Carolina and Pittsburgh...By the numbers

1 -- The number of starting goalies still alive in the playoffs who haven't won a Stanley Cup.  (That, of course, would be your Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury)

3 -- Hurricanes who have scored four goals or more this playoff series (Eric Staal, Jussi Jokinen, Sergei Samsonov)

5 -- Penguins who have 4+ goals this playoffs (Crosby, Malkin, Guerin, Fedotenko, Eaton)

1 -- Penguin who used to play for the Carolina Hurricanes (Craig AdamsMike Ziogmanis, injured, also was a Hurricane.  Thanks to "bubba" for pointing out my initial miscue

0 -- Hurricanes players with Pittsburgh ties (though Ron Francis and Tom Barrasso are in their organization)

499 -- The number of more assists that Francis has as a Whaler/Hurricane over #2 on the franchise's list (Kevin Dineen)

0 -- NHL playoff series Cam Ward has lost

0 -- times Cam Ward has played a playoff series against the Penguins

19 -- Playoff record for most goals in a single spring (set by Jari Kurri in 1985)

12 -- Goals Sidney Crosby has these playoffs

17 -- career points Crosby has (5 goals, 12 assists) in 14 matchups against Carolina

11 -- career points Malkin has (4g + 7a) in 11 games against Carolina

19 - career points Eric Staal has (10g + 10a) in 20 games against Pittsburgh

7 - months; which was how old Jordan Staal was when Rod "The Bod" Brind'Amour made his NHL debut in the spring of 1989.  As in 0 years, 7 months old.

Infinity -- the number of times it'll be pointed out that Jordan and Eric are brothers by television, newspapers and blogs....You may also hear they have two other brothers who play a little puck.

6 -- Number of Penguins and Hurricanes that have game winning goals this spring

Although I got a chuckle out of the “infinity” mention, I also laughed at this one:

They should call him Rod the Schnoz, for obvious is reasons. I know it doesn’t rhyme, but his nose is insane. It make’s Milan Lucic’s look only slightly hooked.

Craig Adams also played for the Canes. Was on the Cup team in 2006 and a couple of years previously. ;-)

That Kurri record is certainly in danger, especially if it’s a long series and definitely if the Pens move on.

The Staal Drinking Game: playoff edition

Everytime the Staal brothers are mentioned, take a drink.

If either of the oher two brothers is mentioned, take two drinks.

If the parents are mentioned, especially how hard it is to watch their boys play each other, take three drinks.

If Eric and Jordan drop the gloves, drink the whole damn bottle!

if the Pens make it to the SCF, you gotta think Sid’s gonna blast through Kurri’s record.

I think Johan Franzen might have done it last year, had he not got hurt, and missed essentially a full series worth of games (he scored 13, playing 16/22 games, and was just coming off a 9 goals in 4 games spurt against the nordilanche when he got hurt)…actually, looking it up just now, he had 12 in 11 games, including game 1 of the WCF, when he got hurt…

by ahtrap on May 15, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know…Crosby’s never been a pure goal-scorer, but he’s never gone to the net in the NHL level as much as he did during the Washington series. It didn’t hurt that Washington’s #1 defenseman had a bum shoulder and Washington didn’t have the muscle on the blue-line to defend him.

I don’t think Crosby will be able to score 4 even strength goals again from right on the door-step like he did agains the Caps.

Sure would be nice if Sid has 7+ more goals in him this season, you’d really have to like the Pens chances if you knew that.

by Hooks Orpik on May 15, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly, add in the fact that virtually every key player produced in the caps series at key times and this team may not have peaked back in feb and march, they may be peaking now. which is a very scary thought

7 goals in 12-14 games

You gotta assume that this series will probably go 6 games and the finals will go 6 games regardless of who the Pens play. It could happen, but I have a feeling goals are going to be a hell of a lot harder to come by against the Canes than they were against Washington and Philly, which is saying something because they weren’t easy to come by in either of those two series.

Love the Staal drinking game idea. I’m a Canes fan & am so grateful to be playing the Pens. At least now I don’t have to hear from the idiotic fans in Jersey, Boston or have to put up with the nonsense from Ovechkins crew. I’m looking forward to a good series & I think this will be the most entertaining series start to finish this year. Both teams are good, young, quick & extremely talented. The problem with Boston, Jersey, Washington & Philly is that they are built big, slow & defensive oriented (perfect for the season) then they get worn down & out “Offensed” & can’t go a complete post season. Pittsburgh & Carolina are 2 examples of being built for the post season. On the West side, Chicago will be soon. They are another young quick team. I look forward to this series & wish both teams the best of luck. GO CANES!!!!!!!

by Davefromthebeach on May 15, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, you’re right, though somewhat oddly. It used to be that big and defensive was exactly the way to survive the playoffs. Oh how things change…

Err...

Since when has Washington been “defense oriented”? They’re big, but they’re very fast and aggressively offensive to a fault. Hell, if they had anyone who knew how to backcheck, they might even have one the series. That’s a pretty big “if”, though, and clearly they don’t.

If I remember correctly, Orpik felt extremely bad after he hit Cole from behind and broke his neck. And, if my memory serves me correct, Orpik tried to reach out to Cole through Recchi after he was traded to the Canes mid-season and Cole gave him the cold shoulder. I don’t know if Cole and Orpik have kissed and made up since. I guess we’ll see what happens this series.

by gorgalor on May 16, 2009 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No doubt Orpik didn’t intend a broken neck with the hit, but I don’t know what Coles feelings are now. In any case, Cole plays hard, and can be a physical player on the ice, but I don’t see him or any of the other skaters singling out Orpik. That’s just my uneducated guess, so as you said, I guess we’ll see what happens.

Looking forward to a good one Pittsburgh. Can’t wait till Monday, and there are 3 instances of 2 days off between games. Aargh!!
