Around SBN: This Should Encourage Juan Mata

Looking forward

Well it seems logical that the Pens will face the Red Wings in the Stanley cup finals. Wouldn't it be extra nice for Hossa to be on the losing end of this series being he decided that Detroit had a better chance of winning the cup in 2009 and signed with them instead of Pittsburgh. This would be the ultimate slap in his face since he snubbed the Penguins last year!!

I truely feel Pittsburgh can beat this team in the finals due to a few considerations compared to last year...

*Malkin and Crosby are playing superb

*There are other players who are stepping up a notch and scoring

*A different coach

*The Penguins seem less nervous than last year and know what to expect

*The Penguins have figured out their opposing goal tenders thus far

I’ve been saying it all week – I’d love to see Hossa lose this time. I wonder if he’s thinking about the possibility of irony slapping him in the face.

Wouldn’t that irony be sweet…and what if he did it Ovechkin style, you know with his head down on the bench…i would take that and blow it up and make a poster of it.

don’t forget, conklin also signed w/ detriot this year. but he was less vocal. just kinda fun (hopefully) beating 2 former players.

True, but I think a lot of Pitt fans were sorry to see Conklin go but happy to see he would have a solid chance at competing for a starting role. Really no bad wishes for him when he left. Hossa is an entirely different story.

I was a fan of Conks. He really helped last year’s run.

agreed

i watched hossa win the memorial cup with our junior team here in portland, oregon. he blew out his knee about halfway through that championship game. i’ve loved and followed him ever since he played here, always knowing he’d be a stud in the nhl. never cared much for ottawa until they drafted him. i still followed him after they shipped him to atlanta for dany heatley. needless to say i was STOKED last year when the pens scored him at the trade deadline. and then to turn around and straight up BURN the pens and all of us, i feel, is unforgiveable! i’ve been cursing his name ever since haha. so yes, it would be sweet for the pens to win it this year against his red wings, but even SWEETER to steal it from hossa. only then would he be vindicated in my eyes.

just a thought: what happens if the pens DO win it? does hossa try to come crawling back? since the pens would “give him the best chance to win?” heh, jerk.

+1

The ironic part is he was the one who came so close to tying game 6 for us at the very end. If he makes that we go into OT again and who knows what happens? He could have already been a champion if he could have stepped up his game just a tiny bit more. Oh well. Hopefully, he’ll be on the losing team 2 years in a row.

That was such a close call at the end of that Game 6 you reference. Sure you can say he could’ve stepped up his game, but maybe another 10 seconds, clean pass and shaky Osgood was what the Pens really needed. Win as a team, lose as a team. I don’t wanna see him crawling back next season. Pitt couldn’t afford him anyway.

say it with me....

adversity

these guys have faced it time and time again this season.

loosing gooch for 50+ games
being down in game 6 vs the flyers…at thier building
being down 0-2 to the caps

then to take the canes out to the woodline like they have been the last three games, wow.
this team does not want to see anyone but them sakting with the cup and i think that is showing right now. from seeing the determination in sid and genos eyes and seeing how the grizzled vets like guerin, gill, and tank follow thier lead says a lot about the charachter of this team. should the guys pull it off i call the billy guerin trade one of the best in pens history. right up there with getting ron francis

SAY IT WITH ME: EXPERIENCE IS OVER RATED!

Because, even though I didn’t join you until game 1 of last year’s SCF, I’m guessing you were saying it loudly as you assessed the Pens chances of winning the 08 Cup.

The Pens have it this year. Sure, not as much as the Wings, nor the mystical knowledge imparted by actually being able to lift the cup….but they went through the fire last year, they been to the edge and there they stood and looked down, and even though it didn’t happen in 08, maybe they saw a way across for the future…

that future may be now….but then again…

*Malkin and Crosby are playing superb
Absolutely, and a possible key, asMalkin completely disappeared in the finals last year.
Extra year, extra experience in pacing himself over the course of the season, and the way he’s stepping up against the Canes makes him a scary matchup for whoever escapes the West.

*There are other players who are stepping up a notch and scoring

Yes…but…still don’t see a consistent threat out of a 4th Pens line, regardless of how individual players might be stepping up in one game or another.

*A different coach
Bylsma is doing s smashup job so far…but Therrien was a god in Pittsburgh at this time last year. Not sure that this really will play a role. Curious as to what you guys think on this particular point?

*The Penguins seem less nervous than last year and know what to expect
the experience thing, expounded on above

*The Penguins have figured out their opposing goal tenders thus far
First round, you didn’t play that great a goalie (IMO). In the last two rounds, the defense in front of good goalies has been missing in action.

It’s arguable that if Washington had one good, physical defenseman capable of bothering Sidney Crosby in front of Varlamov’s net, the Pens wouldn’t be here today. Sid camped in front of varly, and had a field day. Carolina was supposed to be better, but so far, the Pens still have room to roam around the crease.

Detroit will be different. I’m thinking you guys are underestimating Chris Osgood, as everyone does. But you know about the Detroit defense. You’re probably not putting up 5 or 6 goals against Osgood because the Detroit defense is superior to what the Pens have been up against so far.

I think there’s a valid point in there somewhere, but the formulation of “we’ve figured out the opposing goalies” isn’t the right way to look at it, it’s more like the Pens have found space and ways to manuever against the defenses, so as to make the goalies be the barrier. And ever since game 3 of the Cap series, the Pens have owned the opposing goalie under those circumstances.

and i think you are underestimating the timley scoring of the pens not to mention the fact that the pens team d is superb. of course all the pundits and prognosticators also said that we would ring up cam for 4+ goals on a nightly basis either. it will be a great series to watch for sure. just not for wings fans

I agree with about everything you wrote with the exception of your fourth line comments. The fourth line is currently made up of Adams-Crosby/Malkin-Satan. I could be wrong here but I think Crosby and Malkin are consistent scorers and Satan has been having a pretty good playoffs since he has been put back in the line up.

by PensFan024 on May 26, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

a 4th line including a superstar isn’t really a 4th line at all :)

And Adams has more goals than Satan…not saying that Satan isn’t playing well, but it will take more than a single breakaway goal to really think of him as a scoring threat.

by ahtrap on May 26, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

nevermind the fact he is a perrinial 30 goal scorer who had an off year this year and also sat for substantial time in the playoffs.

I don’t know, Satan is more of a threat offensively than Adams: Two of his three goals are empty net, and his other goal was more or less lucky. Adams has more shots on goal, but Satan is usually in better position and has a much harder shot.

Adams doesn’t have much value as a goal scorer and he isn’t particularly skilled, but he is one of the smartest skaters on the ice. In philly, he had a chance at an empty net goal, but rather than trying to beat two Philly defensemen and risking a turnover, he just played it safe around the boards and killed some time. True team player. I would love to see him back next year playing right wing with Ziggy (if we get him back too).
