Big players make big plays in big games
If there is one thing I absolutely hate about 3 day breaks it’s trying to find any little tid bit of information to tide me over to the next game. So I think its time as we near the unfortunate and inevitable end of the season that we look back at the biggest plays of the playoffs for Pittsburgh. Given the propensity for certain players to be in the action in big moments, I think it is safe to say someone on this post will be a key player in game 7.
Click read more to see video highlights of some of the biggest plays in Pittsburgh's run for the Cup.
- Game 3, Eastern Conference Quarter finals:
- Simply known as the kick, Marc-Andre Fleury makes arguably one of his best saves of the playoffs ever. With a wide open net, beckoning and having already made to superb stops on a two on one, the puck magically finds its way to jeff carters stick. Flower’s toe save could very well surpass Petereangilo’s glove save against the devils in penguins hockey lore.

- Game 3, Eastern Conference Semi-finals:
- With 8:37 left in the first overtime and a face-off upcoming to the left of rookie phenom simeon varlamov, Sidney Crosby shows why he is a more complete player with a big faceoff win back to gonchar, who in turn shuffles the puck to the high slot for a waiting Letang. A fortunate bounce off of defenseman shane Morrison and the pens half the playoff series, cutting the deficit to 2-1. they would win 4 of 5 to take the series in 7. More on that later.
- Game 7, Eastern Conference Semi-finals
- Marc-Andre Fleury again saves the day. In a deciding game 7, with the leagues leading goal scorer on a breakaway Fleury stones Alex ovechkin. Also of note Unsung hero rob scuderi dives and with the stick in his right hand applies pressure to Ovechkin preventing him from getting any solid wood behind the shot..
- Game 2, Eastern Conference finals
- Geno malkin shows why he is in consideration for the hart trophy as well as the conn smythe. The pens ride the strength of evgeni malkins hat trick and temper. This game served as a notice that making geno angry is very very bad. Just prior to his second goal, one Scott walker got off a clean but ill intentioned hip check on geno. Shortly there after Chad LaRose instigated a tustle with geno. Worst mistake of his career there.
- Game 6, Stanley cup finals
- After a horrendous 5 goal shellacking, Fluery once again this playoff run shows his mettle by stopping all but one shot, and with the help of Rob Scuderi , stands tall in the waning seconds to prevent overtime.
And now a poll, who steps up so the Pens skate off with the Cup.

Either Malkin or Crosby has to step up, the third line has been a beast and they just need to keep doing what they are doing. But we really need one of our signature stars to step up and get away from Zetterberg and Lidstrom, they need to make something happen. All this talk about 80 whatever % of teams who are at home win, only two road teams ever won game 7, wings are 12-1 on home this playoffs…who cares, it means nothing, this is just like Mike Lange said, we’ll see you in the school yard for all the marbles. It’s a one game series don’t shit the bed on this game guys.

Question...
….not to nitt pick on an overall good post with good points…
Wasn’t the Flower’s big save on Carter in game 2 not game 3? I am referring to the toe save you mention above?

I put a vote in for the entire 3rd line.
They chipped in both the goals and also did some work against the Zetterberg line, as Mirtle pointed out yesterday.

I totally botched the poll, I was thinking it was asking who the Game 6 hero was.

great points
if anyone would have told me that crosby would have one goal in this series for the first 6 games i woulda thought immediately we had to have lost the series by then. our team is really playing great and i think he needs to get a goal or two to help steal this game in Detroit.
but we can’t win this game if fleury doesn’t play awesome regardless how good anyone else plays. he gets my vote.

voted for the 3rd line too….Yeah, I would LOVE to see Sid and Geno go goal crazy, but I honestly don’t know if they will.
Petereangilo….now that’s a name from the past that you don’t hear often!!

For what we all want to happen, you gotta hope our Game 7 hero is none other than Flower. Luck hadn’t been his friend in Game’s 1 and 2, and then, Game 5, was just painful for some of the goals he let by.
I expect his strong Game 6 to build a whole lot of confidence for him, and, hopefully, this series has dragged out long enough it keeps the ‘veteran’ legs of the Red Wings a step behind our forecheck, and we cash in quick.

I know he’s included in the “entire third line”, but I would strongly petition for having Jordan Staal the individual added to the poll. This is the guy who netted a hat trick in the Joe to spark a 7-6 OT victory, and has scored arguably the Pens’ two biggest goals in this series.
In light of his omission, I voted for Tenk.

I posted this in the Game 7 sats post but it fits better here.
I have 1 prediction
If Jordan Staal gets 1 goal or even an opportune assist in this game and the Pens win…we will have the youngest conn smythe winner since roy.

I doubt that highly. The Conn Smythe goes to the playoff MVP. With a good game tomorrow Staal may well be the best Penguin in the finals but he only scored two goals in the first three rounds.
Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury have all had better and more even efforts throughout the playoffs than Staal.
I take nothing away from what Jordan’s done, but he’s not a Smythe contender this year.

good point
i was just thinking about his play in the previous rounds and was rethinking this post.

Dagnabit
I see that post subject, and immediately, my mind flashed back about 10-15 years, to now Redskins WR Santana Moss in college at Miami, right after he scored a TD, just yelling at the camera “Big time players makes big time plays in big time games”, except he was so jacked up on the moment, you could only understand about every third word. It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen….
Unfortunately, I can’t find a clip of that on youtube or elsewhere…

I can’t shake the feeling that Dupuis has a role to play in this before all is said and done.

I was going to find a picture of smeagol and put it next to a picture of Pascal Dupuis. The Pascal Dupuis google image search found me this one though, and it’s too hilarious not to post here.

I was thinking the unlikely as well… Dupuis… who gets the heart and hope trophy in my mind… i’m such a girl sometimes… lol. I guess that I decided he is the one player i’ve been the toughest on all season, so he will come up big, as though he knows what i’m thinking : )

Call me a bandwagoner, but I think it’s going to be Malkin. PPG and an assist to Fedotenko would be a nice way to end the series :)

sid, maf, geno, checkers in that order with 2hrs and 12 minutes to game time. these guys know they can win in the joe. bounces dictated the wins in games 1 and 2. game three we quit after 10 minutes. the guys skate and hit tonight like they did in game 6 they win. i dont think any of us are xpecting a reapeat of game 7 vs the caps, but it sure would be nice to put it away early.
is it game time yet?
