Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

congrats, y'all

I'm wasted, devastated, and all sorts of out of sorts, so, there may be things in here that I regret in the morning, but so be it....but your team got the job done and they are the kings of the hockey world this night, and for that, congratulations. Enjoy it...and enjoy the oversized targets that just got drawn on the back of those black and champagne (seriously, what color is that tan-ish stuff, anyway, officially?)

Star-divide

So now begins the season of your content, my discontent, as the Red Wings try to figure out what the hell went wrong, and where they could have scraped up just one stinking goal in either of the last two games to give them an overtime shot. As most of you seem to recognize in the game thread and in the overflow, this was a series that really was fought right down to the wire, could have gone either way, yadda yadda, fricking icing on the first goal, blah blah blah, but it didn't. It ended with the Pens returning the favor that the Red Wings gave your home crowd last year, skating the Cup on our ice, and if your reports are to be trusted, the Red Wings faithful returned the same favor your fans gave the Wings last year. As, frankly, should be expected, it's a full on rivalry now, and if only the NHL allowed for more than a couple of games a year to keep that rolling.

Your content, though, won't be entirely painless, as you get to decide which of the complementary pieces to keep, which ones to overpay to retain, etc., how to deal with Hossa when he tries to sign for "the best shot at the cup" (I still say you paid the dude off, maybe Mario made him an offer he couldn't refuse?).

The Red Wings will be back, for another couple of years, at least, before age and the salary cap catch up to the big red machine. The Pens, you'd think, aren't going anywhere in the short term. Maybe we'll do this again next year. Maybe we'll both be knocked out by some upstart in the first round, and learn how San Jose Sharks fans feel. Who knows?

But, for now, put all that shit aside, put all your misplaced hatred of the city of Detroit and its people aside, forget what you think about the Red Wings as a team, and revel in this fact:

You wanted the best, you got the best....and now you are the best.

laugh it up, fuzzballs....

ok, so I totally held back…some stuff to get off the chest eventually, but since I’m not going anywhere, there’s plenty of time….

I’ll say this, though, being forced to go to softball at least spared me all the final heartbreak, from the post, to the last second MAF save, to the sight of the Pens skating the Cup…at least we won our softball game, but they haven’t invented the fraction of time necessary to describe how fast I’d trade a dozen winless beer league seasons in a row for not having an insensitive 19 year old punk break the bad news to me in the manner he did, let alone what I’d have done for the Wings actually ending up on the winning side again.

A lot of you would scoff at the idea of a city and its people “needing” hockey (a decidedly non-minority sport) glory to alleviate misery, for however short a time. I don’t know about that….but on a personal level, I needed the Wings to win tonight, as a cure for a whole host of ills, so I can imagine that that actually does hold true to some degree for a city and a region as a whole, even if it is for a week or two.

It’s hell to get so involved in a sport, in a team, that realistically, you have absolutely no impact on (no matter how many Little Caesar’s pizzas we buy or Geno jerseys you purchase); I’m fortunate as a Wings fans to not have tasted these bitter tears in 14 years, the ones you guys remember oh so well from last year….but man, are they ever painful….

Nothing to hang your head about

Nothing went wrong, the hockey gods just didnt shine on us. the clank off the post with under 2 minutes left sealed the deal. Key injuries and a rushed series worked against us. we had our chances they just didnt go our way. Hard to believe HOSSA was a no show in the finals, it probably was a snowchicken conspiracy.but whatcha goin to do? Detroit has held the cup over 30% of the time the last 12 years,so you younger fans might be a little spoiled. be happy with our depth that we stand a better chance than most clubs to make it back sooner. Pens enjoy your party with the cup,but beware the hangover this fall is a doozy

some thoughts

first ah im going to give you mad props for giving me another idea on a thread about sport in general, now and when i post it. you guys played on hell of a series and have agruably the best franchise tradition and history in the league or in pro sports period. hold your head high my brother from another mother, your team and fan base performed admirably

I had a premonition last night that the Pens would win. But I didn’t even need that to know that they would win. Reviewing this past season’s events for the Pens, I saw a pattern. They are the quintessential underdogs. What a success story. They DESERVED to win the cup! It was as if it was fated that they would come out on top tonight.

I highly doubt it ends here. Look for the Pens to lead the NHL next season.

Many congrats Pens, and Pens fans!!!!
