Hossa

Marian Hossa in tears.

I think we'll get to a point where we realize none of this really matters at all.

...but not yet.

He looks dead inside

In retrospect him leaving was great for Pittsburgh, partly because we were able to sign other players (as many have mentioned) but also because he sucked in the SCF. So it’s not like we are mad at him for taking his talent elsewhere. It’s actually scary to think we could have been stuck with him for all those years (paying him $49 million).

But this moment feels good because he insulted the whole team when he left by saying Detroit had a better chance to win the cup. He flat out told everyone that he didn’t believe in our team, didn’t think we could do it… and instead of working hard with his team, he wanted to sign on with the team that already won.

Now that we have won the cup, I will no longer care what happens to Hossa… he got what he deserved, and I hope he learned a very important lesson. If you want the Stanley Cup you have to work for it — and you should never insult your former teammates on your way out of town.

And thus the heart and soul of a man is crushed. He will never be the same player again.

To paraphrase Cartman

Let me taste your tears, Marian Hossa! Mmmm, your tears are so yummy and sweet! Oh, the tears of unfathomable sadness! Yummy!

It all worked out really really well. All players want to win the Cup and he is no different – he just made the mistake of “thinking in high volume”. LOL it is like someone say8ng I don’t want to go out with you anymore because so and so is hotter – no one wants to hear THAT

I feel bad for him. Pitt really had to buck history’s trend to do what they did— no cup loser has done jack in the playoffs the next year until us, this year, since the mid-80s. And both Detroit and Pittsburgh proved in the 90s that repeat victories are more likely. So yeah, in retrospect he chose poorly, but I think the pain of losing twice in a row the way he did is punishment enough.

Im deciding how much pity to feel for him

By most accounts, hes a good guy/teammate and he made what he thought was the right decision for him, and it almost was were it not for one game. So its not as if the Wings lost in the second round.

I just couldnt believe anyone would turn down 35M, seven years w/ Crosby which would assuredly turn him into a Hall of Famer, that was the most shocking part to me.

The real question is where does he sign now?

It would be really awful for him if Edmonton became really good over the next few years and won a Cup themselves.

As to where he goes from here, he’s still a gifted player and will have no trouble finding a new NHL jersey to wear next season. Will he make as much as he was offered last year? No, but probably still a high salary(~$6 mil/yr), and maybe for less time, like 3 or 4 seasons.

I’m not sure where he’d agree to play, but some teams that have cap space and might be a decent fit for him: Islanders(playing with Tavares), the Leafs?, Devils, Sabres, Wild…idk

If Ray Emery can find an NHL team, I know Hossa won’t have a problem But like Emery, Hossa now has more baggage than a child star from the 80’s.

I'd like to see Hossa with the Wild

The Wild are my #2 team, because I live out in Saint Paul now. The Wild recently fired Lemaire, and supposedly are looking to install a more offensive system that Hossa might flourish in. If Hossa and Gaborik sign with the Wild (huge if), they should have lots of offense next season.

Anyway, I’d rather see him there. As long as he doesn’t sign with a division rival, I’ll be happy, because you have to admit that the man has mad hockey skills, and I’d like the Pens to play him as little as possible.

go pens!

With some team where there’s no chance of making the playoffs.

Well maybe they would have a chance up until the day he signs with them…

i think he cost himself a lot of money

Let’s not forget that, prior to last year’s playoffs, Hossa had a reputation as a playoff choker, and given his disappearing act in this year’s playoffs, that label might be right back on him. It’s reasonable to argue that his success last year had a lot to do with playing on Crosby’s wing. I imagine there will be plenty of teams interested in him, but not at the contract terms either Pittsburgh or Edmonton were offering.

Oh well, at least we’ll know, by his decision, which team is going to lose next year’s Finals!

P is for Latrobe.

wow excellent point

I had completely forgotten about that, he was a choker. Its like when Kariya spurned us to go to, I cant even remember, but I mean you have a chance to put up good numbers with Sid’s pass first mentality which could vault you into the Hall of Fame and you turn it down, and 35M to boot in Hossa case.

I would imagine he’ll resign with Detroit; he had another great regular season afterall

The question is whether they can afford him and whether he’ll take what they offer.

Rumor has it that the government has freed up some TARP funds for the Coyotes. Downside? The government has required the Coyotes to sign Hossa for 9 years, $81M.

Now why would Phoenix do that? They want to start winning. Bringing Hossa on board does not register wins where they matter.

if you watch a video of the 08 finals and the 09 finals, i thinks its holmstrom or franzen that are in the EXACT same spot as geno was when we lost

I remember that pic of Hossa in the 08 playoffs so vividly. I thought at the time…man, this guy was so great for us, what a pickup, he’ll come back next year and we’ll do this right. Sorry, Hoss…you were replaced by a 38-year-old American winger with half your talent and ten times your heart. Thanks for declining our offer.

A few months back, I told one of my friends that I hoped Hossa would spend the rest of his career signing one-year deals with the team that won the Cup the previous year…so that he’d always be chasing the Cup, and always be just one season off.

Obviously, I no longer hope the same thing.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Thanks, Marian!

I like Guerin, Kunitz, and Adams so much better anyway. Obviously I’m not the only one. I initially thought it would have been perfect to have the Penguins who played last year skate rings around him, or extend middle fingers towards him, but Crosby’s megawatt smile probably hurt him more than anything else.

Other Similar Situations...

Can anyone think of other instances when this has happened in sports? I can only think of some situations where guys, later in their career (though not necessarily washed up), have signed for less money in order to ride other stars (in their prime) to a championship. These are some guys of I thought of:

Ray Bourque – 2000 Avalanche (classic example)
Karl Malone & Gary Payton – 2004 Lakers
Barkley – 1996 Rockets

That really isn’t the case here because Hossa is still a top notch player. But in both types of situations, it seems to be somewhat of a farse. I mean, if you are a guy that’s a role player, and always will be, then maybe it makes sense to sign with a better team in order to get a championship. But if you are an elite player and try to win it as a lead dog but fail. And then determine that are you going to try and stack the deck by going to a a team that just won a championship (and take less $$ to do so). It seems like you are messing with karma.
