The Stanley Cup makes its first appearance at PNC Park

This one's short and sweet but definitely worth mentioning.  The Stanley Cup will make an appearance today at PNC Park before the Pittsburgh Pirates/Detroit Tigers game. According to The Post-Gazette eight to 10 members will be on hand, although the exact names of the players are unknown.

One thing's for certain though - Papa Bill Guerin is throwing out the first pitch around 1:24ish.

This is probably the part where you crack some sort of joke about the Stanley Cup being the only championship PNC Park will see for quite some time, but there's no sense in being jerks to Pitt's baseball team.

Unless of course that explaining of the joke made me one anyway...

Keep those eyes open for parade info.

What's the story on Crosby and the handshakes?

I’m in Buffalo and a Sabres fan, but I rooted for Pittsburgh in the Cup finals and am a big admirer of Sidney Crosby. I’m always sticking up for him against a few (jealous) friends who don’t like him. I just can’t believe he wouldn’t shake hands with the Red Wing players afterward. That doesn’t seem like him – what’s the story with that?

I was looking for some info here on Pensburgh about this but haven’t seen it. I know Sid shook hands with Coach Babcock, but I think that was all.

sid would not do it on purpose. if ya look at the video from nbc he was clearly still celebrating. the red wings were in such a hurry to get off the ice. It was less then 2 minutes that the red wings started the hand shake line. And ya notice the red wings didnt even salute their fans like the pens did last year. In my opinion it was just blown out of proportion, i mean c’mon the pens won the cup, wouldnt you want to just keep celebrating with your team!!!

the skinny

the wings were rushing to get off the ice to allow the ceremonies to proceed. the pens being the young guys theye are were going bonkers in the corner when the wings formed up the line. handshakes started and sid was still at the net celebrating with team officials and doing interviews. lidstrom and draper got done the last of the guys and had not yet seen sid. well draper being draper he got angry and went off to the locker room as did a majority of the wings after the handshakes concluded. sid joined the line about 3/4 of the way through, met first with franzen. not a big deal other then what the haters are making of it.

I haven’t seen whether Draper waited around or not, but Lidstrom by accounts waited around….

Like I’ve opined elsewhere, the handshake line is one of this sport’s biggest traditions, you don’t talk to Pierre McGuire (or whoever it was he was being interviewed by, I didn’t see the end of the game, as you know) before you take care of the business of paying your respects/accepting accolades.

I’m not a Sid fan, but I’m far from a hater, and I think this is a major screwup on Crosby’s part. The rest of the Pens made it to the handshake line, but he wasn’t cognizant of it happening, and/or didn’t have the wherewithal to go join the line…

And in the process, however inadvertent it might have been, he effectively blew off one of the most respected players in the game today, possibly the greatest defenseman to ever play the game. Not cool…

I’m sure Crosby and Lidstrom will handle this off the ice professionally, if it hasn’t been done already. The media is blowing something out of proportion, particularly the Detroit media that is looking to take the attention away from losing.

Haven’t read any of that stuff, staying away from coverage other than what you or the guys over at Winging it provide….so I’m opining in a vacuum. But imagine it the other way, if the Wings had won, and Lidstrom had been too tied up in talking to the Pierre Mcguire or Red Wings front office to go congratulate Crosby on an outstanding series. What would you guys be yelling right now? Something about arrogance, or a-holiness?

Of course, it wouldn’t have happened, because Lidstrom knows better, he’s older, more experienced, and would have made sure to break away at the appropriate time to join the handshake line. Sid’s got the Cup to show that he’s a leader, but a certain immaturity was exposed there, I think.

And for the haters, he just gave them another bone to chew on for a couple of years, something that could easily have been avoided just by being cognizant of what was going on on the ice…

I understand the impact it has and the image it projects of Crosby. He’s pretty aware of that too. And frankly the guy has never shot down an interview so perhaps that needs to change a bit if answering every question is going to tarnish his image (or at least allow people to have to more ammunition for it). Debating over the subject as to whether or not he intentionally blew off Lidstrom is, I feel, completely irrelevant. I do think captains have to show an obvious respect for one another and that Sid’s actions may have reflected badly on him. But he addressed the situation on NHL.com:

“I had no intentions of trying to skip guys and not shake their hands,” Crosby said. "I think that was a pretty unreasonable comment. The guys I shook their hands with, they realized I made the attempt. If I could shake half their team’s hands, I’m sure the other half wasn’t too far behind. I don’t know what happened there.

I know that doesn’t alleviate the situation and, like any Sid response to a question, it is a bit bland. But I think his true intent was not to blow off Lidstrom. He even added that he was celebrating with his team, knows what it’s like to be on the other side of things and completely understands why the Wings would not sit around and wait.

I don’t for a moment think he intentionally did it, (I thought I used the word inadvertent somewhere, but maybe that was on a different thread), so we’re not in disagreement on that point….

The end result bugs me both as a hockey fan and a Red Wings fans, but I readily admit more as the latter, and the fact that it was Lidstrom that was effectively slighted.

For Sid’s part, it’s too bad, because Friday was a night where a lot of the haters should have been silenced, where he proved he was worthy of some of the hype, but then that happened, allowing an opening for ragging on the “the Kid” portion of the nickname.

It’ll all wash over soon enough, but it’s the kind of thing where the issue will pop up the next time the teams meet in the regular season, or if they meet again in the playoffs for a third go-around.
