Why I Think Flower Deserves The Conn Smythe

He was simply more useful to the team. No Geno and the Pens survive, no Flower the Pens are in trouble.

If we had some crappy goalie in the Stanley Cup then there's no chance we would of won, no Geno and there's still a chance, since we still have Sergei, and Sidney, and Jordan and eveyone else to pick up the slack.

The point is Fleury is the reason why Pens won. That's why he should have that maple leaf displayed on his mantle, rather then it being on Geno's.

I would like it very, very much if you reading this right now recommend this so that way more people can see it and give thier opinions in the matter.

Did you only watch Game 6 and 7 of the Finals?

Consistency. Geno was consistently the Pens best player. Fleury led in some bad goals in Games 1 and 2 of the SCF. And might’ve been the reason why the series was pushed to 7 games. Certainly, the Pens were playing on equal terms with the Wings and didn’t have to spend a couple of games to adjust like last year. Fleury was mediocre in the Caps series. Against the Hurricanes, John Curry could’ve played in net and the Pens still would’ve won in 4.

Fleury’s legacy as a big-game goalie was cemented in the final 5 seconds of Game 7 not before it.

Did anyone watch all of the games?

If you’re looking at consistency, then Geno isn’t exactly there yet… I mean, don’t get me wrong, he was good. But I think Sid was more consistent throughout the Playoffs as a whole. I also think winning the MVP award should be about more than your points production.

Can't agree

Sorry, Geno deserved it… more points in the playoffs than anyone in two decades. Fleury came up huge in Games six and seven, but was outplayed by much of the series by Chris Osgood (and in game five by Garon!)

No one outplayed Geno.

I disagree

I think consistently Geno was a better player than Fluery. Other than 2 games in the Caps series, I think Geno just flat out played better. I think the aware should have gone to either him or Sid.

I am not, in no way, down playing Fluery’s contribution, because, you’re right, without Fluery, we would not have won. However, Fluery did not play as consistent as Geno or Crosby.

No one has had as many points as Geno did this postseason since Gretzky, not sure what year, but it’s Gretzky, and he’s been retired for a long time. Geno was lights out this postseason. His fingerprints were all over the Game 3 finals win, all over the ECF sweep, etc. Sure, a little inconsistent to the ridiculous standard he has set for himself, but even when he’s bad he’s better than almost every skater on the ice.

Not a knock on Fleury, he was great, but saying Geno didn’t deserve the Smythe is just a little absurd.

That said, I thought Fleury deserved it last season, even in a losing effort. I have no grounds to say that Zetterberg didn’t deserve it, since I didn’t watch much of the west playoffs that season.

1993 I’m pretty sure was the last time The Great One put up numbers like that.

No way did Fluery deserve it this year. He played brilliant in the first and third rounds, and had his moments in the finals, but against washington he was only ok. Its hard to say if another goalie would have made a difference. I’m glad we have him, but no Smythe this year (he should have had it last year).

Geno didn’t deserve the Conn Smythe. Sure he played better than Sid in the final, but he was more or less quiet until Carolina. Sid had three amazing series and one dead series. Geno had one ok series, then a dead one, then an amazing series, then a good series. He wasn’t even remotely consistant. 36 points and only +3? Not to mention he is terrible in the faceoff circle and had an insane amount of penalty minutes. Should have went to Sid.

But I’m not complaining, it ended up on the right team.

Think about it

It’s the most valuable player, value can be associated with how big of a difference does he make on the team.
Value can also be applied in how the team would be without him, a team with no Fluery wouldn’t be Stanley Cup champions, I’m not sure we would get past Carolina, but with no Geno there’s atill Jordan and Sidney and Chris and Sergei and the rest of the crew to keep the offense a float, no Fleury and the the defense wolud “sink”.

Nothing against Geno by the way!

I love MAF

But technically, he had a better post-season goalie-wise last year. There isn’t any way you could give it to him now when Geno’s put up the most points since Gretzky. I’m sure he’s happy with his name on that big shiny silver thing.

in order for me to think about a goalie getting the smythe, he has to steal about 2 games a series. that make him the differance maker. flower stole two this series, two in the philly series. but not so much pressure in the caps and canes series

gotta be at least two per series and no real off games. had flower not had the 5-0 drubbing in detroit or the 6 goal performance in philly i have no issues with him getting the conn smythe. its ok hell get it next year

Flower was Clutch but the Right guy got the Conn Smythe

I think it’s fair to say NO ONE wins the Stanley Cup with half ass Goaltending. Fleury was the #1 Star in several of the Pens wins, and was for the most part solid, especially G6&7 in the Finals. He got a lot of support from back checkers and scrappy defensemen. Fleury was definitely a hero and shut his detractors up but throughout the playoffs he had several throw away games and a number of soft goals. Geno was a huge difference maker the entire Playoffs. I think the difference between this year and last in the Finals was Geno, totally gassed last season and a big force this season.

In light and in lieu of all that has been said, the fact that Fleury didn’t get Star recognition for game 7 is a travesty.

That’s not what the post-gazette said. I suppose they could have been wrong, or had their own view.

As a Wings fan, who admittedly didn’t watch the first 3 rounds of the Eastern Conference Playoffs, I absolutely expected Malkin to win the Conn Smythe. I gained a lot of respect for Malkin in the Finals as he obviously put his heart, soul, and weight into the games. He threw the body around, and I think it was his fight against Zetterberg that really made me take notice. I suspect I wouldn’t see Crosby throwing punches like that.

In last year’s finals Malkin was obviously a shell of himself and the difference between last year and this year was night and day. So much so that based on my limited viewing I thought Malkin should wear the C instead of Crosby. You are welcome to tell me why I am wrong but that’s my perspective from the best playoff series I’ve watched in years.
