Tales of the Tape: Red Wings, Henrik Zetterberg vs. Evgeni Malkin
I know what you're thinking - JDunman normally takes care of the fight recaps. This is undoubtedly true. But he has also advised me that he is short on time today and suggested I take the reigns. So here we are - a playoff fight between Evgeni Malkin and Henrik Zetterberg.

LOL @
the results of this poll. Malkin cheapshots Zetty and then they yank each other’s jerseys off and no punches are clearly connected after that….though it looks like Zetty gets about 4 small punches on Malkin. Malkin skates away checking for blood on his face. Hmmmm.
But take the fight. We’ll take the Cup.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
Wow...
You actually admit to being a Lions fan…I thought that they were mythical creatures, like unicorns and Wings fans who aren’t arrogant.
YES
I love these Red Wing fans! Such an undeserved sense of accomplishment. Like they have actually done something to make the Wings into such a great franchise. Congratulations Twon82….the wings wouldn’t be in this position without you!!!
Hey, I did have something to do with the Wings successes….I grew up eating Illitch’s crappy pizza…where do you think he got the money in the first place (well, other than screwing the Tiegrs to pay the Red Wings?) :-)
Besides, come football season, your steeler fan brethren are the same way, comes with the territory of being on the bandwagon of a winning team, you feel invincible and like you’re a part of something. Until, of course, someone takes it away from you….
No
bandwagoners here. I’ve been Steelers/Pens faithful throughout all the lean years. I still have a picture signed by Walter Abercrombie when I was but a lad. I remember how crooked Robin Cole’s fingers were after shaking his hand when he visited my elementary school. I still know who Warren Young is…
Didn’t mean bandwagon in terms of, “oooh, this team is cool, let me buy a shirt so I’ll look like I’m cool, too!”.
More like, the bandwagon you get chained to by accident of birth or geography, the team you root for because they are YOUR team. Like me and the Lions, that bandwagon has no wheels, hasn’t for a decade, but I’m chained to it, because I was a fan when Eric Hipple drove the team down to a position to beat the defending champ 49ers in the playoffs, only to see Eddie Murray miss the field goal (1983). Same thing as for the Wings, I became a fan when they were the dead things, with the immortal Nick Polano leading the way to a 40 point 1985-1986 season (a team, if my 10 year old memory severs correctly, actually had a guy named Warren Young on it…is that the same guy, or was the guy you refer to a Steeler?)
If the Lions ever do something good, I’ll be flying high, the same way as the Red Wings have rewarded our faith through the bad years, the same way the 91 and 92 Cups justified your fandom in the dark ages before Mario…
what?
you just used the word “bandwagon fan” to describe someone who always has rooted for the home team?
that’s called a “loyal fan”. and yes, if you root for the lions you are no doubt a loyal detroit fan. just check your verbage next time.
Hey now, I’ve been watching all three teams since the 80s with varying start seasons.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
um...
steelers fans act similar (and i’m a pens/steelers fan fyi) in respect to pride & sense of accomplishment for what the team does.
the difference between MOST steelers fans & red wings fans are that they act like its their birthright to host the cup. just look at center ice. hockey town. seriously? i dont care if thats the city’s nickname that’s just arrogant.
or americas team… same thing

Yes, there are Lions fans
we’re alot like Pens fans were 5-6 years ago, and hope the Lions will build a great team like the Pens have quickly become. You guys have the better winning history on your side
What bugs me about this fight is Geno coming in and swinging away at Z with the stick still in his hand. That’s dangerous, and I’ve lost some respect for Malkin seeing that…
yeah the stick thing was bad. but in genos defense i think he was new to the whole mogloid fleshripping gorilla act there. least he wasnt swinging like alex semin of the caps

While this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I said that the Penguins needed to find a way to go about physically intimidating the Red Wings, I suppose you have to start somewhere. I’ll give Malkin an ‘A’ for effort for at least trying to do what the rest of the Penguins seem either unwilling or unable to do.
And props to the audio guy at the Joe for playing ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ by U2 after the fight. That was actually pretty hilarious.
yes its was

not that NBC would be useful, but
Was there a whistle on that play before Talbot jabbed at the puck? Couldn’t hear anything on broadcast and there was no discussion about posession. After Osgood’s flop the puck dribbled into the net. It would have been only marginally cheaper than Wings’ 2nd goal.
Geno just lit a little fire under himself like he did after that brush up early in the Caps series. If Zetterberg didn’t want to go he should have let go of the Geno’s jersey and skated away instead of skating away while holding the jersey.
This series will get chippy very soon — the refs are calling few penalties on either side, and you can see both teams taking more and more liberties. They’ll settle it themselves if the refs won’t.
you know, I’ve been staring at the Hossa/Dupuis interaction, and I still don’t see a penalty there. I’m inclined to agree with Bob Grove that the stick just snapped, because I don’t see a real slashing motion on Hossa’s part, and especially nothing that should break a stick. Dupuis compounded the problem by skating away from a play that was still in his zone, leaving Hossa utterly alone to start the sequence leading to the goal. And then Malkin helped the Red Wings by taking Holstrom down (you know the kind of thing that would be a penalty if the refs hadn’t left their whistles back home in Canada?) directly into Fleury, rendering him helpless to stop Filppula’s flip. That’s all looking at it with red and white glasses, obviously, but I’m pretty sure if the roles were reversed, I’d still say “what slash?” and be pissed at my own player for taking out my goalie….
I still haven’t found a replay that shows the alleged offside, so if you know of one, let me at it.
im still looking for it also. the higlites only pick up right after that. if you would read my thoughts on game 1 and 2 thread you would see that i agree with you on dupuis but also i contend that if dupuis plays that like the rest of the league its a penalty. (shake the stick till the blade goes flying)

just a remote ounce of consistency would be nice
They’ve been calling this slashing all season and throughout the playoffs — all of a sudden it’s open to interpretation. Dupuis didn’t skate off as much as he was incredulous at the no call. I’m sure he wasn’t alone on either side.
