasters on the EA series of NHL games:

Live play-by-play commentary was introduced in “NHL 97”. Jim Hughson, currently play-by-play man for CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and also one of Canada’s best-known hockey announcers, provided the play-by-play for much of the series, excluding the Xbox 360 version of “NHL 07” and the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of “NHL 08” and “NHL 09”; which is provided by Gary Thorne. Color commentary is provided by Daryl Reaugh (98-99), Bill Clement (2000, 2001, and all Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions), Don Taylor (2002-03), and Craig Simpson (2004-…).

Eh, even Emrick had trouble with the broadcast. It seemed like after the fifth goal there was a lot of considerable dead-air segments and when Doc would pop back in, it was a weak attempt at humor. It’s great to see hockey getting some much love from everyone. Again, Pens lead off sportscenter and even during their review of the Pirates game they mentioned the hockey game a couple times.

Thank God it was Underwhelming

When the Pens went up 1-0 I thought, “Uh oh, here we go again, the Caps will come back. The first goal has been a curse so far.” When the Pens were up 2-0 I thought, “Hmmm, a quick goal by AO and the crowd will go bonkers and then it’ll be tied up by a Fleury gaffe and…” When we were up 3-0 I thought, “Whew, OK, good lead. But remember when the Pens came back against the Flyers? You can’t sit back against this team.” I breathed a lot easier when Letang notched the next goal to make it 4-0. But you’re right, 2 minutes into the second period it was over. I would have lost another year on my life it somehow went to OT, though.

It was certainly around the time of Letang’s goal that it became clear that this was not going to be the legend passed down through the ages that many of us(including yours truly) thought it would be. Congratulations to the Pens. I’m really happy that Adams finally got that monkey off his back. I didn’t want to call it because I hate being wrong and feeling foolish, but a couple games ago I got the feeling a score off his stick was on its way. He was getting chances all series, and he finally made it happen tonight. WOO!

by jackm on May 14, 2009 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

I agree jack, I thought that Adams was about to break through too.

But he only plays 7-9 minutes a game (including PK time) and scoring goals isn’t what he’s in the lineup to do, so I know what you mean, you can’t say it for sure or else you might look bad.

Also, I think it says a lot for Adams that when the Pens went to 11 forwards they left Adams in the lineup and scratched Pascal Dupuis….Dupuis fills the same role of a smart, grinding 4th line forward that can kill penalties and has been around the Penguins longer, but they stuck with Adams. It obviously paid off tonight.

Adams is an example of what I really like about Ray Shero. He makes the big moves to pull in goal scorers like Marian Hossa and Bill Guerin last year and this year, but he’s also always on the lookout for solid role players, too.

Dupuis was a good addition, and he will make his presence felt once Bylsma switches back to 6 D-men. Zigomanis got hurt, but I thought he did well when he was healthy. Now we have Adams, a guy who fills the same role as Dupuis, but seems to do it a little better. He also has the experience that comes with winning a Cup.

He may not always score, but it’s that grinding style of his that creates chances, and the best way to keep the other team from scoring is by keeping the puck in their end, which Adams does magnificently.

“Crosby’s 15 points in a single series is a record for post-lockout play, if you’re into that type of thing”

Hooks I thought Crosby “only” had 13 points this series.

nice writeup Hooks

I can’t really add anything to that. The Pens just played their best game of the season in their biggest game of the season; can’t really ask for more than that. I don’t know what’s being said in that locker room or what kind of practices Bylsma is running, but for God sakes don’t change a thing. Last night was just a tour de force in how to execute your game in a must-win situation.

I will give Ovechkin credit for his monster series (and for being gracious in defeat at the end), and I think Varlamov has a great future ahead of him. But I have to buck the conventional wisdom here and say that the Caps are not quite ready for prime time. It’s reasonable to argue that Ovechkin’s stellar play, Varlamov’s play in his first 11 playoff games, and the weakness of the Southeast division papered over some serious flaws that became obvious in game 7. Not that they can’t get to the next level, but their current group just didn’t have the will to win last night.

Great site, folks

As a long-time Pens & Stillers’ fan relocated to Southern Indiana, I’m glad I found this place. Everyone here seems knowledgeable and respectful, even the fans of other teams. I don’t have VS., so until last night I had to listen to the Pens’ radio feed online. I found the stream of the VS feed linked here, so thanks for that! (Although I definately enjoy listening to Mike and Bourque, I’d much rather watch what’s happening.)

Thanks for stopping by. Always happy to add another Pens fan to the ranks. Believe it or not most fans of rival teams are pretty friendly, despite the obvious evidence that the league is out to help the Pens win the Cup ;-)

there are some websites from which you can stream game video. atdhe.net is one, myp2p.eu is another. They are sort of in a “legal grey area” and sometimes you don’t get a very consistent stream. but, just a heads up in case you want to try it.

My apologies to the Pensburgh staff if its against the rules to mention such villainous activities.

Sometimes there is justice

Once in a while in this crazy world where wrong is called right and up is called down there is justice.
The arrogant, whining Capitals-from the front office to their left wing who gets away with charging star players on opposing teams on a regular basis- got their just comeuppance when the Penguins crushed and humiliated the team that was too busy congratulating themselves for “slaying the dragon” to bother showing up for the final game of their series.

Sometimes there is justice (huh?)

Thanks for keeping the non-myth of the obnoxious PBurgh fan alive! Tell me that you would have been so placid had every game’s Penalties been called in the Caps favor.
Boudreau complained once, after a OT game in which the penalties were 7-2 and two Pens’ interference penalties may have contributed to Malkin’s OT breakaway & PP.

Some PBurgh “fan” perspective-
In 1979 I believe I attended a Cowboys-Steelers Super Bowl rooting for the Cowboys to get crushed. About half way through the first half, entirely because of the impossibly drunk/obnoxious Steeler fans, I switched sides. That’s part of the reason Caps fans hate the Pens & Flyers.
When you lose, lick your wounds and move on. When you win be happy and classy. That’s all we ask.

And be thankful that Langway was not on the 2009 Capitals, or Crosby would have lost at least one limb and probably his hearing while languishing at the side of the net.

is it impossible to imagine...

…that the caps were actually committing more penalties? The officials don’t just call penalties when they feel like it…dude did something wrong. Did they miss some calls against the Pens? Of course. They also missed some against the Caps. I can count at least 4 times that charging or boarding should have been called on Ovechkin. There were Illegal Screens on at least two of the goals in the Caps first two wins, and Orpik was Blatantly interfered with twice on the goal that sent game 3 to OT.

I haven’t been reading and commenting on this blog for long but I can tell you this, The folks here are placid all the time. We love the Pens, but we also love the game and appreciate other teams and their fans’ perspectives.

Did you come here just to call us out? Perhaps before turning your blind eye on us after your team was beaten, you should have gone through some old posts and gotten an idea of how things go around here.

I passing, good series. It was fun. I hope we see the Capitals in the East Finals very soon.

Call Out Our Coach & I'll Call You Out

My post was directed (1) at the d-bag Bou-hoo-hoo-dreau and (2) the drunken idiots who often invade VC & Ravens’ s Stadium. I did not blame the officiating for the series loss, or state that the Caps were the better team. The Pens spent 2/3 of the series in their Offensive Zone, and Varlamov finally sprung a leak.

As far as my comments-
If the shoe fits, wear it. If not, my comments don’t apply to you. you know who you are (or aren’t).

My Langway comment stands; Crosby is fortunate to be playing in this era where D-Men clearing Forwards from the crease by whatever means necessary is a bygone concept and now usually a penalty, rather than the eleventh commandment.

so maybe rather then posting something that looks like an angry drunken tirade you should have looked into something a little more tactfull. It appears that you are not licking your wounds.

something along the lines of

i have no respect for my coach for whining about the officiating, maybe he should look in the mirror rather then the camera to figure out whats wrong with the caps. whil i d not disagree with the langway comment, you must have seen sids ability to vanish near the goal mouth. he skates in, backs out untill the d looses track of him then hes right back in there. plus its kinda hard to keep track of one guy when the forecheck is going the way its has been

sq. Thanks for keeping the non-myth of the obnoxious PBurgh fan alive!

yeah, that was clearly directed at one person who you so eloquently called a D-bag. Way to keep it classy.

Do you want to know what’s obnoxious? Calling out peoples spelling and grammar mistakes. That is what I would call a D-bag move.

by PensFan024 on May 15, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Picking on someone for spelling and grammar mistakes segues from his pointless argument anyway. He’s looking for anything right now and seems mildly content with pointing out grammar issues. Seeing as how his summer started a few days ago, I’m sure he’ll use all this free time to work on some better insults and comebacks for next season.

Ignoramus = oldtimehockey09

Anyone who spells loser as “looser” twice in one thread did not make a spelling error, but is in fact ignorant. I’m done with you cretins. Good luck to the Pens the rest of the way. I’ve got no beef with the Pens & their players, just fed up with ignorant & obnoxious Pens fans who can’t win without some semblence of humility.

Can’t wait until the Wings or Canes get a few more PP than the Pens , or especially an OT PP; I’m sure they’ll be no complaining by you hockey purists!

Don’t bother replying oldtimehockey, he’s banned. It’s one thing to cry about losing a series, it’s another thing entirely to go after readers. He said he was done but likely would’ve returned anyways. Now I just saved him the trouble.

I’ve been putting off joining this blog on principal, because, well, I’m about as far from a Pens fan as you can get. But I wanted to come over and point out that the Pens flat out outplayed the Caps in Seven games. I thought the Caps were outworked all series, and the Penguins consistently showed hustle and hard work. You can’t win a series when most of the game play is in your own zone, but the Caps sure as Hell gave it their all.

I’m not going to lie and say I’m pulling for the Pens the rest of the way, but I will admit that I don’t think I’d cry if the Pens took out the Canes, and depending on who the finals opponent was, took the Cup in two rounds.

As far as refereeing, the refs have been horrible outright all playoffs. To blame a series loss on them, however, is unfair, and really unrealistic. I saw stuff both ways. I’ll admit I was frustrated with what looked like a lack of consistency, but to say that’s what flat out made the Pens win? No. You create penalty calls. When you’re hustling, you get away with a few more calls, I think. When you’re dragging, you look lazy, you take more calls. That’s well within your realm of control, and the Capitals didn’t bring that aspect to the game.

I’m sure we’ll see you in the ECF next year. Until we beat you guys in the playoffs, this is hardly a rivalry.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
