PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ARE YOUR 2008-09 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS

sidney with cup

sidney with cup

Not much analysis tonight, time to celebrate.

An unreal ending to a most unlikely of season turn arounds.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have won their third Stanley Cup in franchise history.  Sidney Crosby is the youngest captain to lead his team to the Stanley Cup.  Evgeni Malkin is the playoff MVP.  Marc-Andre Fleury has redeemed himself from his previous playoff and tournament woes.

Life is good.  Enjoy it everyone and thanks for sticking with Pensburgh all season long.

Ditto

I was in philly this week, cheering (and getting boo’d) in a bar cheering for the Pens…

Thanks for winning 2 in a row to make me look good.

Oh and making the Wings look like losers, because that’s always nice.

Sid’s Cup celebration was amazing…how often do you see that? He picked it up and screamed, “WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”

Staal did the same thing. Geno yelled, “YEAH!!!”

I love these kids.

I can’t change mine. It’s me wearing my lucky Malkin baby blue at my first Pens game. I was one Geurin short of seeing the full team that’d take home the Cup too, Kunitz first game.

Gonna be hard to tell which posts are yours now, FYI ;-)

I wouldn’t call it a ton of money. He’s not going to get $5M+ a year. He will get a hefty raise, but not Noris Trophy like money. I’m guessing $2-3M a year, with a discount to stay with the pens. Your thoughts?

Scuds was drafted by the Pens, so he’s been here his entire career. Look at Orpik. Even though he could have walked away for more money elsewhere, he still stayed with the organization in spite of Therrien sitting behind the bench. They didn’t have the most comfy of relationships. As long as the Pens give him a reasonable offer, he’s staying.

yeah, I agree

I think if it’s a reasonable offer (and don’t you think they’ll give him one and perhaps let Gill walk?), he’ll stay.

I was so impressed with Malkin and Staal playing tired to fill the hole that Croz left with his ‘midsection injury’(knee, lulz, love ya Sid).

The team stepped up bigtime without their Captain and eeked out the road win for the Cup.

Adams

Seriously is Shero a genius, I was among the throng of WTF when we got Adams, he seemed like an emergency depth player, like only if we had nobody else, and he turned out to be so valuable, he was killer on the PK, and polayed awesome tonight.

Polayed, gotta love the vodka.

I’d take more games like this series, this was great hockey, this is what the league needs more of.

and by that I mean Penguin Stanley Cups.

But seriously, lets do it again, we need a tie break.

You might want to get rid of Conklin and Hossa though, apparently they lose cups.

Congrats!!

Dear PITTSBURGH Fanz, I have been a wings fan since 1964. ( watched Howe)
I grew up in Detroit. The pens really do have 2 great players 4 sure.
But I did not think they could play together as an entire team.
WoW I was wrong. They had to play as a team to beat the skilled Wings and
they did. So congrats u now have 2 champions.(steelers)
Enjoy this. Your great city deserves it.

I honestly didn’t think we could do it. In my opinion the old dogs just have too many tricks up their sleeves. But I think the Pens learned from the wings this series, they were a totally different team these last two games.

You’ve got a great core with some years left, and some really good youngsters. If you can find a few more depth players next year and the Pens can keep it together in FA, next year we could do this again.

His market value tanked. Boy, NBC really milked that at the end, showing Hossa’s failure quite a bit. You know, Hossa is still a world-class player, but no goals in 7 games against your former team in the Finals? No. No, Hossa. You don’t deserve the Cup. Not for $7 million a year. I tried to force some tears when Croz and Sarge skated the Cup but they didn’t surface(cause Malsby is a manly-man, of course). What did surface was a huge smile – a satisfied, happy smile – from a life-long Pens fan who wondered if he’d ever see the Cup-happiness again. I did; and I’m at a loss for words as to my happiness.

We did it, Pensburgh. We f**king did it. You can say ‘Crosby sucks’ or that MAF isn’t championship-material until your pillow-cases saturate with tears. We won the Stanley Cup. WE. WON. Yes, we as fans of this team won big tonight. Enjoy it. Hug your loved ones and soak this in, because who knows when we might feel this righteous again?

I don’t know if it means more because i doubt anything can ever top a player’s first Stanley Cup championship. But I think it’s some sort of – I don’t want to say closure – so maybe it’s just that feeling of anything is possible even after hockey.

The New Jersey Devils came back from a 3-1 series deficit to defeat the Flyers in the ‘99-’00 Eastern Conference Final. Less than halfway through the first period of Game 7 in Philadelphia, Eric Lindros attempted to rally the Flyers, who already trailed the Devils by a goal, by gathering the puck in the neutral zone and skating it across the Devils blue line in what looked like an attempt to set up a scoring chance but ended with Lindros lying prone on the ice after Scott Stevens swept in from left to right and nailed him with an open-ice bodycheck, which crushed any of will to win that may still have remained in the Flyers. The Devils would win the game and the series, advancing to the Cup Final which they would go on to win, so that was a pretty epic Game 7 road win. But this Penguins victory is just as, if not more, epic than that game.

I agree. That’s why I give this one the nod too. That and the stunned look on Marian Hossa’s face when NBC switched the video feed from the Penguins celebrating to the dejected Detroit bench. I believe that is what my literature textbook refers to as ‘situational irony,’ or, as I like to think of it, poetic justice.

I would like to thank Marion Hossa for choking during the playoffs. I would like to thank you for saying the Red Wings give you the best chance to win the cup, and I would like to especially thank you for showing what it truly feels like to have the world in your hands and completely lose it all at one time. Without you Mr. Hossa we wouldn’t have Marc Andre Fluery, Brooks Orpik, or maybe even the superstar Max Talbot. So thank you for being a tool.
Of course thank you to the Pittsburgh Penguins for an awesome season, and an even better post season. the big run came late this year, but it was worth. Looking forward to next season when Disco Dan Bylsma has a whole season to work with this team.

I would argue that Kunitz and Guerin weren’t amazing this Finals, but benefited from playing with the Kid. With K-gun, we’ll see, since we have him signed until 2011(I think), but with Billy G…honestly, considering the respectable amount of tears he shed tonight, I think his hockey playing days are done.

And as a side note, I never thought much of Bill Guerin before this year. I have a unexpressable amount of respect and love for that guy after this spring. Best move of the year, and thank you, Bill for your leadership and effort this spring. I will always remember your play this Playoffs. Congrats on your 2nd Cup!

well

They played well, even if neither was in the Conn Smythe running. We would not have won without either. Can we count the number of clutch, money goals Billy scored this postseason? A lot for a 39-year-old. And Kunitz played well even when he wasn’t scoring.

I’m gonna say it again, folks, Hossa IS a world-class player. He really is. I cheered him on a lot last spring and he made a choice this summer. Did it prove it to be wrong? Yes. Meh. We won, let’s get over Hossa and enjoy what’s ours.

I don’t give a crap about Hossa. I said a few months into the season that his not signing would be good for the Pens’ ability to piece together a deep roster. And yeah, I feel a llttle vindicated. So Hossa can suck it. He didn’t want to play with us, and he can live with that choice.

P is for Latrobe.

by holiday park on Jun 13, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I’d counter that with a flipside of Malkin this year to last. Sometimes, players just get defended very very well. Certainly was the case for Sidney Crosby, and, from watching tonight’s game, it’s not like Hossa ever truly had a clear cut quality chance to do anything. He may have had a chance for a rebound early in the 2nd, but rebounding is a hit or miss kind of profession.

I think he’ll get a load of stick for his choice last offseason, but, for me, I just see it as the beauty of irony striking it’s humongous and humorous hand once more.

I dont know about that

Hossa is certainly better than Fedotenko/Guerin/Satan combo we ran out on the wings this year, and lets not forget we won the Cup by one goal and by one game, so its not as if it was a blow out; Hossa just played really poorly.

We got huge contributions from role players, which you can always rely on, but Im certainly glad they did, but I think if we ran out Crosby/Malkin/Hossa/Staal we wouldve had a chance at getting back. The performances of Malkin/Fleury from last year to this year was the real difference

Food for thought:

Before the Penguins tonight, the last team to win a Game 7 on the road was the 1979 Pirates. Before that, the 1971 Pirates. And the Steelers were the first Super Bowl team to win all playoff games on the road in 2005.

Pittsburgh sports…doing it the hard way, but damn does it feel good!

This Pens team showed me a lot. Is this the start of a dynasty? Will we become ‘the evil skating Penguin’? I don’t know. This was a pretty special team though, and I’ll never forget it.

Great Night!

I think I was more excited tonight than I was when the Steelers won the Super Bowl in February. I mean, I had seen them do that before. The last time the Pens won a Stanley Cup, I was 12 and didn’t watch hockey, might as well had happened 1979…

So tonight, even though I’m not from Pittsburgh, I’m happy and proud to be a Pittsburgh sports fan, it’s really the best city I’ve ever been to and has the greatest football and hockey fans I’ve ever met.

totally

I said at the beginning of the postseason that I wanted the Pens to have to go through Detroit: if they were going to be the best, I wanted them to have to beat the best. And they just did.

Just a great game by every Pen that needed to play a great game. I still can’t believe I just watched a Pens team play a game like that in such a big moment. I really can’t.

I actually wanted nothing to do with Detroit, they are so good, they execute and defend so efficiently it’s incredibly frustrating. But the Pens got them, blocking shots and forcing turnovers as well as Detroit sits in passing lanes and traps puckhandlers.

This team is way better than they were at the beginning of the playoffs, in fact they are way better than when the Cup series started. this time they learned the Wings game and managed to take their game to the same level. It was phenomenal to watch.

Whats left is to see if Detroit is willing to pass the mantle, or if they will take it back. And what teams like Washington and Chicago will do to get to the next level.

Not to mention the Philadelphias of the world and their 87 straight minor league titles. They aren’t going away any time soon.

completely

Last season’s run was a taste of things to come, but that team wasn’t ready to play a good team on a big stage. They learned from playing Detroit last year; and this year they had to play a nasty series against Philly, and a gutty series against Washington. I will always believe it helped them to know how to step up in games 6 and 7 of this series.

You need all types to win a Cup. Staal might not be an elite scorer but you need those big, nasty forecheckers who can kill penalties too. I for one am so happy we didn’t sign Hossa and sacrifice Staal to the salary cap.

I think the Pens team were the best ‘role-playing’ team I’ve seen in a long-time, in any sport. They all had their roles and they stuck to them so clearly. Staal’s job was to be the defensive-minded center, the grinder…and he did his job admirably. Hossa’s snubbing was the best thing that could have happened to this franchise. Hopefully we’ll have a little money this offseason to try and re-sign the Piece…if not, maybe Tank.

Still, we won THIS year. What happens next year is in the ‘whatever’ bank right now.

1.Jordan Staal…His short-handed goal in game 4 turned the red tide into a sea of black and goal
2.Rob Scuderi-not once, not twice, but three times he stonewalled the Wings in game 6 when MAF was out of position, thus keeping the game from going into OT
3.Maxine Talbot-The Stanley Cup game-winner…what else can I say

Sweeeeeet!!!

As a native yinzer (from Western PA), I currently reside in the Detroit area. Most people in Detroit thought it was forgone conclusion that the Red Wings would win this series. I said from the beginning that it was going to be a close series between the two best teams in the NHL; even after game five. Red Wing fans were handing out condolences to me after that game and I adamantly insisted that the result of the series was still up in the air. Of course, RW fans scoffed and offered any number of reasons why I was full of it. Well, I guess I was right after all. RW had 3 things working against them, age, injuries, and a hungrier opponent. Fleury’s last minute saves in game 6 & 7 were awesome. The third Stanley Cup since 1967 (the RW only have 4 in the same time). Seeing Hossa lose PRICELESS. The good news for Penguins is that the team is not salary cap strapped and perhaps the acquistion of Jordan Leopold and another cup-run is quite possible.

by AquinasMan on Jun 13, 2009 12:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What a great win. Business Finished! Until next year. Really proud of the effort from the entire team, the entire Playoff run. Everytime they needed to sum up a clutch performance, the Penguins pulled it off.
Game 6 down 3-0 at Philly…G3 OT win vs. the Caps, G7 win at Washington, G3 vs. Detroit weathering a tough 2nd period and getting back in the series. G4 stopping back to back Wing PPs, scoring a shorty and tying the series at 2. G6 and G7 Win or you’re done, bouncing back from the embarrassment that was Game 5 and slaying the mighty Redwings. After the disappointment of losing last season to a Wings team that was clearly superior it was great to see the Pens battle and match Detroit hit for hit, shot for shot and have Fleury and role players like Talbot, Staal and Kennedy be the difference makers. A Championship well earned and greatly savored!

Sweet Revenge!

Well after battling redwing Trollz on the Yahoo site for the past 2 years, especially when the dirtballs would break into Eastern Conference Playoff boards to proclaim that anything going on outside of Detroit was pointless, it is with much satisfaction to see the Penguins earn the title and skate the Cup at Joe Louis arena. Pretty much a house of horrors for Mark Andre Fleury, but not when it really mattered! Add this to the fact that unlike last year when the Pens had all kinds of contract issues to deal with, that’s not the case this year. The World didn’t end when Maid Marian bolted on the first day of Free Agency, and guess what, his leaving made the Pens a better team. I actually wish Hossa was more of a Terrell Owens type of guy, would have really made rubbing his nose in it sweet, but oh well, still satisfying, never like seeing Mercenaries bolt for the perceived best team, especially when they leave from a promising, skilled team already. Oh well, tough luck Maid Marian. The PENGUINS were obviously the better team and the better choice. Woo Hoo!

Congratulations

For what it’s worth this Leaf fan was cheering for you guys hard to take out Detroit. And you did it in the most dramatic, heart-stopping but ultimately most satisfying way of all. You slew the evil red dragon in his lair, and got vital contributions from everyone, not just Sid and Geno. As someone who hates the Wings as much as the Habs and Sens (and anyone who knows hockey rivalries knows that Leaf fans hate those teams a LOT), I was so happy to see the Penguins pull it out. Party hard boys and girls, you deserve it!

Being a Leaf fan here requires one to be sufficiently lubricated!

Can’t wait to follow next season with everyone here! I don’t know how this season’s roller-coaster ride will be topped, but if I’ve learned anything, it’s that I can count on the Pens to defy the odds and deliver the excitement.
